Authorized Colt Leads Closing Session Of Tattersalls October Book 3

Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale came to a close with a strong final session to mirror the resilient trade across Books 1 and 2, and resulted in rises in turnover and median and a clearance rate of 85 percent.

The top lot on the second and final day of Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale came late in the evening when the Authorized colt out of the New Approach mare Sweet Rose was knocked down to Alex Elliot for 90,000 guineas (US$122,068). The sale represented the fifth-highest price over the two days of Book 3.

Consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment, the half-brother to the Listed winner Scentasia was the subject of a prolonged bidding duel between Elliot and Jedd O'Keefe. The colt's granddam White Rose and great granddam Wild Romance were both champion 2-year-olds in Germany.

“Long day waiting for this chap, but worth waiting for him!” exclaimed Elliot. “He is going to go to Ireland for a client, he has got lots of options. He is by a sire that we love, they don't make them in Europe anyway as Authorized is in Turkey. This colt could run next year on the flat – he is a brother to a 106 rated filly – or we can keep him and we can go the National Hunt route.

“He is a beautiful horse, had a great outlook, vetted good, and also has French premiums so the list of options is endless.”

Tate Strikes for Night Of Thunder Colt

The second highest price on the second day of October Book 3 was achieved by the Night Of Thunder colt out of the Rock of Gibraltar mare Moonstone Rock who was knocked down to trainer James Tate for 46,000 guineas (US$62,382) on behalf of Rabbah Bloodstock.

“Obviously Night Of Thunder has done incredibly well so we were looking for his stock,” said Tate. “We thought he was a really lovely example of the stallion and really liked the way he walked around the ring. Fingers crossed he will be a good horse.”

Sean Gollogly with his son, also Sean, bred the April-born first foal who was sold by Eric Cantillon's Plumton Hall Stud.

“I am delighted for the Golloglys,” said Cantillon. “It is a great price. We have had the horse since January when he was weaned and he has always been a nice horse, but the price has surprised us. The stallion has been doing very well and perhaps it was good to be a big fish in a small pond.

“They are small breeders near Epsom and it is great for them, the Golloglys are very good friends.”

Night Of Thunder is the leading second-crop sire in Europe and his first two crops have featured 17 group/listed winners and 26 stakes performers.

Time Test Filly to Nick Bradley Racing

The top-priced filly of the day was a daughter of first crop stallion Time Test out of the Canford Cliffs mare Leap of Joy, who was knocked down to Nick Bradley Racing for 45,000 guineas (US$61,026). She was sold by The Castlebridge Consignment on behalf of breeder Marston Stud.

“She had a Book 1 physical to my mind,” said Bradley, adding: “The 45,000 guineas was more than I wanted to spend and underbidder Federico Barberini is a fair judge, and generally if I am on one then he is on one, and he made me pay! She is a belting physical and she will join Richard Fahey.”

Time Test, who stands at The National Stud in Newmarket, was a two-time Group 2 winner for Roger Charlton and was placed in the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes. He is a son of Dubawi whose sons at stud include the 'hot' young stallions Night of Thunder and New Bay.

“It is all testament to everyone who used Time Test,” said The National Stud's Tim Lane. “We all know what can happen in the spring and coming through to the autumn. He stamps them, they have got the Dubawi middle, great action and very good minds.”

Bradley, who has enjoyed a spectacular year on the racecourse in 2020, has had a busy sales season having bought “20-something” yearlings and commented:

“I have sold nearly all of them already. Everything I bought in Book 2 has sold out, I own 22 fillies and not one colt. My theory is that if I won the Dewhurst, it would have to be by a fashionable stallion then I would want to be selling the horse on and then the owners say 'why are you trying to sell it on?'

“If we won the Cheveley Park or the Fillies' Mile the value will be there all the time, then I won't be in a rush to sell them and the owners can live out their dreams. The GB bonus helps as well – we complain about prize-money but there is twenty grand there for winning a race.”

The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale comes to a conclusion with Book 4 starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17.

This year's Australian Group 2 winner Imaging, purchased at last year's Autumn Horses in Training Sale, provided yet another reminder of why the Juddmonte consignment is an annual highlight of the Autumn Horses in Training Sale and the 25 strong Juddmonte team, which sells on Wednesday, Oct. 28, looks as enticing as ever.

The exciting 3-year-old colt Emissary and high-class older horses Blue Mist, Derevo, and Society Lion, all with a Timeform rating of over 105, look set to attract plenty of attention. The consignment from Ballydoyle Stables also retains its traditional strength and depth with 48 representatives including the group winning quartet of 3-year-olds Cormorant, Nobel Prize, Royal Nornoch, and Royal Lytham amongst 12 group and listed performers.

The largest consignment in the sale is Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum's ever popular Shadwell draft with 87 lots cataloged including 18 horses rated over 95 by Timeform. The Castlebridge Consignment as ever offers a sizeable contingent of 81 with the recent Listed winner Aztec Parade and the highly rated Lord Rapscallion, both trained in Ireland by Johnny Murtagh, set to star. Roger Charlton's promising 3-year-old colt Bullfinch, sold as part of the Waddesdon Stud dispersal with an official rating of 103 and a Timeform rating of 111p, also looks likely to be one of the most eagerly sought after lots.

