Curragh To Inspect Ahead Of Guineas

Heavy rain in Ireland in the last 24 hours has left the Curragh racecourse partly waterlogged, forcing a 7.30am inspection on Saturday ahead of the first of two Classic race days this weekend.

The racecourse's chief executive Pat Keogh confirmed that the course is currently unraceable. He said: “We got a lot more rain than we anticipated overnight. We were forecast 15 millimetres at the most in the last 24 hours, and we got 35 millimetres. It's come completely out of left field, unfortunately.”

He added, “The track would not be raceable today. Most of the track is raceable, but there are a few [waterlogged] areas and we will look to get that off the track.

“We're hopeful, but we will have a precautionary inspection tomorrow morning.”

Along with the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas, the first of two days of racing is also set to feature three further Group races, while the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas and G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup is set to be staged on Sunday.

Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas Likely For Fev Rover

Group 2 winner Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}), who ran third in the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 2, will likely make her next appearance in the G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas on May 23. Runner-up in the G2 Duchess Of Cambridge S. at second asking in July, the Richard Fahey-trained bay took a listed at Sandown later that month, before winning Deauville's G2 Shadwell Prix du Calvados on Aug. 22. The Nick Bradley Racing silksbearer ended her season with a fourth in the G1 Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac-Criterium des Pouliches in heavy going on Oct. 4. The 1000 Guineas was her first run as a sophomore.

“Fev Rover will work tomorrow and we will then have a think of what to do,” said Nick Bradley, Managing Director of Nick Bradley Racing. “We will look at the entries and either go there or wait for Ascot. At the moment I would say she is likely to go to Ireland.

“It was a great run in the 1000 Guineas and I think the track at The Curragh would suit her more than the Rowley Mile. If you watch her races she generally makes most of her ground up running up hill and The Curragh is a stiffer track than the Rowley Mile.

“Looking at the field so far for Sunday I'd like to think she could be up in the first two or three again on a track that will suit.”

Broome Headlines Monday Sport

The Curragh is all action on Monday, with the G2 Coolmore Sottsass Irish EBF Mooresbridge S. the key component of a fascinating card. Aidan O'Brien has opted to wait longer to unleash Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and instead puts forward the reinvigorated Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who looks to be in a good place this year with wins on soft ground in the Listed Devoy S. at Naas Mar. 28 and on a much slicker surface in the Apr. 17 G3 Alleged S. over this 10-furlong trip. Beaten around half a length when fourth in the 2019 G1 Epsom Derby, the bay who races in the Masaaki Matsushima silks is on his way back to that kind of level and even gets three pounds from the reigning G1 Melbourne Cup hero Twilight Payment (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). That contest follows the Listed Gain First Flier S. for juveniles, where another Ballydoyle representative is the likely favourite in the impressive Apr. 10 Dundalk maiden winner Cadamosto (Ire) (No Nay Never). He encounters Donnacha's similarly taking Apr. 20 Tipperary scorer Elliptic (Ire) who looks to provide Caravaggio with his first black-type winner.

Also on the card is the seven-furlong G3 Coolmore Stud Circus Maximus Irish EBF Athasi S., where last year's G1 Matron S. heroine Champers Elysees (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) makes her keenly-anticipated return in the Teruya Yoshida colours. Racing under a five-pound penalty, she also has a hefty extra 12-pound weight-for-age burden taking on another notable Rosegreen runner in the five-length course-and-distance maiden winner Queen's Speech (American Pharoah). Trainer Johnny Murtagh is aware of the task facing Champers Elysees and said, “It can be difficult with a penalty, but it's a good starting place for her. She's strengthened up and there's a big year ahead for her. There are a few nice fillies' races and we're looking forward to Royal Ascot with her. We're not sure which race yet. We'll have to see how tomorrow goes.”

Over the same trip is the Listed Dick McCormick Irish EBF Tetrarch S., where Zhang Yuesheng's Ace Aussie (Ire) (Australia {GB}) reappears having been just 1 1/2 lengths off Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) when runner-up in the Listed Ballylinch Stud 2000 Guineas Trial over this distance at Leopardstown Apr. 11.

Broome Gets It Done In The Alleged

While he had to work to land odds of 1-2 in Saturday's G3 Holden Plant Rentals Alleged S. at The Curragh, Coolmore and Masaaki Matsushima's Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) managed to collect and maintain his perfect sequence in 2021. Authoritative when taking the Listed Devoy S. over this 10-furlong trip on contrasting soft ground at Naas Mar. 28, the 2019 G3 Ballysax S. and G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial S. winner who was also a close fourth in that year's G1 Epsom Derby is back on an even keel this term and was providing Aidan O'Brien with a third renewal in the last four runnings of a race which is becoming increasingly important to the operation. Settled fifth early, the bay was three lengths off the pace and looking in possible trouble two out but after hitting that flat spot stayed on to collar Thundering Nights (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) near the line for a half-length success. Ryan Moore, who was completing the third part of a four-timer for the stable on the afternoon, said, “I think he did very well to win today, as it was just a little bit messy early on and I had to wait a bit. The way the ground is today and with the wind, it is hard to make up ground but he showed a great attitude. He was a very good 3-year-old and he's in a better place now–he's done nothing wrong this year.”

O'Brien is looking at a possible step back up in trip with the winner and said, “He's a lovely horse and will probably love going back up to a mile and a half. It was nice that he didn't have to make the running and Ryan was very happy with him. We can have a look at races like the [G1] Coronation Cup [at Epsom June 4] and the [G1] Tattersalls [Gold Cup at this venue May 23]. Ryan felt the pace was nice early and then dropped in the middle of the race. He had to work a bit harder than if the pace was consistent over a mile and a quarter. He's brave.”

Broome's dam is the Listed National S.-winning and G3 Princess Margaret S. and GIII Appalachian S.-placed Sweepstake (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), whose dam Dust Flicker (GB) (Suave Dancer) is a full-sister to the G3 Prix de la Nonette winner Dust Dancer (GB). The latter is in turn the second dam of this stable's G1 Phoenix S.-winning sire Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), the G2 Futurity S. winner and G1 Irish Derby runner-up Rostropovich (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and the G3 Bengough S. winner Projection (GB) who shares Acclamation as a sire with Sweepstake. Dust Flicker is also kin to the G3 Fred Darling S. scorer Bulaxie (GB) (Bustino {GB}), who herself produced the G2 Premio Lydia Tesio winner Claxon (GB) (Caerleon) with the latter responsible for Cassydora (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) who took the GIII Hillsborough S. and was runner-up in G1 Nassau S.

Cassydora's three black-type winners include the multiple group winner Ernest Hemingway (Ire) by Australia's sire Galileo (Ire) and the G3 Prix d'Aumale winner Toulifaut (Ire) by Rostropovich's sire Frankel, while the family also features last year's G1 St Leger runner-up Berkshire Rocco (Fr) (Sir Percy {GB}). Sweepstake also has the once-raced 3-year-old filly by Frankel named Malathaat (Ire), an as-yet unnamed 2-year-old full-brother to Broome and a yearling filly by Lope de Vega (Ire).
