2024 RRP Thoroughbred Makeover Welcomes 396 Trainers

396 trainers have been accepted to the 2024 Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America. Announced in a release from the Retired Racehorse Project, the event, a retraining competition for recently-retired racehorses and broodmares, will be held Oct. 9-12 in Lexington, KY with over $100,000 in available prize money across 10 disciplines.

“We sincerely appreciate the time and dedication it takes to transition Thoroughbreds into their next careers,” said Executive Director of TCA Erin Halliwell. “We're looking forward to October where we'll see hundreds of Thoroughbreds demonstrating their new skills in many different disciplines.”

Equine Artist Robert Clark Offers Print To Benefit Thoroughbred Charities of America

Equine artist Robert Clark will be offering limited run prints of a one-of-a-kind painting featuring American Pharoah and Justify with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA), the non-profit said in a Friday release.

The original painting sold for $18,000 at the recent TCA Stallion Season Live Auction and Celebration with all of the proceeds going to the organization. As for the prints, they are 16″ x 20″, numbered and signed by the artist.

“We are deeply appreciative of Bob's ongoing support of TCA,” said Erin Halliwell executive director of TCA. “The original artwork was highly sought after at our live auction, and we are thrilled that prints of this beautiful piece will be offered and benefit TCA. The funds raised will be granted to our approved charities working to provide Thoroughbred aftercare as well as health and human services for backstretch and farm workers.”

Cody’s Wish Added to TCA Stallion Season Auction, Proceeds to Benefit Make-A-Wish

A season with a 2025 breed back to Cody's Wish (Curlin) has been added to the Thoroughbred Charities of America's (TCA) Live Auction and Celebration scheduled to run Sunday, Jan. 7, with the majority of the proceeds going to support the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, announced the TCA Saturday. The offering was donated by Godolphin in memory of Cody Dorman, the 17-year-old Kentuckian whose story and special connection with his namesake was widely beloved in and outside the industry.

Any remaining proceeds will go to honoring his memory in other ways in conjunction with the wishes of his family. The Dorman family as well as representatives from the Make-A-Wish organization will be in attendance Sunday.

Also included in the live auction roster are seasons to Elite Power (with 2025 breed back), Taiba, Life is Good, and Forte.

Tickets may still be purchased and bidders or their authorized agents may bid on select seasons by attending the event in-person or may email the TCA to register to bid online or by phone.

Applications Open for 2024 Thoroughbred Makeover

Applications are now being accepted for the 2024 Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America, according to a Tuesday release from the Retired Racehorse Project. The application can be accessed at theRRP.org and must be completed by 5 p.m. EST Jan. 19. Accepted trainers will be announced no later than Feb. 15.

Entering its 10th year at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, the Thoroughbred Makeover features competition in 10 disciplines for recently retired Thoroughbreds in their first year of retraining for a career after racing. A competition division is also open to recently retired broodmares exiting the bloodstock industry.

Horses and their trainers may compete in one or two disciplines of their choice, including Barrel Racing, Competitive Trail, Dressage, Eventing, Field Hunter, Polo, Ranch Work, Show Hunter, Show Jumper and Freestyle (a freeform discipline showcasing skills of the trainer's choosing).

Horses and trainers will compete for more than $110,000 in total prize money, plus the title of Thoroughbred Makeover Champion, at the Kentucky Horse Park Oct. 9-12.
