Over 500 Trainers Accepted To Thoroughbred Makeover

Some 512 trainers have been accepted to the 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America, officials with the Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) have announced. The event takes place Oct. 11-14, 2023, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington and offers prize money in excess of $100,000.

“On behalf of TCA, we congratulate all of the trainers accepted into the 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover,” said Erin Halliwell, executive director of TCA. “We appreciate the time and resources trainers dedicate to transitioning Thoroughbreds into their next careers, and we appreciate the impact that the RRP and the Thoroughbred Makeover has made on the lives of thousands of Thoroughbreds over the years.”

The Makeover, the flagship event of the RRP, is open to professionals, juniors, amateurs and teams, all of whom compete with Thoroughbreds who raced or trained to race within the past two years and who have no more than 10 months of retraining. New for 2023, the Former Broodmare Division, sponsored by Claiborne Farm, will include former broodmares who recently retired from the breeding industry as well.

Competition at the Thoroughbred Makeover is available in ten disciplines, and trainers can choose to compete in up to two: barrel racing, competitive trail, dressage, eventing, field hunter, polo, ranch work, show hunter, show jumper, and freestyle (a free-form discipline to demonstrate skills of the trainer's choice).

“The 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover marks ten years since the event's pilot, a showcase of 23 horses on the homestretch of Pimlico Racecourse in 2013,” said Kirsten Green, executive director of the RRP. “While the Makeover still serves as a showcase for the breed, it has evolved to become an integral part of the aftercare industry, driving demand for Thoroughbreds who are completing their racing careers and offering participants the community and support needed to ensure they're successful with their horses.”

The Jockey Club’s T.I.P Program Announces 2023 Schedule

More than 6,700 awards and classes at more than 1,400 shows in 43 states and six Canadian provinces will be offered for off-track Thoroughbreds in 2023, The Jockey Club's Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P) announced on Tuesday.

Awards are available for multiple disciplines, including eventing, dressage, Western and English pleasure, ranch riding, hunter/jumper, endurance, barrel racing, polo, and polocrosse.

T.I.P. Championships in hunters, jumpers, combined test, dressage, English pleasure, and English in-hand will return this year to Stable View in Aiken, South Carolina, from Oct. 5 through Oct. 8. T.I.P. Western & Central Dressage Championships will be held Oct. 11 through Oct. 14. at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington during the Retired Racehorse Project's (RRP) Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America.

“The Jockey Club is proud of the expansive number of T.I.P.-approved awards, classes, and championships that showcase the diversity Thoroughbreds have in their second careers,” Kristin Werner, senior counsel for The Jockey Club and coordinator of T.I.P., said. “Our partnership with organizations like Stable View and the Retired Racehorse Project further expand opportunities for Thoroughbreds to excel in multiple disciplines beyond the track, and we are proud to see the continued growth and success of T.I.P in 2023.”

TCA Holds Auction, Honors Moss and Second Stride

Thoroughbred Charities of America will honor Maggi Moss with the Allaire du Pont Leadership Award and Second Stride with the Ellen and Herb Moelis Industry Service Award at the 33rd Annual Stallion Season Auction and 'Tis the Season Celebration presented by Mt. Brilliant on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at Grand Reserve in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Allaire du Pont Leadership Award is presented annually to an organization or individual whose philanthropic endeavors are consistent with TCA's mission. Past award winners include Jen Roytz, LNJ Foxwoods, and Dan Rosenberg, just to name a few. From Des Moines, Iowa, Maggi Moss is a successful Thoroughbred owner, attorney, and staunch advocate for equine welfare. After over two decades in the show horse world Moss turned her attention to Thoroughbred racehorses. In 2006, she became the first woman in America since 1945 to be named leading owner in the U.S. for races won. Moss has been leading owner at multiple tracks, and she continues to work as an advocate for the importance of Thoroughbred aftercare.

The Ellen and Herb Moelis Industry Service Award is presented annually to an organization that works to uphold TCA's mission. Past award winners include the Our Mims Retirement Haven, TAKE2 Second Career Thoroughbred Program, Retired Racehorse Project, Old Friends, and New York Race Track Chaplaincy. Founded in 2005, Second Stride is a Thoroughbred aftercare organization located in Prospect, Kentucky. Second Stride works to safely and responsibly retrain and rehome Thoroughbreds.

As for the Stallion Season Auction, it opens with the online bidding of stallion seasons at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, January 4 and continues through 4:30 p.m. EST on Friday, January 6. Nearly 200 seasons will be available on www.Equiring.com with a full list available, here.

Most will sell during the online auction; however, select seasons to Constitution, Flightline, Good Magic, Maxfield (with 2024 breed back), Nashville (with 2024 breed back), Not This Time, Nyquist (with 2024 breed back), Olympiad, and Quality Road will be sold at the 'Tis the Seasons Celebration on Sunday, January 8. Bidders or their authorized agents may bid on select seasons by attending the event in-person or they may email ehalliwell@tca.org to register to bid online. Tickets can be purchased, here.

Claiborne to Sponsor Broodmare Division at 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover

Claiborne Farm will be the title sponsor of the Former Broodmare division in its first year at the 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America, the Retired Racehorse Project announced Tuesday. First announced in November of this year, the Former Broodmare division will welcome recently retired broodmares to compete alongside traditional retiring racehorses in all 10 offered disciplines, with broodmares pinned and recognized separately and competing for a separate pot of $10,000 in prize money.

“Claiborne is pleased to be the title sponsor of the Retired Racehorse Project's new Former Broodmare division,” said Claiborne president Walker Hancock. “Aftercare is such an important part of our industry and it doesn't stop with just racehorses. Every horse matters and hopefully this initiative will bring attention to those former broodmares that are sometimes forgotten once their breeding careers come to an end.”

The Former Broodmare division is also made possible by a grant from the ASPCA. Eligible broodmares will have produced a foal or have been bred in the 2021 breeding season or after, as reported by The Jockey Club, and need to have had one lifetime start or published work. They may not have had prior shows or competitions.

Training for the 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover across all divisions opened on Dec. 1. Applications are open for drafting on Dec. 15 and submission on Jan. 2 through Jan. 20.
