TAA Offers Bucket List Race-Day Auction

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) has launched “Off to the Races,” an online auction providing opportunities to bid on VIP packages for 12 upcoming race days/weekends over the next 12 months. Each package gives the winner a unique experience of tickets to a major race combined with a range of racing-related “bucket-list” activities.

“The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is thrilled to present the inaugural 'Off to the Races' online auction,” said TAA president and managing director of Bloom Racing Stable Jeff Bloom. “Featured items include VIP access to the racing industry's most sought-after premier events. This is a huge opportunity to increase the awareness of aftercare while raising critical funds for the ongoing support of retired racehorses. All of this made possible by the support of our wonderful racetrack and industry sponsors.”

The featured race days begin with the 2022 GI Florida Derby and continue with the GI Arkansas Derby, GII Blue Grass S., GI Santa Anita Derby, GI Kentucky Oaks and Derby, GI Preakness S. GI Haskell S., GI Whitney S., Queen's Plate, GI Pacific Classic, the Breeders' Cup World Championships, and next year's GI Pegasus World Cup.

“The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is excited to kick off the new year with a brand-new auction campaign to support our growing number of accredited organizations and the thousands of Thoroughbreds in their care,” said TAA funding and events manager Emily (Dresen) Scandore. “We are thrilled with the support we've received from our auction donors and look forward to sharing some of racing's best days with industry participants and fans.”

Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance To Be On-Site At NTRA National Horseplayers Championship

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) announced today that it will be on-site to promote aftercare awareness at the NTRA National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) Jan. 28–30 at Bally's Las Vegas.

Horseplayers are invited to connect with TAA representatives, learn more about accredited Thoroughbred aftercare, enter drawings for select racing experiences, take home racing memorabilia, and donate to the TAA.

“Once again NTRA is proud to support the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance at our annual National Horseplayers Championship,” said Chief Operating Officer Keith Chamblin. “Supporting Aftercare has always been an objective of our organization and our tournaments.

“We are thankful for NTRA's support of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and the platform for aftercare provided by the prestigious NHC event,” said TAA Office Administrator Catherine Flowers. “We look forward to an exciting weekend of horse racing and celebrating horseplayers' commitment to our deserving equine athletes.”

Of the eight NHC 2022 eligible racetracks Aqueduct, Golden Gate Fields, Gulfstream Park, Laurel Park, Oaklawn Park, Santa Anita Park, and Tampa Bay Downs are proud supporters of the TAA.

Last Two Living Descendants Of Secretariat Celebrate Birthdays

Secretariat had more than 650 registered foals when he died, the last group born in 1990. Today, there are two living Secretariat offspring: 34-year-old Border Run and 33-year-old Trusted Company, both of whom celebrated birthdays on Jan. 1, reports Thoroughbred Racing Commentary.

Border Run is out of Crimson Saint and a full brother to Terlingua, the dam of Storm Cat. He sold for $650,000 as a yearling in 1988. He raced 41 times.

Now owned by Curtis Wright, Border Run spends his time turned out at a Washington Farm and is spoiled with bananas, mints, carrots and cookies. Though the gelding has some issues getting up from naps, he still eats with gusto.

Trusted Company resides at Bright Futures Farm, a Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA)-accredited sanctuary. The mare, out of Star Snoop, was born in 1989 and is the dam of Shatzi, who raced and was a broodmare in Peru. She had two foals of note: Pacatan and Lady Shatzi; both of whom won stakes races in Peru. Lady Shatzi was Peru's 2009 Horse of the Year.

Though Company battles arthritis, she is still able to run in the pasture and boss around her field mate, Catch This T, a 29-year-old gelding. “Company” receives twice weekly PEMF (pulsing electromagnetic field) treatments and an anti-inflammatory tablet each day to ease her aching joints.

2022 Accreditation Applications Now Available From Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance

The 2022 application for accreditation by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is now available on OpenWater and can be accessed through ThoroughbredAftercare.org/Accreditation.

Thoroughbred aftercare nonprofits interested in applying must complete the application by the closing date of April 1 at 6 p.m. ET. Since TAA accreditation is only granted for a specific period of time, organizations with accreditation status ending in 2021 that want to remain accredited need to re-apply.

Accreditation status is determined after a complete review of five areas of an aftercare organization: operations, education, horse health care management, facility standards and services, and adoption policies and protocols. Organizations passing the application review will be subject to site inspections of all facilities housing Thoroughbreds.

Organizations that receive accreditation are eligible to receive financial grants from the TAA, but prior grants awarded are no indication of potential future awards. In 2021 the TAA awarded $3.7 million to accredited organizations as grants earmarked specifically for equine care, totaling more than $24.5 million awarded since 2012.

Any organization interested in applying for TAA accreditation must fulfill the following five minimum requirements:

Organization must have a current status as a 501(c)(3) federal not-for-profit (U.S.) or must be a registered charity within the meaning of the Income Tax Act (Canada).
Organization must have been in operation for at least three years. The TAA will confirm operation information, including with the secretary of state or provincial business registry.
At time of application, organization must either (1) currently exclusively own and provide care for a minimum of 5 registered Thoroughbreds, or (2) currently exclusively own and provide care for at least 3-4 registered Thoroughbreds AND must have exclusively owned and provided care for at least 10 registered Thoroughbreds over the previous 12 months. Registered Thoroughbreds leased by the organization or owned by third parties at the same facility should not be included.
Organization must have a written euthanasia policy consistent with the American Association of Equine Practitioners.
Organization, or a principal of the organization or individual directly related to the organization, shall not have any current legal proceedings pending against them which adversely impact the aftercare operations, the organization's standards of care, or the 501(c)(3) status of the organization.
