Women in Racing Awarded Additional Grants for Racing Portal

The Racing Foundation has awarded £64,240 and Kindred Group has contributed £20,000 in grants to Women in Racing, an organization working to improve the working lives of parents and caregivers in the horse racing industry. The funds will assist Phase Two of the Racing Home project for education and empowerment initiatives for all employers, employees, and self-employed workers within the racing industry.

The first phase facilitated the development of the Racing Home Portal, an online platform that provides the horse racing community information, advice and support about rights and entitlements regarding pregnancy, maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental leave, flexible working, self-employment and statutory pay. Phase Two of the Racing Home project includes further development of the online portal. Input will be collected from stud and stable staff, as well as the corporate side of the industry to ensure the information is relevant in order to enhance the user experience.

“Supporting and retaining working parents and carers is a vital component in ensuring a sustainable workforce for British racing,” Tansy Challis, Chief Executive of the Racing Foundation said. “The Racing Foundation is proud to fund Phase Two of the Racing Home
project and looks forward to seeing the impact it makes while building on the success of the initial phase.”

Racing Foundation Granted More Than £7 Million in 2022

Over £7 million was granted to charitable causes in British racing in 2022 by the Racing Foundation, which released its annual review on Tuesday. This amount matches its giving record from the previous year in the areas of people, equine welfare, community engagement, and environmentally sustainability.

In 2022, the Racing Foundation:

• Instigated and contributed to the formation of the Industry People Board
• Aligned its giving capacity with other funders within the sport, notably the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB), to whom it granted £3m in 2022 for the second year.
• Funded key ED&I projects across the sport, such as the Riding a Dream Academy and Racing Media Academy
• Increased its funding commitment to National Racehorse week
• Delivered the Horseracing Industry Conference with record attendance

“We believe our four key areas of focus are crucial for the long-term sustainability and success of the horseracing industry,

Rob Hezel, Chief Executive at the Racing Foundation, said. “Whilst once they may have been considered 'nice to have', they are now fundamental issues every sport and industry must manage. The Racing Foundation's purpose is to make a difference in racing by acting as a catalyst and funder of improvement.”

The full annual review is available in video form and can be seen here.

The Racing Foundation Grants £3M to Horse Welfare Board

The Racing Foundation has awarded the Horse Welfare Board a grant of £3million over three years to support its cross-industry work to improve equine welfare in British racing.

The grant will be used to deliver the horse welfare projects identified in the industry's “A life well-lived” strategy–a five-year plan to ensure the highest standards of welfare for all horses bred for British racing. Released in stages over the next three years, the funding will cover multiple projects to drive forward important developments in safety, data, and traceability along with supporting program and executive team costs.

Obstacle improvement and development and the advancement of the sport's Jump Racing Risk Model (JRRM) are two of the Horse Welfare Board's key safety projects for the first year of the grant. With support from external epidemiology experts, the JRRM will become a one-stop-shop for data on racehorse falls to identify trends and help drive forward the sport's risk management actions.

Helena Flynn, Horse Welfare Board Program Director said, “Since the formation of the team last year, detailed work has been carried out to scope, prioritize, and cost the core initiatives from the Life Well Lived Strategy. To date, we have delivered the implementation of the equine vision project, have redefined racing's responsibility to Thoroughbreds at their first step out of racing and have laid the groundwork for critical data projects. We now have 17 projects live and with the Racing Foundation's core funding secured we can progress at speed.”

Racing Showcase on The Hill On Cazoo Oaks and Derby Days

There will be a special interactive display on The Hill at Epsom Downs in recognition of The Queen's passion for the Thoroughbred during the official Platinum Jubilee celebrations on Cazoo Oaks and Cazoo Derby Days, June 3-4. Billed the Racing Showcase, the display will highlight the care that is shown for racehorses throughout their lives, how the racing industry is engaging and inspiring young people to look at racing as a career, the provisions the industry makes for its people and how racing is looking to reach out to communities it has not engaged with before. Amongst the organisations represented are The Racing Foundation, British Racing School, Racing to School, Epsom Riding for the Disabled, Ebony Horse Club, Retraining of Racehorses, Racing Welfare, Injured Jockeys Fund, Careers in Racing, Discover Newmarket, The National Stud, The National Horse Racing Museum and Great British Racing International.

Simon Durrant, General Manager of Epsom Downs Racecourse, said, “As part of the official celebrations for The Queen's Platinum Jubilee, we felt that it was important to highlight Her Majesty's passion both for racing and the horse in general.

“Over the 70 years of her reign, The Queen's interest extends far beyond what happens on the track and we feel it is important that this is both recognised and celebrated.

“The Racing Showcase on The Hill will enable the public to engage with and learn more about many aspects of racing and the wider equine world. I am delighted that so many organisations have agreed to participate and hopefully their efforts to educate, inform and inspire will show just what a fantastic industry and sport we work in.”
