Blue Grass Farms Charities To Postpone Annual Fundraising Event

Due to Covid-19 causing many events to cancel, the Board of Directors for Blue Grass Farms Charities (BGFC) has made the difficult decision to postpone the upcoming “Monster Bash” Masquerade Ball.

The charity's annual fundraising event was scheduled for October 30, 2020 at Limestone Hall in downtown Lexington.

The online auction portion of the annual Fall fundraiser will still occur. While the exact date for the auction is yet to be determined, the charity is working to gather rare and unique items to offer up for bid.

“Creativity is the key word in fundraising this year,” states Julie Berry, Executive Director. “We began our 'Gallop and Graze' campaign for the next six months to raise funds to offset benevolent costs the charity is incurring due to the pandemic. Plans are being made for the online auction to take place sometime this Fall. Our auction committee members are working diligently to find unique objects to bid on that will not only be exciting but hard-to-find items, as well.”

Kentucky Downs To Open New Historical Horse Racing Hall In September

Kentucky Downs is betting big with the opening of a new 30,000 square-foot historical horse racing (HHR) gaming hall in early September—just in time for its famous live horse racing meet.

The Mint Gaming Hall at Kentucky Downs will add more than 600 all-new historical horse racing terminals and other amenities that will include a new multi-media Center Bar with an adjacent entertainment stage and a new high-limit betting area. Guests can also join the brand-new Mint Rewards loyalty program that will offer players more benefits, bonuses and recognition, including complimentary food and beverage and tickets to partner events.

The addition of The Mint Gaming Hall is the first of a multi-phase expansion and growth plan that began last year under Kentucky Downs' new ownership. Kentucky Downs was sold in March 2019 to a new partnership headed by prominent horseman and entrepreneur Ron Winchell and well-known gaming and investment-banking executive Marc Falcone. Upon completion of the entire project in early 2021, Kentucky Downs will offer a total of approximately 1,100 HHR games in the 110,000 square-foot facility that will include several new restaurant and dining options and other additional amenities.

“We are looking forward to being bigger and better than ever in September, while remaining focused on current safety protocols for the safety and health of our guests and team,” said Ted Nicholson, Kentucky Downs' senior vice president and general manager. “We are always seeking ways to enhance the guest experience and can't wait to provide more food and beverage offerings, more live music and more entertainment.”

The multi-phase expansion is expected to add more than 75 new jobs with positions in food and beverage, housekeeping, security, gaming technology and marketing. In 2019, Kentucky Downs provided more than $20 million in state/local taxes, wages and benefits and charitable contributions to local Kentucky and Tennessee communities.

“Our growth continues to solidify Kentucky Downs' role as an economic engine for the Franklin-Simpson area and beyond as both an attraction and an employer,” Nicholson said.

Ireland: Statistics For First Half Of 2020 Illustrate ‘Devastating’ Financial Impact Of COVID-19

Six-month statistics for horse racing and breeding in Ireland, released last week by Horse Racing Ireland (HRI), illustrate the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the industry.

A total of 87 fixtures were lost in Ireland from March to June during the Covid-19 lockdown. Racing resumed behind closed doors on June 8 with strict protocols designed to ensure race fixtures could be run in a safe and controlled manner. Only key personnel who have completed medical screening and thermal checks are permitted on track.

Those lost race meetings – allied with the current scenario of no public attendance at all fixtures held behind closed doors – have decimated attendance figures for the first six months of the year, down almost 80 percent.

The bloodstock sales in the first half of 2020 experienced severe interruption, with sales either deferred or moved out of Ireland. Sales of Thoroughbreds at auction in Ireland for the first six months is down 87.3 percent year-on-year.

The number of active owners during the first six months (i.e. those making an entry) was down by 13.9 percent. Since the resumption of racing, there has been an upturn in the number of horses returned in training.

The number returned at any point during the first six months was down 1.6 percent compared with 2019, having been up by 9.1 percent on March 24 when racing ceased, while the number of horses-in-training at the end of June was up 6.8 percent year-on-year, reflecting the resumption of a full race program under both codes.

With no racing attendances since early March, betting with on-course bookmakers and the Tote was down 73.9 percent. In April, Horse Racing Ireland announced a strategic alliance between Tote Ireland and the UK Tote Group which from early next month will provide bigger pools and a single online betting pool for Irish and UK Tote customers.

Business update from HRI Chief Executive, Brian Kavanagh:

“2020 has been a devastating year for the country and like many other sectors, the horse racing and breeding industry has suffered greatly having effectively come to a standstill on March 24. Against that background, any comparison with previous years is futile. Nevertheless, a few key points are worth highlighting.

“The absence of attendances is having a devastating impact on racecourses and the businesses that depend on them such as on-course bookmakers, Tote, caterers and so on. Horse Racing Ireland and the racecourses are working to develop methods by which attendance can return once deemed appropriate by the Government. This is challenging and the contribution to the industry by the racecourses in continuing to race behind closed doors since June 8 is commendable.

