Friday The 13th Luck On The Line In Special Stronach 5

Bettors will have an opportunity to get lucky on a special Friday the 13th edition of the Stronach 5 with races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park West and Golden Gate Fields.

Beginning at approximately 3:24 p.m. EST, the Stronach 5 will once again feature an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

Laurel will kick off the Stronach 5 with three consecutive racing starting in Race 7, a waiver maiden claimer for 2-year-olds sprinting seven furlongs that attracted a field of 12 juveniles led by 9-5 program favorite Hello Hot Rod from the red-hot barn of trainer Brittany Russell.

The sequence continues in Race 8, a starter optional claimer for 3-year-olds and up going six furlongs where Nomo Ron, a last out winner at the track and distance, is the 5-2 top choice in a field of nine, and Laurel's Race 9 finale, a maiden claiming event for 3-year-olds and up at about 1 1/16 miles.

Action moves to Gulfstream Park West's Race 9 finale for Leg D, a one-mile claiming event for fillies and mares 3 and up scheduled for the grass featuring 2-1 turf favorite Hoponthebusgus, a seven-time career winner of nearly $260,000 in purses, and Free to Fly, the top choice should the race be moved to the main track.

Wrapping up the Stronach 5 is Race 3 from Golden Gate, a maiden claimer for fillies and mares 3 and up sprinting five furlongs over the all-weather surface. Barbara DeLima homebred Irenie, second in her previous start, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

Stronach 5: Three Tracks Provide Challenging Sequence In Friday’s Wager

Races from Gulfstream Park West, Laurel Park and Golden Gate Fields, including two on the turf, will provide bettors a challenging sequence in Friday's Stronach 5.

Beginning at approximately 3:58, the Stronach 5 will once again feature an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

The Stronach 5 begins at Gulfstream West with the eighth race, a $43,000 allowance optional claimer over 7 ½ furlongs on the turf that has attracted a dozen fillies and mares. The field includes a pair from the Mark Casse barn in Pardon My Heart and Dynatown as well as the stakes placed Pugilist.

Laurel Park's seventh race is next, a 5 ½ furlong event for Maryland-sired or Maryland-bred fillies and mares. The field includes Odd Gal, winner last time out of the Maryland Million Distaff Starter Handicap, and Kiss the Girl, second in the 2019 Schuylerville (G3) who races for the first time for trainer Mike Trombetta.

The third leg of the sequence will be the first race from Golden Gate, a maiden special weight event for California breds. The field includes Zagrah, a 3-year-old filly by Dansili making her third start in the U.S., and Eddie's Sister, a daughter of Square Eddie from the barn of trainer Jonathan Wong.

Gulfstream West's ninth race, a six furlong, allowance optional claiming event will be the Stronach 5's fourth leg. The race has attracted Man of Honor, second in three consecutive races, Septemberten, first or second in four of his last five starts, and Ikeisgreat, a 6 ½-length winner of his last against starter allowance company.

The sequence ends with Laurel's eighth race, a very competitive mile event for maidens 3 and up. The morning-line favorite at 4-1 is Galilean Moon.

Costanzo Named Gulfstream Racing Secretary

Michael Costanzo has been appointed Gulftream Park’s new racing secretary, replacing the outgoing Dave Bailey. Costanzo had served as the track’s assistant racing secretary for the past year. A Chicago native and graduate of the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program, he joined the Gulfstream racing office in 2009 and was its stakes coordinator for five years before becoming assistant racing secretary. He was previously part of the Breeders’ Cup notes team and public relations manager at Calder Race Course.

“We’re delighted with the work Mike has done for more than 10 years at Gulfstream. He’s excelled at all positions and he has a great understanding of the industry,” said Mike Lakow, Vice President of Racing at Gulfstream. “His hard work and dedication has earned him this promotion, which is well deserved. We are confident Mike will build on our year-round program.”

Major Racing Organizations to Jointly Fund Study On Lasix in 2-Year-Olds

The Stronach Group, Breeders’ Cup Ltd., Churchill Downs Inc., Keeneland, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and the New York Racing Association, Inc. have agreed to jointly fund North America’s largest study on the effects of furosemide and on the prevalence and severity of Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH) in 2-year-old racehorses.

The study, formally titled Furosemide: Its Effects on the Prevalence and Severity of Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH) and the Immune System’s Normal Response to Exercise in Two-Year-Old Racehorses, began this month and is being led by Dr. Warwick Bayly and Dr. Macarena Sanz from the Department of Veterinary Clinical Services at Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

The study will aim to address the debate surrounding whether or not injection of furosemide has beneficial, detrimental or no effects on the welfare of 2-year-olds. The use of furosemide and its effects has been a dominant issue confronting North American racing for more than a decade. The study will try to address unanswered questions at the heart of furosemide use, namely:

  • Does the administration of furosemide four hours before racing and/or training reduce the severity of EIPH in two-year-old racehorses?
  • Does the pre-race administration of furosemide four hours before racing effect a horse’s performance?

The study will evaluate the endoscopic exams from at least 600 horses from three groups representing the major racing jurisdictions of California, Delaware, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. Horses will be evaluated in three groups: 1) those who are given furosemide at least 48 hours before racing or not at all; 2) those who are given furosemide 24 hours before racing or not at all and; 3) those who are administered furosemide four hours before racing. Veterinary practitioners from each of the jurisdictions will be asked to recruit trainers who are existing clients to voluntarily participate in the study.

“This study provides an opportunity to fill a critical knowledge gap on the use of furosemide,” said Dr. Warwick Bayly, Professor, Equine Medicine, Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. “As a first-of-its-kind study of this depth, it is our hope that once completed we will be able to provide additional information that will enable the horse racing industry to address the regulation of furosemide in the United States from a scientifically-informed perspective.”

“The current patchwork of rules and regulations across the United States regarding the administration of furosemide does a disservice to the horses and the practitioners who care for them,” said Dr. Dionne Benson, Chief Veterinary Officer, The Stronach Group. “This study is an opportunity for industry stakeholders to come together to invest in meaningful steps to address pressing questions so that we may develop a higher and more consistent standard of rules and regulations.”

Preliminary results from the study are expected to be available in spring 2021, assuming the quantity and quality of the samples satisfy the requirements for statistical relevance as set out by Dr. Bayly and Dr. Sanz.
