Maxfield won the 2019 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland in his second start for owner-breeder Godolphin and trainer Brendan Walsh and headed west as one of the favorites for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Park. But he was scratched from the race and underwent surgery for an ankle chip a couple of weeks later, costing himself a championship opportunity.
