The Friday Show Presented By PHBA Stallion Show: Talking Eclipse Awards

While there will be no suspense when undefeated Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic winner Flightline is crowned 2022 Horse of the Year, some of the divisional awards to be presented at the 52nd annual Eclipse Awards Jan. 26 will be more contentious.

The Eclipse Awards will be held for the first time at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla., with cocktails and a red carpet event starting at 6 p.m. ET and dinner and awards show following from 7-10 p.m. FanDuel TV will televise the awards and will also broadcast the announcement of the divisional finalists on Jan. 7  at 11:30 a.m. ET.

With voting closed earlier this week, Andrew Champagne, handicapper for the Saratogian newspaper's Pink Sheet each summer, joins Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills to discuss the pros and cons of some of the contenders for divisional awards.

Among the more hotly debated races is the Eclipse Award for 3-year-old males, where Taiba stands out as a three-time Grade 1 winner but Epicenter seems to hold sway for his consistency throughout the year, finishing second in the first two legs of the Triple Crown and winning the G1 Travers at Saratoga.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Hackbarth’s ‘Pursuit Of Excellence’

When she wasn't busy writing news stories or adding content to our website, taking care of her horses every morning, or giving riding lessons on weekends, Paulick Report news editor Chelsea Hackbarth found the time over the last couple of years to research and write a book that tells the stories of the founding veterinarians and shareholders at the world-renowned Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky.

The book, titled “In Pursuit of Excellence: The Stories of Rood & Riddle Veterinarians,” details the lives and professional experiences of some of the top equine practitioners in the world. It is available through Rood & Riddle's online pharmacy here.

Hackbarth, a master story-teller with hands-on experience working at the track and with her own horses, is this week's Friday Show guest, joining Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills to talk about the process of researching and writing “In Pursuit Of Excellence,” and what it was like to interview some of the equine world's most respected and knowledgeable veterinarians. She recounts a day spent watching Dr. Larry Bramlage conducting surgeries and then quickly adding meticulously detailed notes into a tape recorder. “'It blew my mind,” Hackbarth said.

This week's Friday Show, which coincides with closing weekend at our year-long sponsor Woodbine, will be our final episode of 2022. We greatly appreciate Woodbine's support throughout the year, the special guests who have joined us, and all of the viewers who have tuned in.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Tom Amoss On The ‘Most Special Horse I’ve Ever Had’

Trainer Tom Amoss joins Ray Paulick and Joe Nevills on this week's Friday Show to talk about his unbeaten 2-year-old filly Hoosier Philly, who ran her record to a perfect 3-for-3 with a five-length victory at Churchill Downs on Nov. 26 in the Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes.

A daughter of red-hot sire Into Mischief out of a mare by Tapit who races for Bill Stone and Rod Ratcliff's Gold Standard Racing Stable, Hoosier Philly was a $510,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase that Amoss said outworked all of his other 2-year-olds to the point he had to start pairing her up with older horses to make sure she was getting enough out of her training.

“We knew we had something different than we've ever had before, and I've been doing this since 1987,” Amoss said. “I said before she ever ran, I've never had one get ready like she's getting ready, and when she started displaying in the afternoons it became clear to me that we have a really special horse – the most special horse I've ever had.”

In the aftermath of the Golden Rod, Amoss said he has “flirted” with the idea of putting Hoosier Philly on the road to the Kentucky Derby instead of the Kentucky Oaks, a race he won in 2019 with Serengeti Empress. On the Friday Show, he said, “I'm not going to do anything with her that she doesn't suggest she's ready for.”

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: 2022 Turkey Awards

It's time again for the Paulick Report Turkey Awards, an annual event that recognizes some of the less-than-spectacular events of the past year.

As always, there was an abundance of candidates for these prestigious awards and the nominating committee carefully screened all of the potential winners before putting the nominees up before a secretive online poll.

In keeping with the general transparency policies of the industry, we are not able to  divulge the voters or the list of nominees, but trust us when we tell you it was a record turnout, unlike anything we've ever seen before.

Some of the usual suspects make an appearance in this year's Turkey Awards, but there are some newcomers, too. Jockeys, trainers, racing officials … even a bird or two. We recognize bad behavior on the racetrack as well as on social media platforms. There are so many awards given to recognize outstanding achievements and good behavior, we felt it only fair to offer alternative programming.

So without further adieu, we invite you to sit back and enjoy this year's Turkey Awards broadcast.