“While traditionally the quieter part of the year, bloodstock sales figures for the first half of 2020 were decimated. The sales companies have shown flexibility with regard to their dates and HRI is working with them and Government to ensure that sales can safely resume in Ireland in August. The equivalent sales of those scheduled to be held between now and the end of the year generated €150m in turnover for Irish breeders in 2019, much of it to overseas buyers.

“With the support of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, horse breeding and training were able to continue safely during the period of restrictions and owners have shown great loyalty with just a small drop in the number of horses in training. HRI is committed to restoring as many of the lost opportunities as possible and has previously announced revised fixtures and race programmes for the rest of the year which will provide opportunities for horses at all levels. I would like to acknowledge the contribution of owners, both domestic and international, in retaining their horses in training which has protected employment and economic activity in rural Ireland.

“Horse Racing Ireland welcomes the strong commitment to develop the industry over the coming years contained in the recently published Programme for Government, particularly in the context of the challenges provided by Covid-19 and Brexit. The racing and breeding industry is one which will contribute to the economic recovery, generating employment and a significant level of international investment into the Irish rural economy. Horse Racing Ireland is working with all elements of the industry to mitigate the impact of the current crisis, however, the challenges facing many participants are significant.”

Los Alamitos Given Green Light After New Plan For Equine, Rider Safety Praised By Board

At the end of a ten-day period of probation of its license due to concerns about equine fatalities, Los Alamitos received unanimous support from the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) Monday to continue running its meet.

A petition filed by CHRB executive director Scott Chaney triggered an emergency meeting of the board ten days ago to discuss a recent cluster of deaths — both exercise-related and non-exercise-related — at the track. Following that emergency meeting, the track has seen two more equine fatalities. Since then, Los Alamitos officials submitted a plan to commissioners, outlining their plans to increase surveillance and further restrict medication use on the backstretch in order to reduce risk to horse and rider.

The plan sets up an entry review panel comprised of an entry steward, track management representative, and a veterinarian to scratch any horses they feel “unsuitable for any reason of horse and/or rider safety.” That panel, which was enacted for last week's racing, has already scratched five horses.

In addition to CHRB-mandated necropsy reviews that already take place following a racing or training death, the track will now require its own assessment process that will include the horse's veterinarian and trainer for all deaths, not just those related to exercise. Trainers with two equine deaths in a year on the Los Alamitos grounds which are not racing or training-related will undergo a review process and could see their participation privileges at the track revoked. More personnel will be observing morning training at the track, and patrolling the backstretch with the latitude to question handlers and veterinarians about procedures they observe at the barn.

Dr. Rebecca Fitzgerald, track veterinarian, said that initial set-up of these procedures, particularly the entry review board, have already been tremendously helpful. Fitzgerald said she has also taken on the task of conducting exams on horses the day after a race to make sure they came out of it well.

The new plan places restrictions on age and workout experience for first-time starters (Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse) and also prohibits intra-articular injection within 14 days of a race, and intra-articular cortisone within 30 days of a race. Trainers are also prohibited from entering horses that have had two intra-articular cortisone injections within the previous 60 days. Dr. Rick Arthur, CHRB equine medial director, pointed out that three of the last four fatalities would have been barred from entry if the new intra-articular injection rules had been in place earlier.

“I can assure you all that we're kind of humiliated by this whole thing,” said Dr. Ed Allred, owner of Los Alamitos. “I think a lot of it just sort of happened. Things happen in clusters sometimes; we've said that before. We're going to do all we can, everything we possibly can, to do things properly in the future. Some of our people, our trainers will be a little upset by it, but they will adjust to it.”

“You made the comment about some of the trainers are not going to like it and all that — too bad,” said CHRB commissioner Dennis Alfieri. “They shouldn't be training. A lot of trainers that call themselves 'trainers' and they're not trainers. They have one or two horses, they bring them in, they race them … that's what's always made me uneasy with this whole industry, is people who call themselves trainers who shouldn't be training horses. These trainers that don't want to step up and raise their own bar should be out.”

Representatives from the Thoroughbred Owners of California, California Thoroughbred Trainers, and Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association all spoke up in favor of the new plan.

Although commissioners were generally appreciative of the work Allred and his team put into the plan, commissioner Wendy Mitchell said she hesitated to be too congratulatory toward the industry.

“I really appreciate that people put together this plan and plan on implementing it; I wish we weren't in this situation in the first place,” said Mitchell. “This is the first time we've used this regulation and I was not satisfied with the response at our hearing last week. I think that patting everyone on the back at this point isn't really appropriate … we want to give the track the backbone and knowing they have the support of the CHRB to crack down. While I appreciate the plan, let's keep it in perspective — we're in this situation, which is not a good situation.”

Los Alamitos is scheduled to conduct nighttime Quarter Horse races through late December. Allred and Fitzgerald reassured the board these new protocols will remain in place on a long-term basis. See the complete plan, along with public comments offered before the meeting, here.
