The Friday Show Presented By Monmouth Park: After Navarro’s Guilty Plea, What’s Next?

Following the guilty pleas over the last 10 days from veterinarian Kristian Rhein and trainer Jorge Navarro, the Paulick Report's three-time Eclipse Award-winning editor-in-chief Natalie Voss answers questions from readers and offers her own analysis of where the 18-month-old federal anti-doping criminal case stands and where it may be going.

Voss joins publisher Ray Paulick to explain Navarro's plea and the potential prison term and monetary consequences he faces.

Among the questions we've been asked are: What does Navarro's plea mean to some of the other individuals indicted, including trainer Jason Servis? Will any horses from the stables of convicted trainers or treated with performance-enhancing drugs by convicted veterinarians be disqualified from any victories? Will owners of horses who won purses through cheating trainers or veterinarians be on the hook for any monetary damages? Are more criminal indictments expected in the coming weeks or months?

Bloodstock editor Joe Nevills joins the show to review the Lake Huron Stakes win by the Woodbine Star of the Week, Forest Survivor, a 3-year-old Ontario-bred Old Forester colt who hung tough in the stretch after setting fast fractions under jockey Kazushi Kimura.

The Friday Show Presented By Monmouth Park: Kenny McPeek On Swiss Skydiver

Kenny McPeek admits he's not the most conventional trainer in America. Peter Callahan's multiple Grade 1 winner Swiss Skydiver, who McPeek is sending out against colts for the third time on Saturday in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs. N.Y., is Exhibit A.

“European racing they don't think twice about doing this. In Australia they don't think anything about it,” McPeek said. “American racing tends to 'stay in your lane,' per se. You're not supposed to get out of your lane. Well, I'm not always that. I've been known to do things differently anyways, so what the heck.”

McPeek joins Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills to talk about the Eclipse Award-winning filly's career and how he decided to run her in the Whitney. He also reveals how he approaches the yearling sales with a limited budget and manages to find some of the hidden gems that have led to his career 100 graded stakes wins.

Paulick and Nevills also review the Woodbine Star of the Week, Munnyfor Ro, winner of the Woodbine Oaks, who poses a serious challenge for the Queen's Plate, a race that fillies have performed very well in over the last 20 years.

The Friday Show Presented By Monmouth Park: What’s The Deal With Zayat?

When attorneys representing Ahmed Zayat asked a U.S. bankruptcy court judge to let them drop out of the case because they allege the Eclipse Award-winning owner and breeder stopped paying them, some wondered why any law firm would represent an individual whose racing stable owed so much money to so many people.

We aren't experts on legal issues, so went to someone who is: Bob Heleringer, a Louisville, Ky., attorney and former state legislator who joins Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills to discuss the Zayat case. (Full disclosure: Heleringer said he represents trainer Rudy Rodriguez, one of several trainers to whom Zayat Stables owes money, according to court documents.)

While Heleringer's expertise is in equine regulatory law, he has some interesting comments and observations about the Zayat bankruptcy and the $23-million lawsuit filed against him by MGG Investment Group alleging fraud and breach of contract on a loan.

Joe and Ray review the performance by Jolie Olimpica, the Woodbine Star of the Week who carried the red and white Fox Hill Farm colors of the late Rick Porter to victory in last week's Grade 2 Nassau Stakes.

The Friday Show Presented By Monmouth Park: Perry Ouzts. Ageless Wonder

Like much of what he's done throughout a riding career that began in 1973, the occasion of jockey Perry Wayne Ouzts' 52,000th mount on July 20 got scant attention. It was just another day in the office for the 67-year-old, who recorded three wins that same afternoon at Belterra Park in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Ouzts now sits at 7,200 career victories, sixth on the all-time list and first among active riders.

No one has followed Ouzts' career closer than John Engelhardt, a writer, photographer, host of the Winning Ponies podcast and former publicist at River Downs, the Cincinnati track where Arkansas native Ouzts rode for so many years. (Belterra racetrack and casino was built where the old River Downs was located.)

Engelhardt joins publisher Ray Paulick (a 67-year-old who will not be doing any horseback riding) and news editor Chelsea Hackbarth (who got to know Ouzts when she was working at defunct Beulah Park) to share stories and answer some questions about the riding legend who was the subject of the Hennegan Brothers' Eclipse Award-winning documentary, “Ironman Perry Ouzts,”

Ray and Chelsea also review last weekend's Connaught Cup and the winner, Avie's Flatter, who earned Woodbine Star of the Week honors.
