Average Daily Handle Up Nearly 10 Percent At Belmont Spring/Summer Meet

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) has announced that the recently concluded Belmont Park spring/summer meet generated $14,746,421 in average daily handle, a 9.7 percent increase over 2022.

Originally scheduled for 40 days of live racing, NYRA was forced to cancel two cards due to poor air quality caused by wildfires in Canada. All-sources handle for the 38-day spring/summer meet totaled $560,363,986, which compares to $591,250,409 in 2022 when the meet was contested over 44 days.

The blockbuster June 10 Belmont Stakes Day card, highlighted by Arcangelo's victory in the 155th running of the Grade 1, $1.5 million Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets, generated all-sources handle of $118,283,455, a NYRA record for a non-Triple Crown year.

Average field size for the 368 races run during the 2023 spring/summer meet was 7.60, a 3.4 percent increase over 2022 when average field size was 7.35. Of the 368 races held during the spring/summer meet, 187 were on the main track and 181 on the turf. Fourteen races were forced off the turf due to rain.

Highlighted by the 154th edition of the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers on August 26 and the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney on August 5, the 2023 summer meet at historic Saratoga Race Course will continue through Monday, September 4.

Saratoga Live will present daily coverage and analysis of the summer meet on the networks of FOX Sports. For the complete broadcast schedule, visit NYRA.com/SaratogaLive.

Del Mar’s Opening Day Program Sold Out; Limited Tickets Available For Remainder Of Weekend

All available tickets for Del Mar's celebrated opening day program on Friday, July 21 have been sold, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club announced today. However, limited tickets remain available for Opening Weekend — July 22 and 23 – as well as throughout the summer season.

Celebrating Del Mar's opening day is a local tradition in the greater San Diego area with big crowds taking in world-class racing and hospitality. In order to optimize the patron experience, the track limited ticket sales for opening day again this year based largely on positive feedback from fans after a similar measure was put in place for the past two summers' opening day programs and for the two recent Breeders' Cup World Championships held at the seaside facility.

“This will be the third year we've capped attendance on Opening Day and the feedback we have received from our fans over this time has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Del Mar chief executive officer Joe Harper. “A sell-out crowd where everyone has easier access to wagering, food and beverage and other amenities is the right way to get our 84th racing season off to a strong start. We're excited by the level of fan interest and we're looking forward to the start of the summer meet.”

Reserved seating and admission for the Saturday and Sunday programs of Opening Weekend (along with the remainder of the eight-week season) are available at dmtc.com/tickets.

First post for all three days of Opening Weekend will be 2 p.m.

Standardbred Trainer Carol Voyer Fined $11,000, Suspended Three Years Over Suspicious Death Of Racehorse

In order to protect the integrity of horse racing in Ontario and prioritize the wellbeing and safety of racehorses, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has issued monetary penalties totaling $11,000 and a three-year suspension to a Standardbred trainer.

Following an AGCO inspection into the suspicious death of racehorse Cams Lucky Sam, trained by Carol Voyer of Puslinch Ontario, there are reasonable grounds to believe Voyer has violated multiple Rules of Standardbred Racing. The violations include committing an act of neglect, providing misleading information regarding the whereabouts of the horse, engaging in conduct not in the best interest of racing, and failing to report the death of the racehorse to the AGCO.

In addition to the monetary penalties, Voyer has been fully suspended for three years, from July 19, 2023 to July 18, 2026.

A licensed horse racing participant issued a Ruling under the Rules of Racing has the right to appeal the AGCO's action to the Horse Racing Appeal Panel (HRAP) which is an independent adjudicative body mandated to hear appeals of decisions.

“The AGCO will continue to hold those who fail to follow regulations accountable for their actions, especially when it involves the well-being of  racehorses,” said Tom Mungham, Chief Executive Officer and Registrar of the AGCO. “The AGCO's paramount interest lies in safeguarding the health and welfare of racehorses, protecting the safety of individuals, and maintaining the integrity of racing as a whole.”

Rule Violations

The AGCO has taken these regulatory actions for violations of the following rules:

Rules of Standardbred Racing
Rule 6.27
Rules 6.47.01(a) and 6.47.07(a)(b)
Rules 6.20(a)(b)(c) and 6.22

The Role of the AGCO

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) acts in the public interest to govern, direct, control and regulate horse racing in all its forms in Ontario, the operation of racetracks and the licensing of racetracks and racing participants.

Ellis Park To Host ‘Rein In Breast Cancer’ Event Saturday

Ellis Park Racing & Gaming will celebrate Breast Cancer Survivors on Saturday with its annual Horses and Hope Day at the races.

Race fans are encouraged to visit the Pink Tent located on the track apron to learn about cancer prevention and screening resources. A limited number of free gifts will be available to cancer survivors. Horses and Hope will also have merchandise available for purchase.

“We want to send a message to all cancer survivors, especially our patrons, our community and our very own team members that no one fights alone,” Ellis Park General Manager Matt Pressley said. “Ellis Park is all about community and family and this is a great opportunity to celebrate and spend the day with friends and family.”

Horses and Hope is a project started by former First Lady Jane Beshear and the Kentucky Cancer Program. Their mission is to reach men and women throughout Kentucky to increase cancer screening, especially among Kentucky's horse industry workers and their families.

Ellis Park will have a giveaway for the first 50 survivors through the main gate on Saturday, as well as the opportunity for survivors to enter a drawing for one of three self-care packages generously donated by Massage Therapy by Cherie Williamson LMT and Sixth and Zero.

Race fans are encouraged to “chalk the walk” between the terrace and paddock tents in honor of their loved ones and to wear pink to the races to create a brightly colored sea of support.

Horses and Hope will also have their one-of-a-kind pink Ford Mustang available for fans to take photos. The unique car was used as the pace car in a 2011 NASCAR Cup Series race.

The first of nine races will get underway at 11:45 a.m. (CDT) For more information about racing and gaming from Ellis Park, visit www.ellisparkracing.com.
