Thoroughbred Owner Conference’s Virtual Series Kicks Off March 2

Registrations are still being accepted for the seventh Thoroughbred Owner Conference, which kicks off Tuesday, March 2, at 2 p.m. ET as the first of a series of 10 virtual panels that will be held on the first Tuesday of every month for the duration of the year. The 2021 conference series is hosted by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and presented by Bessemer Trust, Dean Dorton Equine, Stoll Keenon Ogden, and Stonestreet Farm.

The first panel, “The Economics of Racehorse Ownership,” is sponsored by Keeneland and will delve into accounting, tax, legal, and insurance considerations associated with racehorse ownership. It will also include information on the costs of ownership, the fundamentals of running a racing stable, and owner responsibility for aftercare.

Moderated by horse racing television analyst Caton Bredar, the panel will consist of owners George Bolton and Maggi Moss; Sarah Reeves, attorney and member, Stoll Keenon Ogden; and Jen Shah, tax director, Dean Dorton.

“With more than 650 guests already registered for the virtual Thoroughbred Owner Conference series, we are excited to kick it off with an expert group of panelists that will provide invaluable information for new and veteran owners alike,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView. “While we will be posting replays of every session, we encourage those interested in the series to register in advance to get the best experience and to be able to ask questions in real time that will be addressed at the end of each panel.”

OwnerView is a joint effort spearheaded by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association to encourage ownership of Thoroughbreds and provide accurate information on aspects of ownership such as trainers, public racing syndicates, the process of purchasing and owning a Thoroughbred, racehorse retirement, and owner licensing.

The need for a central resource to encourage Thoroughbred ownership was identified in the comprehensive economic study of the sport that was commissioned by The Jockey Club and conducted by McKinsey & Company in 2011. The OwnerView site was launched in May 2012.

Thoroughbred Owner Conference To Be Offered As Free Series Of Virtual Panels Over Nine Months

OwnerView announced today that the 2021 Thoroughbred Owner Conference will be held as a free series of virtual panels over nine months. The conference series, hosted by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and presented by Bessemer Trust, Dean Dorton, and Stoll Keenon Ogden, will be held on the first Tuesday of each month starting March 2.

“This new format for 2021 enables us to offer informative, educational and enjoyable panels on Thoroughbred ownership to anyone interested from the convenience of wherever they happen to be,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView. “Each month's conference will cover a topic that is relevant to Thoroughbred ownership and, when possible, coincides with what is happening in the Thoroughbred industry at that time of year.”

The first panel of the series, sponsored by Keeneland, will be held Tuesday, March 2, and will cover the economics of racehorse ownership. Panelists are George Bolton, owner; Maggi Moss, owner; Sarah Reeves, attorney and member, Stoll Keenon Ogden; and Jen Shah, tax director, Dean Dorton. The panel will be moderated by Mike Penna of Horse Racing Radio Network.

“The economics of owning racehorses is one of the most essential aspects of ownership for new and even veteran owners, so we picked it as our first topic of the series,” Falter said. “Other topics are finding your Thoroughbred athlete, partnerships and syndicates, claiming Thoroughbreds, and five additional ownership topics.”

Each conference panel will be streamed live, and attendees will be able to ask questions during the discussion via typed messages that will be addressed at the end of each panel. Replays of the conference series panels will also be available at a later date.

“For the best experience and the option of asking questions in real time, we recommend registering for the series and watching live,” Falter said. “We will offer replays, but it will not be the same, interactive experience.”

Thoroughbred Owner Conference Rescheduled For 2021

OwnerView announced today that the seventh Thoroughbred Owner Conference has been rescheduled for 2021. The original conference was planned to be held in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in July, but as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, the event was rescheduled to be held at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., and was then planned as a virtual conference during Breeders' Cup week.

“Because of the uncertainties of travel and in-person gatherings, we still plan to provide a virtual event for the seventh Thoroughbred Owner Conference,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView. “However, we are rethinking the format to provide engaging and educational content over a period of weeks or even months in 2021 instead of the originally planned two days.”

Details for the 2021 conference will be provided as soon as they are available.

“The impressive group of topics, speakers and panelists who were looking forward to participating during the 2020 conference will be our go-to group when we plan the next conference,” Falter said.

OwnerView’s Thoroughbred Owner Conference Postponed to 2021

OwnerView’s seventh Thoroughbred Owner Conference, already rescheduled three times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has been postponed until 2021. Originally scheduled for July in Saratoga, it was first postponed to Keeneland and finally moved to Breeders’ Cup week as a virtual conference before the new 2021 date was announced Wednesday.
