Preakness Stakes To Be Featured In Kentucky Lottery’s Win Place Show On Oct. 3

EquiLottery Games and The Stronach Group have agreed to offer the Preakness Stakes through Win Place Show, the first ever lottery game based on the results of live horse race. Currently being offered by the Kentucky Lottery, Win Place Show features one race per day from racetracks across the U.S. and Preakness 145 will be the first Triple Crown race to be featured through this platform. Win Place Show launched statewide in Kentucky on August 16th of this year.

Due to this partnership, lottery players will be able to purchase Win Place Show draw game tickets based on the results of the Preakness Stakes at all lottery retailers in Kentucky. One of the premiere events on the U.S. sports calendar every year, the Preakness Stakes will run on October 3rd this year at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. This is the first time the Preakness will run as the last Triple Crown event of the year.

Win Place Show gives players a unique lottery experience by purchasing a two-dollar draw game ticket whose winnings are based on the results of a live horse race later that day. A QR code on each ticket allows players to download the Win Place Show mobile app to watch the race of each day live or on replay, scan tickets to check winnings, and set up a profile to help store and track their tickets throughout the day.

Due To Air Quality Concerns, Santa Anita Will Push Opening Day Back To Sept. 25

The opening day of Santa Anita's Autumn season will be pushed back a week until Friday, September 25, due to the impact of Bobcat Fire on the air quality and surrounding community.

“Our local community has been deeply impacted by the Bobcat Fire burning for more than a week in the mountains behind us,” said Aidan Butler, Executive Director of California Operations for The Stronach Group. “The current weather pattern has kept the smoke in the valley and the air quality is quite poor right now. The Red Cross is using Santa Anita as the evacuation zone for people – including many of our horsemen – whose homes are less than two miles from here. As excited as we are to welcome back live racing, we are first and foremost committed to safety. This is the responsible decision to make at this time so people can plan accordingly.”

“The stakes races set for this weekend will be brought back next weekend,” said Steve Lym, Santa Anita's VP – Racing & Racing Secretary. “The smoke has impacted some training schedules, so postponing until next weekend will allow everyone a chance to be ready to go. We are planning on filling extra races throughout the meet to give our horsemen the opportunity to run their horses.”

The Opening Week now will feature a blockbuster schedule of outstanding stakes action, offering over $2-million in purse money. The stakes schedule includes seven races which are “Win and You're In” races for the 2020 Breeders' Cup World Championships. The stakes races originally slotted for this weekend will be run as follows: the Chillingworth on Friday, September 25, the Speakeasy on Saturday, September 26 and the Tokyo City Cup on Sunday, September 27.

Entries for Opening Day, September 25, will be drawn on Sunday, September 20, as scheduled. First post will be 12:30 p.m. PT.

‘Maryland, My Maryland” Won’t Be Played at Preakness

The Stronach Group, which operates Pimlico, has confirmed that the song “Maryland, My Maryland” will no longer be played before the running of the GI Preakness S. The story was first reported by the racingbiz.com.

The song, which has been played at Pimlico since 1909, has stirred up controversy because its lyrics are meant to encourage Maryland to join the Confederacy. The sixth verse includes the following lines; “Dear Mother! burst the tyrant’s chain, Maryland! Virginia should not call in vain, Maryland! She meets her sisters on the plain-‘Sic semper!’ ’tis the proud refrain.”

The song was adapted from a poem by James Ryder Randal, which called the Union “Northern scum.”

At the Preakness, only the third verse, one that is not particularly controversial, is usually played.

In the aftermath of the George Floyd death, Maryland House Speaker Adrienne Jones (D-Baltimore County) announced she would lead an effort to remove Maryland, My Maryland as the state’s official song.

“The Maryland Jockey Club is respectful and supportive of Speaker Jones’ move to remove ‘Maryland My Maryland’ as the state song, and we look forward to starting a new tradition for Preakness 145,” the Stronach Group said in a statement.

In another sign of the times, Pimlico has changed the name of the GII Dixie S. It will now be known by its original name, the Dinner Party S. The race has been run since 1870.

Santa Anita, Golden Gate To Partner On ‘Golden Hour Late Pick 4’ With 15 Percent Takeout

Santa Anita and Golden Gate Fields have announced they will partner on a brand new low takeout “Golden Hour Late Pick 4,” effective Saturday, Sept. 19, the opening day of Santa Anita's 18-day Autumn Meet.

The wager, which features a one dollar minimum and a low takeout of 15 percent, will be comprised of the last two races at both Santa Anita and Golden Gate each racing day and will complement the successful “Golden Hour Late Double,” which was instituted by the two tracks this past winter.

The “Golden Hour Late Pick 4” will begin with Santa Anita's second to last race for Leg One, then go to Golden Gate for Leg Two, back to Santa Anita for Leg Three end up each day at Golden Gate with Leg Four, which will be the last race on their program.

“We've had a very encouraging response to the 'Golden Hour Double' and believe our customers will respond well to this new low takeout wager,” said Santa Anita's Aidan Butler, Executive Director, CA Racing Operations, for The Stronach Group. “We've heard feedback from many of our players asking for this type of bet—one that provides a player friendly new wager with a one dollar minimum, capitalizing on the larger competitive fields at the end of the card.

“This is a fun new addition to our betting menu and will drive extra attention to both of our California tracks as the racing action across the country is winding down each day.”
