Jockeys & Jeans Sets Record At Ninth Annual Fundraiser To Benefit PDJF

Early results are in for the ninth annual Jockeys and Jeans fundraiser to benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on June 24: in 2023, the event raised a record of at least $400,000. The previous record was $340,000; raised last year at Churchill Downs. The event brings the total raised by the group to $3.1 million, including the $110,000 raised during the 2022 stallion season sale. Jockeys and Jeans is an all-volunteer group started in late 2014 by five former jockeys.

“It is impossible to sufficiently thank all the staff who at the beginning promised to 'Vegas-Size' the event,” said Jockeys and Jeans President Barry Pearl. “They absolutely did. It was professionally choreographed and staged. From the lighting to the sound effects to the special guests and our speaker, it represented the apex of our development.”

A record of over 300 attended in one of the resort's largest ballrooms with 11 jockeys who suffered career ending injuries and 13 Hall of Fame riders coming separately from behind curtains to take the stage as the Ben Hur theme song heralded their arrival.

An anonymous donor left a check for $50,000. Caesars Entertainment presented a check for $30,000, the Indiana HPBA, led by Director Brian Elmore, contributed $25,000 and Canterbury Park's CEO Randy Sampson accounted for $17,500 in donations.

Tom Reeg, CEO of Caesars Entertainment, personally greeted the Hall of Fame jockeys as well as former riders now in wheelchairs at a party the company sponsored the previous evening. At the event, Reeg spoke of beginning his career in wagering growing up near the former Arlington Park Racetrack where he bet on jockeys Pat Day and Earlie Fires, both Hall of Famers who attended the event.

Famous entrepreneur, philanthropist, horse owner, breeder, bettor and major PDJF donor Jim” Mattress Mack” McIngvale accepted his Person of the Year Award and spoke passionately about jockeys. He termed them “horse racing's stars” and called for their having nationwide Workers Compensation Insurance and for horse owners to finance better injury insurance, retirement benefits and funds for severely injured riders.

“Racing Rachael” McLaughlin kept the event lively as its MC. Attendees included singer/songwriter Clint Holmes and actors Charles Mark Whitefield and Vince Van Patten. Las Vegas local Leonard Eckhaus introduced renowned singer Giada Valenti who sang for the audience, and Louisville Kentucky based comedian Mark Kline provided a set at the event. He was also the live auction auctioneer, where the sales topper was a Churchill Downs donation of a box of six on both the days of 1923 150th Kentucky Oaks and Derby that sold for $17,000.

Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards To Include Canadian Nominations In 2023

The Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards (TIEA) are pleased to announce 1/ST RACING as the sponsor of the Support Services Award for 2023.

Said Jodie Vella-Gregory, Vice President of Industry Relations at 1/ST RACING: “1/ST RACING is honored and excited to be part of this important industry initiative that recognizes the hard-working individuals who are the backbone of our industry.”

The Support Services Award is one of a total of seven categories in which nominations can be made this year.

Another important change to the 2023 TIEA is the opportunity for individuals working in the Canadian Thoroughbred industry to be nominated.

Katie LaMonica, Charities Manager for Godolphin USA, commented: “Following a recent meeting with our partners, the Jockey Club, the HBPA, TOBA and the Breeders' Cup, we felt it appropriate to extend nominations across the border to Canada. While we might be separated by a border, our industries are very much interconnected, and it really does make sense to make this meaningful revision.”

Godolphin sponsors related awards in Great Britain, Ireland, France, and Australia.

Secretariat, Morgan, Steinberg Highlight Summer Season At National Museum Of Racing And Hall Of Fame

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame will present special exhibitions celebrating the 50th anniversary of Secretariat's 1973 Triple Crown and chronicling renowned photographer Bert Morgan's career covering the racing and social scenes at Saratoga. Both exhibits open July 13. A third special exhibition featuring several works by iconic artist Saul Steinberg is already open in the Museum's Link Gallery.

Here is an overview of each exhibit:

A Tremendous Machine: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Secretariat's Triple Crown

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Secretariat's historic 1973 Triple Crown sweep — in which he set records that still stand in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes — the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame presents a special exhibition honoring the accomplishments and enduring legacy of the famed Meadow Stable colt.

A Tremendous Machine: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Secretariat's Triple Crown will be on exhibition in the Peter McBean Gallery, coinciding with opening day at Saratoga Race Course on July 13. The exhibit will feature Secretariat's 1973 Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes, and Triple Crown trophies. A video component will take fans through Secretariat's unique journey through the Triple Crown races, as well as tell the stories of the people who guided the horse through his remarkable career. In addition to the trophies and video components, the exhibit will include an extensive array of artwork, artifacts, photography, and pop culture items. On exhibition July 13 through December 2023

The Summer Place to Be: Bert Morgan's Focus on Saratoga

Bert Morgan was one of the most prominent photographers of thoroughbred racing and American society in the 20th century. He got his start by photographing the racing and social scene at Hialeah Park in Florida. By 1940, Morgan was hired as the official photographer for the tracks in New York (later the New York Racing Association). His son eventually joined him to open Bert and Richard Morgan Studio in 1956. Together they captured some of the most significant moments in thoroughbred racing history.