The largest trainer's consignment is the 69 strong team from Richard Hannon's powerful East Everleigh Stables which includes the 118 Timeform-rated Listed winner Urban Icon who ran a fine race to be beaten only two and a half lengths in the Group 2 Park Stakes at Doncaster on his last start. Mark Johnston's Kingsley Park has 64 catalogued, Richard Fahey's Musley Bank has a team of 46 and Roger Varian's Carlburg Stables and Andrew Balding's Park House Stables each offer 35 lots. Irish trainers including Jim Bolger, Jessie Harrington, John Murphy, Donnacha O'Brien, Joseph O'Brien, Michael O'Callaghan, John Oxx, Fozzy Stack and Dermot Weld are also well-represented.

Commenting on the 2020 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training catalog, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said;

“The unique diversity of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale is the key to its enduring appeal to both domestic and international buyers. Every year the sale produces top-class Flat and National Hunt performers and this year's catalog has all the ingredients to appeal to the customary global audience. We have already seen our live internet and telephone bidding facilities widely embraced, particularly at the recent July and August Sales, and we will continue to explore every possible avenue for buyers to participate at all of our sales despite the prevailing challenges.”

Dream Update For Even So Sister

There may have been relative silence at The Curragh in July when the Ger Lyons-trained Even So (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) won the G1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks, but in the Boland household at Piercetown Stud in Meath the decibels were likely to have hit the high notes.

Eight months previously the stud’s owner Ronnie Boland and his son Aaron had bought a Footstepsinthesand (GB) half-sister to Even So as a foal at Goffs November for €22,000 and the now yearling filly will return to the sales ring with a massive update when she takes up her slot as lot 57 at the Goffs Orby Sale at Doncaster on Sept. 30.

Being a half-sister to a Classic winner is no mean feat in itself; however, the pedigree is far from one dimensional, as the filly’s dam Breeze Hill (Ire) (Danehill) is a half-sister to a brilliant Derby winner in Dr Devious (Ire) who also landed the G1 Irish Champion S. and the G1 Dewhurst S., as well as a champion sprinter in Archway (Ire). One doesn’t have to look too far down the page either to see the likes of G1 Epsom Oaks winner Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), champion 2-year-old Maybe (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the multiple Group 1 and Classic winner Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).

Taking up the story of Irish Oaks day in July, Boland said, “Obviously it was an exciting day and we were delighted to see Even So win. She had already done us a turn when she won a listed race at Naas on her previous run but to go and win the Oaks was something we could only have dreamt about.”

It was more  than just blind luck that lead the Bolands to the foal’s stable last year at Goffs, however, as Ronnie explained: “Myself and Aaron do a bit of work for Ger Lyons; we take horses that are out of training and that need a break and Aaron also works for Ger at the races sometimes. When he saw this filly catalogued in Goffs last year Even So had just won her maiden in Gowran but it wasn’t in the catalogue and Aaron thought she could be capable of developing into a stakes filly this year so it was his decision to buy her.”

Even So went into a lot of people’s notebooks the day she broke her maiden at Gowran last September and when she stretched almost four lengths clear of her rivals in a soft ground maiden over a mile it was a performance that definitely suggested stakes class at the very least with the possibility of ‘could be anything’ when upped further in trip. Although a beaten favourite on her return when third to stablemate Lemista (Ire) (Raven’s Pass) in the G3 Park Express S. at Naas in March, she acquitted herself well on her next start when fifth in the G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas over an inadequate mile, running on strongly at the finish. The Coolmore-owned filly then confirmed her staying power when beating subsequent stakes winner Laburnum (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the Listed Naas Oaks Trial before landing a second Classic in as many months for her trainer Ger Lyons.

“We would have been happy with any bit of stakes form, even to be have been placed in a listed race would have been grand but to get the big one was special,” Boland said. “There was a lot of shouting at the television here in the house and Aaron was actually at The Curragh working for Ger so he was on hand to witness it.”

Responsibility for prepping the yearling for the Orby has been handed over to Boland’s neighbour, Bill Dwan’s The Castlebridge Consignment, and so far things are going according to plan. “She is coming along fine I believe and hopefully on the day that matters she will be looking her best,” Boland said. “There are four Classic winners under the first two dams and it’s a very solid fillies family.”

As well as acting as a relaxation resort for many of Ger Lyons’s squad, Piercetown Stud is also home to a small band of broodmares with G2 Prix de Pomone winner Star Lahib (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) the highest achiever to have emerged from the boutique nursery. Risk Of Thunder (Ire)–not the famous cross country chaser of yesteryear owned by Sean Connery but a 2020 James Tate-trained winning juvenile filly by Night Of Thunder (Ire)–is another flying the flag for the farm.

Boland is breeding winners not only on the track but also on the educational side of the bloodstock business as his son Aaron was awarded the Gold Medal in the Irish National Stud breeding course earlier this year.

“Aaron is actually in England at the moment, he is working for Chasemore Farm doing their yearling prep,” Boland said. “He is going to be in Newmarket at the time of the Orby Sale so unfortunately he won’t be there to see the filly go through the ring. It’s his first real foal pinhook so hopefully he gets on well. He used the proceeds from selling an Awtaad filly foal last year that he bred himself to buy her so fingers crossed his luck will continue.

“It’s a tough game and everything has to go right not only during prep but also getting them to the sales up until they go into the ring. Then you need a few people to like them so it’s far from straightforward, as everyone in the business knows.”
