TVG ‘Friends Month’ Promo Raises Over $44,700 For Old Friends Retirees

As hundreds of horseplayers will try to renew their racing luck wagering through TVG for the first time, the retired racehorses at Old Friends in Georgetown, Ky., are already winners.

Marketing experts at TVG have long found success with their 'refer a friend' program, which delivers existing users a personalized sign-up link and then gives them a bonus if a friend uses their link to open a new account. This summer, FanDuel Vice President of Racing Andrew Moore believed the program could use a new twist.

“As people have been getting to see friends again, we were ideating on how to give the program an extra push for August and the outcome was Friends Month,” said Moore. “Bringing Old Friends Farm in was a natural fit, so not only would we give a referral bonus to you when the friend you referred signed up to TVG, but we would also give to Old Friends. This is a great cause and it was a fun way for racing fans not only to give to their friends, but also to raise money for their retired racing friends they have so much affection for.”

Moore and the TVG team hoped for 400 referrals in the month of August, which would have raised $20,000 for Old Friends. They were surprised when the program brought in 894 referrals for a total of $44,700 in donations.

“Credit must go to our marketing team and the talent on the TVG network who really got behind the promotion but of course the biggest thanks goes to all the fans who supported it,” said Moore.

If TVG was pleasantly surprised by the results, Old Friends founder and president Michael Blowen was ecstatic.

“It was amazing, and it was all their idea,” said Blowen. “TVG has been great to us, I have to say. Most of the broadcasters on TVG have been to the farm. When a horse is running in a race and is named after one of our horses, they'll talk about the Old Friends connection and show pictures of the farm.

“You put away the tin cup and good things happen.”

The tie-in was all the more poetic for Blowen, given his entry to racing as a horseplayer himself.

“I got into this because I love handicapping,” he said. “I love watching TVG, so it was perfect.”

Blowen said he already has plans for the windfall — the farm will use the money to construct a new paddock, which will be named after TVG and dedicated to “hard-knocking geldings” like the ones favored by TVG commentators. As always, Blowen says he has a waiting list of horses preparing to retire to Old Friends, and as always, he's as excited as a kid on Christmas Eve about every one of them — particularly Zulu Alpha, whose retirement was announced officially on Friday.

“I'm hoping when everybody's here for Keeneland, we can get some of the men and women over here for a special presentation with a sign and the check,” said Blowen. “Couldn't come at a better time, either. I've got this one spot picked out that's really nice.”

Old Friends is a Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance-accredited facility founded in 2003 and remains one of few retirement organizations equipped to house intact stallions whose breeding careers are finished. The organization now encompasses a 236-acre main campus and over 200 retirees.

The many Old Friends fans at TVG all have a favorite retiree somewhere on the property. For Moore, it's Soi Phet.

“What a fun horse!” he said.

Hagyard Partners with TCA in Race to Give

The “Race to Give,” an online giving and awareness program to support Thoroughbred aftercare was launched Wednesday by Hagyard Equine Medical Institute and Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA). RaceToGive.org is its website and central hub.

“2021 marks our 145th anniversary of caring for the equine industry,” said Dr. Luke Fallon, DVM, of Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. “These equine athletes have given us so much over the last century and a half. Our veterinarians created the Race to Give to demonstrate our appreciation.  Leading an effort to support the critical area of aftercare in conjunction with other leading horse racing organizations was the right thing to do.”

The “Race to Give,” in its simplest form, is a fundraiser but also aims to inspire individuals and organizations to create teams and to challenge each other in fun and creative ways to raise money.

“The spirit of competition is at the heart of our industry,” said Ken Ford, CEO of Hagyard Pharmacy. “Hagyard's vision was to harness that spirit to not only raise money, but to also to expand the support of equine aftercare. By developing teams and then challenging each other, we could encourage a wider group of people to participate. Aftercare organizations which have been excellent stewards of our retired equine athletes have accomplished this through the generous support of donations from a concentrated nucleus of people in the industry. Race to Give is a new platform to encourage everyone who loves horses to donate.”

