Dubai Duty Free Extends Sponsorship Of Irish Derby, Returns To Sunday Slot

Dubai Duty Free will continue their sponsorship of the G1 Irish Derby, as they renewed their partnership with the Curragh, the duo announced on Tuesday. In addition, the prize-money for the Irish Classic will increase from€1 million to €1.25 million in 2023, and five additional races will be sponsored by the airport retailer. For the first time since 2011, the Irish Derby will take place on a Sunday, with 2023's date set to be July 2. The full eight-race card will also become a permanent part of the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Tote World Pool for the first time next year. The Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Weekend will take place from June 30-July 2. An evening meeting will be conducted on Friday, and Saturday's Ladies Day will feature the G1 Alwasmiyah Pretty Polly S. and the Kildare Village Ladies Derby.

Dubai Duty Free Executive Vice Chairman & CEO, Colm McLoughlin said, “Our title sponsorship of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby is in line with our global strategy of promoting both our own duty-free brand and the city of Dubai itself. We have successfully sponsored the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby for the past 15 years and we are happy to extend our sponsorship, with an increase in prize-money, and look forward to working with the Curragh to grow this event even further.”

Curragh CEO, Brian Kavanagh said, “We are delighted to announce this extension to the Derby sponsorship and the increase in prize-money for the Derby itself. We are also very pleased that Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Day has been selected as a Tote World Pool event and excited about the switch back to a Sunday which will allow the three-day Festival to build up to its feature race.”

Saxon Warrior’s Lumiere Rock In Command At The Curragh

Still a maiden entering Saturday's G3 Staffordstown Stud S. at The Curragh, Michael O'Flynn's Lumiere Rock (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) stepped up to make all and shed that status in style for the Joseph O'Brien stable.

Let go at 11-1, the 55,000gns Book 2 graduate was committed by Mikey Sheehy and relished the front-running role, giving plenty when briefly headed 1 1/2 furlongs out by Speirling Beag (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) who had beaten her last time over this mile trip at Gowran Park Sept. 17 and securing a 1 1/2-length success from Gozen (Ire) (Kuroshio {Aus}).

“I've ridden her on all three previous starts and the last day we went steady and she just lacks that bit of a gear,” Sheehy said. “Today I was able to make the running and dictate the pace. I kept building it from the four and in fairness to her, every time a horse joined me she kept finding more.”

Pedigree Notes

Lumiere Rock, who was also second to the subsequent G3 Weld Park S. third Keep In Touch (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) over seven furlong at Galway Sept. 6, becomes the second group winner for her first-season sire. Her dam Last Gold (Fr) (Gold Away {Ire}) is kin to the Group 3-winning full-siblings Akihiro (Jpn) and Bartaba (Fr), who had their finest hours in the Prix des Chenes and Prix Belle de Nuit, respectively and are by Saxon Warrior's sire Deep Impact (Jpn).

The second dam is the G3 Prix d'Aumale winner Baahama (Ire) (Anbaa), while the family also features the G2 Prix de Malleret winner Silver Fun (Saumarez {GB}) and the illustrious trio of Gold River (Fr), Riviere d'Or and Gold Splash. Last Gold's yearling filly by Zoffany (Ire) sells at next week's Book 3 Sale, while she also has a filly foal by Starspangledbanner (Aus).

Galileo’s Espionage A New Rising Star At The Curragh

A day after Ballydoyle had demonstrated the power of their 2-year-old reserves at Newmarket, Espionage (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) became the stable's 11th TDN Rising Star juvenile of 2022 in The Curragh's opening maiden on Sunday. Unlucky on debut when runner-up to stablemate and fellow TDN Rising Star Alexandroupolis (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) over an extended mile at Galway Sept. 6, the son of the G2 Ribblesdale S. winner Even Song (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) was sent forward by Ryan Moore dropping back to seven for this Williamhill.ie Irish EBF Maiden. Clear from two out on the far side, the 9-4 favourite had 1 3/4 lengths to spare over stablemate Sierra Blanca (Ire) (No Nay Never), a son of Alexandrova (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), at the line with another half a length back to the well-regarded Michael O'Callaghan trainee Djockovic (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) in third.

“He ran well the last day, when the other horse got up the rail and he had to come around,” Aidan O'Brien said of the imperious sire's 41st TDN Rising Star. “Ryan said he's babyish and when he got to the start he was a little bit anxious. He might go for something like the [G3] Killavullan or the [G3] Eyrefield at Leopardstown. We won't force him. He looks a middle-distance horse for next year and usually when you get a Galileo that wins over seven it bodes well.”

Even Song, who is a half-sister to the G1 St Leger and G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares heroine Simple Verse (Ire) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}) and to the G2 Superlative S.-placed Maxentius (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), also has a yearling full-sister to the winner and a filly foal by Wootton Bassett (GB) to come.

Kyprios Clinches Irish St Leger Success To Crown Memorable Season

Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore sugarcoated a wonderful Longines Irish Champions Weekend by bagging the G1 Irish St Leger with the Moyglare Stud-owned Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Sent to post a warm favourite at odds of 8-11, Kyprios found generously on the front end to hold off the determined challenge of Hamish (GB) (Motivator {GB}) and win by less than a length.

Kyprios has gone from strength to strength this season, with his Irish St Leger success coming off the back of top level triumphs in the Gold Cup at Ascot and the Goodwood Cup.

Search For A Song (Ire), a sister of the winner and a former dual Irish St Leger winner herself, ran a gallant race in third to lead home a one-three for Moyglare on an afternoon that the stud celebrated the 50th running of the Moyglare Stud S.

But the day belonged to Kyprios. He may not do anything fancy but his win on Sunday stretched his unbeaten record this season to five and O'Brien hailed him as everything you want in a stayer.

The champion trainer said, “He's very tough. He's very relaxed. He's always only in the gear that you want. Ryan gave him a great ride.

“He's a horse that gets a trip but he's a lot of class and he's very relaxed, which is a massive help. It helps him to get the trip. He's very brave, very clear-winded, good mover and a great mind. It's a pleasure to have him.”

On future plans, O'Brien added, “It'll depend on what everyone will want to do with him and it was great Eva was here to see him today. He's very easy to deal with and it leaves him with a lot of options.

“He was extra lazy today. Maybe it was the soft ground that made him a little bit more laboured. He could go back to a mile and a half but obviously we would love to have him around for the Gold Cup for the coming years. He is a unique horse really.

“We'll see what everybody thinks and what way the ground is going to be (in ParisLongchamp for the Arc). He is only four and for a stayer he's very young. As we saw today, he only does the minimum so it's very hard to know what's in there really.”

Pedigree Notes

Kyprios hails from an outstanding Moyglare family. Polished Gem (Ire) (Danehill), the dam of Kyprios and Search For A Song, has also produced a G1 Prince Of Wales's S. winner in Free Eagle (Ire) as well as five other black-type horses.
