The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: An Unsolvable Problem?

William T. Young, the late Kentucky philanthropist, businessman and Thoroughbred owner and breeder who stood Storm Cat at his Overbrook Farm, was never one to mince words. When discussing issues that challenged business, society or the horse industry, Young might come to the unusual conclusion that “what you've got here is an unsolvable problem.”

That perspective might apply to the retirement to stud of successful racehorses at the height of their popularity with the public. Just as they build a following inside of the sport and even break through with some who don't follow racing, they are whisked off to the breeding shed.

Such was the case with Flightline, the son of leading sire Tapit whose racing career at ages 3 and 4 included six consecutive victories – culminating with his Nov. 5 triumph in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic – under the skillful management of trainer John Sadler and his staff.

If such retirements truly are a problem, can anything be done to change the dynamics that lead to them? That's the topic of this week's Friday Show discussion between Ray Paulick, Joe Nevills and Jonathan Horowitz, the latter of whom this week launched the first in a series of commentaries meant to encourage dialogue in addressing problematic issues facing the game.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Breeders’ Cup Locks And Longshots

Undefeated Flightline is expected to be the shortest-priced runner in this year's Breeders' Cup world championships when he faces seven others in Saturday's $6-million Classic at Keeneland race course in Lexington, Ky. But are there can't-miss “locks” in any of the other 13 championship races that begin on Friday?

In this week's special Breeders' Cup edition of the Friday Show, publisher Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills are joined by Andrew Champagne, whose public selections for Saratoga appear every summer in the “Pink Sheet.” They've each combed through the past performances and watched countless replays in an effort to identify that one horse that just can't lose.

Paulick's pick is in the first Breeders' Cup race, Friday's Juvenile Turf Sprint. Champagne found a can't-miss runner in Saturday's Dirt Mile and Nevills likes a most familiar runner in Saturday's Turf Sprint.

In addition to their “locks,” the trio picks one longshot they like in the Breeders' Cup, with Nevills finding an upset special in the Filly & Mare Sprint, Champagne in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, and Paulick's longshot special coming in the Turf.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Jockey Agent Ron Anderson Looks Ahead To The Breeders’ Cup

Ron Anderson, in his 50th year as a jockey agent, has represented some of the sport's greatest riders, including Hall of Famers Chris Antley, Jerry Bailey, Garrett Gomez, Gary Stevens, and John Velazquez. Anderson currently represents Velazquez and Joel Rosario, who won the Eclipse Award as outstanding jockey in 2021.

Breeders' Cup has been especially rewarding for Anderson, who has booked 38 championship day winners for his riders dating back to the first Breeders' Cup in 1984, when Fernando Toro guided Royal Heroine to victory in the Grade 1 Mile for John Gosden.

Anderson joins Ray Paulick and Joe Nevills in this week's Friday Show, discussing some of the top mounts that Velazquez and Rosario will handle at this year's 39th Breeders' Cup. He also explains the role of the agent and discusses how the game and his profession have changed over the years.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: John Sadler On Flightline

Trainer John Sadler joins Ray Paulick and Joe Nevills on this week's Friday Show to discuss – what else? – Flightline, the undefeated Tapit colt rated No. 1 in the Longines World's Best Racehorse rankings.

Sadler, a Southern California native who has been training since the late 1970s, indicates what he is looking for in Flightline's final work on Saturday at Santa Anita before he flies to Kentucky to finish his preparations for the Grade 1, $6-million Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland racecourse on Nov. 5. The trainer said Flightline will likely have one more breeze in Kentucky before the Classic.

While he said he respects all of Flightline's competition in the Classic, Sadler said he has been especially keeping a close eye on Life Is Good, a three-time Grade 1 winner in 2022 who captured the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar last year.

He also shares his thoughts on what differentiates the great horses from the good ones, talks about the best horse he's seen prior to Flightline, and pays tribute to the late Dr. Jack Robbins, the widely respected veterinarian that Sadler says was the biggest influence on his career. Sadler worked as an assistant to Robbins prior to taking out his license as a trainer.