In 2021, the Museum was fortunate to receive a donation of more than 4,000 photographic negatives by Bert Morgan from Patrick Montgomery. The images in the exhibition highlight the Museum's newly conserved and digitized images of scenes at Saratoga Race Course from the 1930s to the 1980s. On exhibition July 13 through October 2023

At the Races with Saul Steinberg

In 1952, artist Saul Steinberg visited Saratoga Springs on commission from Harper's magazine to provide drawings for an article about the Spa. Though he previously produced a series of drawings of horses and their riders in the 1940s, this visit may have prompted his interest in thoroughbred horse racing.

The drawings featured in this exhibition span a period of four years from 1955 to 1959. Three were published in his book The Labyrinth in 1960. One was later published in the 1963 Sports Illustrated article “Steinberg at the Races” that featured scenes at racetracks from Paris to Los Angeles. On exhibition now through December 2023

Keeneland Fall Meet Stakes Schedule Worth Record $9.05 Million

Keeneland will award a total of $9.05 million – a record for any racing season at the track – for 22 stakes to be run during the 2023 Fall Meet, which covers 17 days from Oct. 6-28. The meet's richest race is the $1 million Coolmore Turf Mile (G1) during the signature Fall Stars Weekend, while Keeneland has added $100,000 to the purse of the Darley Alcibiades (G1) to increase its value to $600,000 and has raised by $50,000 the purse of the $350,000 Franklin (G2), which also was upgraded for 2023.

Keeneland will present 12 stakes on grass and 10 stakes on dirt while offering multiple stakes on six days. The Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund is contributing $1.3 million to Fall Meet stakes purses, pending approval from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

“The strength of the Fall Meet stakes schedule reflects our focus on providing the highest-quality racing for our horsemen and fans,” Keeneland Vice President of Racing Gatewood Bell said. “With these additional increases, all Grade 1 stakes are now worth a minimum of $600,000 apiece; all Grade 2 stakes are $350,000; Grade 3 races are $300,000; and listed stakes are $250,000. We believe these purse levels will attract the best in the sport and make for an exciting fall season of racing.”

The October season opens with Fall Stars Weekend, which features eight stakes that are part of the “Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In.” Winners will earn automatic starting positions and free entry into the 40th Breeders' Cup World Championships on Nov. 3-4 at Santa Anita Park.

Opening day, Oct. 6, will card three stakes, all Win and You're In events: the $600,000 Darley Alcibiades (G1) (NetJets Juvenile Fillies-G1), the $350,000 Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (G2) (Qatar Racing Sprint-G1) and the $350,000 Jessamine (G2) Presented by Keeneland November (Juvenile Fillies Turf-G1).

This marks the first year that Keeneland's November Breeding Stock Sale is sponsoring the Jessamine for 2-year-old fillies. The November Sale begins Nov. 7.

Joining the Coolmore Turf Mile (FanDuel Mile-G1) as Win and You're In races on opening Saturday, Oct. 7 are the $600,000 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) (FanDuel Juvenile-G1) and the $350,000 Thoroughbred Club of America (G2) (PNC Bank Filly and Mare Sprint-G1).

This marks the 10th year the historic Breeders' Futurity has been sponsored by Claiborne Farm.

Other stakes on the first Saturday of the meet are the $750,000 First Lady (G1) Presented by UK HealthCare and the $350,000 Woodford (G2) Presented by FanDuel. Both races are expected to attract Breeders' Cup hopefuls.

Sunday of Fall Stars Weekend has three Win and You're In races: the $600,000 Juddmonte Spinster (G1) (Distaff-G1), the $350,000 Castle & Key Bourbon (G2) (Juvenile Turf-G1) and the $250,000 Indian Summer (L) Presented by Keeneland Select.

On the second week of the Fall Meet, Keeneland will run the $300,000 Sycamore (G3) on Friday, Oct. 13; the $600,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1) Presented by Dixiana on Saturday, Oct. 14; and the $350,000 Franklin (G2) on Sunday, Oct. 15.

This marks the 40th running of the Queen Elizabeth II Presented by Dixiana, an internationally recognized invitational for 3-year-old fillies racing 1 1/8 miles on the turf. The stakes was inaugurated during the 1984 Fall Meet in honor of Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Keeneland.

Stakes action resumes the next Saturday, Oct 21 with the $350,000 Lexus Raven Run (G2) and the $250,000 Perryville (L), which are followed by the $300,000 Rood & Riddle Dowager (G3) on Sunday, Oct. 22.

The Fall Meet will conclude with two multiple stakes days beginning with the $300,000 Valley View (G3) and the $200,000 Myrtlewood on Friday, Oct. 27. Beginning this season, the Valley View will be run at 1 mile.

Closing day will feature the $350,000 Hagyard Fayette (G2), the $300,000 Bryan Station (G3) and the $200,000 Bowman Mill.
