TCA Returns as Title Sponsor of the Retired Racehorse Project

The Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) has returned as the title sponsor of the Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, the Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) announced on Monday. The TCA has been a supporter of the RRP since 2012.

The Thoroughbred Makeover features trainers from across North America who have worked throughout the year to prepare recently retired Thoroughbred ex-racehorses to compete for more than $100,000 in ten equestrian sports. This year, the competition scope expanded to include recently retired broodmares exiting the breeding industry.

“The Thoroughbred Makeover has really moved the needle in aftercare by increasing the demand for and value of Thoroughbreds in their post-racing careers,” Erin Halliwell, executive director of TCA, said. “TCA is pleased to once again support this important event that has impacted the lives of thousands of Thoroughbreds.”

The Thoroughbred Makeover culminates in a four-day competition, set for Oct. 11-14 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY, and a symposium with educational, networking and social opportunities.

A full schedule of Thoroughbred Makeover events can be found on the Retired Racehorse Project's website.

TCA Awarded More Than $821,000 in Grants in 2023

Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) in 2023 awarded grants totaling more than $821,000, the organization announced on Tuesday.

A total of 75 organizations were approved for grants, which included 45 aftercare organizations, 20 backstretch and farm worker programs, six equine-assisted therapy organizations, three Thoroughbred incentive programs, and one research organization.

TCA's 2023 grants to aftercare organizations were bolstered by support from Hagyard Equine Medical Institute's Race to Give online fundraising campaign, which last year helped raise more than $35,000 for approved organizations.

“Thanks to our generous donors, we are thrilled to be able to award grants to 75 organizations working tirelessly on behalf of Thoroughbreds and backstretch and farm workers,” Erin Halliwell, executive director of TCA, said. “We are so proud of the impact our grantees make and we are pleased to support their work.”

Grant recipients can be found on the TCA website. Grant applications for the 2024 grant cycle will be available in mid-January.

Meet the Horses of the Thoroughbred Makeover Class of 2023

The final entry list for the 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America, is complete. You can view individual entries and explore the list using filtered search features at TheRRP.org/entries.

The Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) is uniquely positioned as the only organization in aftercare that works across all facets of the industry, including both accredited and unaccredited adoption organizations, listing agents, and for-profit trainers and resellers. The data we capture through the Thoroughbred Makeover offers a closer look at how horses are moving into second careers and may provide the most comprehensive picture of the state of Thoroughbred aftercare available. While data only comes from the 551 horses who were registered for this year's competition, it still provides valuable insight into Thoroughbred aftercare as an industry.

404 horses made final entry, but the event impacted a total of 551 that were registered and are considered part of this year's Makeover.

TCA Receives Bequest From The Cathy D. Perry Trust

Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) received a bequest from the Cathy D. Perry Trust, the organization said in a release Tuesday.

The bequest was presented to TCA board members and staff by Perry's son Brandon and daughter-in-law Diannah in the winner's circle at Saratoga Race Course in early August.

“Diannah and I have been supporters of the TCA, through the purchase of seasons at the annual Stallion Season Auction for years and are extremely proud to donate to them now and help make a scalable difference,” said Brandon Perry.

The couple, who are active in the Thoroughbred racing, named 29 charitable beneficiaries, including several Thoroughbred-industry related organizations.

“The Perry's support of TCA speaks to their commitment to Thoroughbred aftercare and to the well-being of backstretch and farm workers,” said Mike McMahon president of TCA. “They believe in leading by example and encourage others to support the charitable needs of our industry.”

TCA will use the bequest to support grantmaking to organizations approved during its 2023 grants cycle.