Additional organizations leading the campaign include the Thoroughbred Daily News, Keeneland, TVG, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and Resolvet.

“Everyone understands how important aftercare is for our sport,” said Mike McMahon, TCA President. “It is exciting to see big names in our industry come together in year one. And I can only imagine how the list will grow in the years to come as other organizations see the impact and, frankly, how much fun it is to be part of this team of leaders.”

The money raised in the campaign this fall will be collected by the TCA, who will then distribute the funds to TCA-approved and TAA-accredited aftercare programs, where horses can be retired or retrained for a second career. A check will be presented to the TCA October 30 at Keeneland after the Fayette Stakes.

“Like many involved in the sport of Thoroughbred racing, Hagyard believes that it is our collective responsibility to protect the wellbeing of these horses we love that retire from racing and breeding,” added Dr. Fallon. “I echo everyone that is involved with “Race to Give” to please help us support these horses as they transition to their next careers.”

By launch morning, seven teams had signed up, including the Thoroughbred Daily News's Team TDN. To join our team or to make a donation, click here. Race to Give will maintain a leaderboard tracking teams' progress.

Colonial Downs, Virginia HBPA Donate $50,000 To Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance

Another successful Colonial Downs race meet was highlighted by a dedication to Thoroughbred Aftercare. After the sixth race on the Virginia Derby card Aug. 31 at Colonial Downs, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accepted a check for $50,000 from Colonial Downs and the Virginia Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association.

Initiated in 2019, Colonial Downs and the Virginia HBPA have each pledged $15 per start at the Colonial Downs meet to the TAA.

“It is with gratitude to the majestic horses that we proudly support TAA aftercare jointly with the VHBPA,” said Colonial Downs President of Racing Operations John Marshall. “Colonial Downs believes in doing our part to help retired horses that have given so much to provide entertainment, employment, and passion to so many.”

The TAA also hosted the Best Turned Out Horse Awards on Virginia Derby Day, sponsored by the Virginia HBPA, providing a cash prize and gift bag to the winning groom of the Best Turned Out Horse for each of the five stakes races on the card: the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Old Nelson Stakes, the Woodford Reserve Kitten's Joy Stakes, the Exacta Systems Rosie's Stakes, the Woodford Reserve Virginia Oaks, and the New Kent County Virginia Derby (G3T).

The winning horse and groom for the best turned out awards are as follows:

R6 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Old Nelson Stakes: BRAMBLE QUEEN and groom Luis Quintero

R7 Woodford Reserve Kitten's Joy Stakes: EPIC LUCK and groom Valentin Fonseca

R8 Exacta Systems Rosie's Stakes: TEJANO TWIST and groom Ivan Morales

R9 Woodford Reserve Virginia Oaks: ZEYARAAT and groom Oscar Cardona

R10 New Kent County Virginia Derby (G3T): DOUBLEOSEVEN and groom Francisco Oscura

“Colonial Downs is once again proud to support the TAA throughout our 2021 racing season,” said Jill Byrne vice president of racing operations Colonial Downs. “The care of horses during and after their racing careers is of the upmost importance, and the work the TAA does to ensure that this is accomplished, is extraordinary. We were delighted to have the TAA at Colonial Downs for Virginia Derby Day.”

“Like so many tracks across the country, Colonial Downs and Virginia HBPA is doing their part to not only bring awareness to aftercare but support it financially,” said TAA President Jimmy Bell. “What better day than Virginia Derby Day to highlight this important endeavor and their collaborative efforts in helping Thoroughbreds transition into their second careers.”

In addition to the Best Turned Out Horse Awards, the TAA presented the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Old Nelson Stakes, won by Graham Motion trainee Tuned (GB) for owner Al Shaqab Racing.
