TAA Onsite Activities Set During Saratoga Meet

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) will be onsite in Saratoga for a variety of events in early August, the organization said in a release Thursday. During Whitney weekend on Saturday, Aug. 5, the TAA will be on-hand all day at NYRA's Community Outreach Booth to share information on accredited aftercare. Click here for more information.

“With so many events and industry participants in town for the Saratoga meet, it is a fantastic opportunity for Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance to be on-site and connect with supporters, partners, and some of our local accredited organizations,” said Jeffrey Bloom, TAA President. “We look forward to continuing to share the mission of accredited aftercare with racing fans and we value all of our partnerships and supporters that give us the platform to do so during this premiere meet.”

Also that weekend, the TAA will be honored with two named races on Saturday, Aug. 5 and Sunday, Aug. 6. In addition, the organization will accept a $25,000 donation from James and Shari Ough.

Representatives from the TAA will be present during the Fasig-Tipton Sale on Aug.7-8 to meet with consignors, buyers, other supporters and racing fans.

Finally, TAA Board members will convene for an annual meeting on Thursday, Aug. 10.

Presque Isle Downs to Honor Veteran Campaigner Stevis Man

Presque Isle Downs will honor the career of one of the track's fan favorites, Stevis Man (Senor Amigo), with a race on July 26. The veteran campaigner recorded 20 of his 26 career wins at the Pennsylvania oval.

Stevis Man was retired to the R.A.C.E. Fund, Inc., a non-profit organization after his last race on Oct. 24, 2022. After some let-down time, he was sent to Thoroughbred Placement Resources in Upper Marlboro, Marylad to eventually begin retraining for a second career. Both R.A.C.E. Fund and Thoroughbred Placement Resources are TAA accredited.

“We are just taking our time with Stevis Man, aka Stevie, and letting him show us the way to what discipline he wants to do and right now he seems to be taking a liking to dressage,” said R.A.C.E. Fund president Marlene Murray.

Murray added, “Kim Clark at Thoroughbred Placement Resources is an excellent rider and equestrian and we are fortunate to work with her. She and Stevis Man are like poetry in motion in the ring. He is such a nice horse, kind, smart, willing to learn and remarkably sound after 74 lifetime starts. He is the whole package and deserves nothing but the best.”

The 13-year-old Stevis Man, who began his career at Mountaineer in 2013, started at 10 different tracks and was claimed three times, most recently by trainer Shelly Radosevich and JSR Stables in 2020. He hit the board in 42 of 74 starts with 26 wins and earnings of $437,208.

“We would like to thank Presque Isle Downs, and especially racing secretary Alan Plever, for honoring Stevis Man in this way and all of his fans who followed him during his long and amazing career,” said Murray.

Presque Isle Downs will have a video display on the track television screens of Stevis Man since his retirement and the chestnut gelding may compete in the Retired Racehorse Project Makeover in Lexington in October.

TAA Will Be On Site for the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) will be at Belmont Park this weekend for the GI Belmont Stakes Racing Festival and will be honored with race to highlight accredited aftercare. The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Race will be Race 10, on Thursday with a post time of 7:45 p.m. Following the running of the race, a presentation will be made to the winning connections, which includes a branded blanket and swag bag.

Additionally, the TAA will co-host the winning guests from one of the VIP experiences, donated by NYRA, auctioned off earlier this year in the “Off to the Races” campaign, promoting aftercare awareness. Winners from the VIP experience will enjoy the weekend of racing with a table for six, buffet meals, parking, and paddock access.

“NYRA is committed to supporting the work of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance in ways that advance the shared mission of protecting, re-training and re-homing Thoroughbreds when their racing days are done,” Kevin Quinn, NYRA VP of Sales and Hospitality said. “The Belmont Stakes provides an ideal stage to expand the public's understanding of the meaningful aftercare efforts underway in New York, and we are pleased to welcome the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance back to Belmont throughout the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival.”
