TVG To Be Live On Site For ‘Win And You’re In’ Races At Del Mar

TVG, America's horse racing network, will be live on site this weekend at Del Mar covering a loaded weekend of racing that includes two Breeders' Cup Challenge Series “Win and You're In” races – the $250,0000 Bing Crosby Stakes (GI) and the $250,000 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (GI) as well as the $100,000 Shared Belief Stakes which will serve as a prep race for the Kentucky Derby (GI) in September.

There will be expert analysis and exclusive interviews on-site by Todd Schrupp, Mike Joyce, Christina Blacker, and Joaquin Jamie while Simon Bray will be contributing to the broadcast remotely from home.

The winner of Saturday's $250,000 Bing Crosby Stakes (GI) will earn an automatic berth into the Breeders Cup Sprint (GI). The six-furlong contest was reduced to a field of nine when multiple Grade 1 winner McKinzie was an early scratch. The remaining contenders include the East Coast invader Lexitonian for trainer Jack Sisterson. The graded stakes winner will have Drayden Van Dyke in the irons. On Sunday, fillies and mares will take center stage in the $250,000 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes with a spot in the starting gate in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) at stake. The 2020 Breeders' Cup will be held November 6-7 at Keeneland.

Also on Saturday at Del Mar, the track will host a prep race for September's Kentucky Derby (GI) – the $100,000 Shared Belief Stakes. Carded at a mile and a sixteenth, the race has drawn a field of six contenders including Honor A.P. who will face off against a trio of challengers for trainer Bob Baffert. Honor A.P., trained by John Shirreffs, was last seen winning the Runhappy Santa Anita Derby (GI) in June. Mike Smith will be aboard.

Fans of international racing can tune in to TVG on Friday and Saturday morning to watch racing from Goodwood Racecourse in England. On Friday, the veteran Battaash (IRE) will attempt to win the King George Qatar Stakes (G2) for the fourth consecutive year. The six-year-old gelding is a multiple Group 1 winner and was last seen winning the King's Stand Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot. Coverage begins at 5:00 a.m. PT/8:00 a.m. ET on Friday and 5:30 a.m. PT/8:30 a.m. ET on Saturday.

TVG will also be live on site at Ellis Park on Sunday with analysis and interviews from Scott Hazelton and Gabby Gaudet. In addition to Del Mar and Ellis Park, TVG will also be broadcasting racing from Gulfstream Park, Laurel Park, Monmouth Park and more all weekend.

Mojica Handed 30-Day Suspension By Indiana Stewards For Careless Riding

Jockey Orlando Mojica has been suspended 30 days by stewards in Indiana for careless riding after a July 22 race where his mount suffered a fatal injury.

According to the ruling issued July 23, stewards reviewed video of he third race at Indiana Grand and found that Mojica twice “carelessly and recklessly steered his mount, Miss Mercken, into unacceptably tight quarters, needlessly endangering his mount, himself, and the other race participants.”

On video replay, Mojica and Miss Mercken can be seen at the back of the five-horse field sitting in the two path coming into the stretch. The pair appear to approach closely alongside behind eventual winner Strollin the Bayou when Miss Mercken clips heels with Strollin the Bayou and suffers a rotational fall.

According to the official Equibase chart, Miss Mercken was vanned off and according to the ruling was later euthanized. Mojica was unseated but returned to the jockeys' room under his own power and later completed riding engagements in the fifth and sixth races.

Mojica, who has been riding since 2000, has appealed the ruling. Officials with the Indiana Horse Racing Commission told the Paulick Report he requested a stay of suspension, which has been denied. The suspension began July 29 and according to the ruling is set to run through Aug. 27.

Last month, Indiana stewards suspended rider Gabriel Saez for 30 days for an incident that resulted in three riders falling, two with injuries. He was later granted an exemption to allow him to ride in out-of-state stakes races, provided he add one day of in-state suspension for each stakes.

Del Mar Will Increase Purses By 10 Percent, Add Stakes Race Back To Calendar

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club announced Thursday a 10 percent purse increase after a solid opening span of racing days during the month of July. The increase will be retroactive back to the track's first day, July 10.

Del Mar also announced the addition of a stakes race to its calendar – the $75,000 Del Mar Juvenile Filly Turf, a one-mile spin on the grass for 2-year-old fillies that will be held on Sunday, Sept. 6. The race had been a regular feature here the previous eight years, but had been dropped from the original stakes schedule due to belt tightening measures.

Between July 10 and July 27 Del Mar conducted seven days of racing and — though it has not had fans on board any of those days as a safety measure tied to the coronavirus pandemic — it saw wagering amounting to $133,841,412 flow from its online and satellite services, an increase of more than 5 percent over similar dates last year.

“Our horsemen have been terrific and our customers have responded very positively to what we're presenting,” said Tom Robbins, Del Mar's executive vice president for racing. “We've been running either 11- or 10-race cards and our field size is up to 8.6 in the early going. We're very pleased to offer this purse boost in conjunction with how the meet has unfolded so far.”

Last summer the track's average field size finished at 8.0 per race.

Del Mar's summer season is scheduled through Labor Day Monday, September 7 with racing on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

However, in response to the cancellation of racing on its second week, the track added Monday racing on July 27 with a 10-race card that drew a solid $11.6 million in wagers. Del Mar officials have indicated that they plan to make up their second and third missing days from week two with an added race day and additional races on scheduled cards.

“We are pleased to announce this well-deserved purse increase to the horsemen and women competing at Del Mar,” said Thoroughbred of Owners of California chairman Nick Alexander. “It is very encouraging to see the positive response at the entry box and from bettors on Del Mar's races. We look forward to continuing to partner with management on another world-class race meet at Del Mar.”

The track returns to action Friday with six stakes races planned over the three-day weekend. Among the upcoming highlights are the Grade I, $250,000 Bing Crosby Stakes at six furlongs and the $100,000 Shared Belief Stakes at a mile and one-sixteenth for 3-year-olds, both this Saturday. The Shared Belief will be the first time the track has offered a “points” race for the Kentucky Derby, which this year has been shifted from the first Saturday in May to the first Saturday in September.

Additionally, this forthcoming weekend will offer the foremost race at the stand for older fillies and mares, the Grade I, $250,000 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes on Sunday.

First post on all days throughout the meeting is 2 p.m.

Remington: 2020 Stakes Schedule To See Purse Reduction Of $820,000

The 2020 Remington Park Thoroughbred Season is set to begin a 67-date run on Friday, Aug. 21. The 32-race stakes schedule will also start on opening night with the $75,000 Governor's Cup, for older runners at 1-1/8 miles, serving as the feature.

The total purse money for the stakes schedule is $2,880,000, a reduction of $820,000 from the 2019 stakes. The lower structure is due to two-months of inactivity from mid-March to late-May this spring when Remington Park halted simulcast racing and casino gaming for health and safety measures at the height of Covid-19.

Remington Park's lone graded events top the billing for Oklahoma Derby Day on Sunday, Sept. 27. The Grade 3, $200,000 Oklahoma Derby and the Grade 3, $100,000 Remington Park Oaks head the lineup of eight stakes races on one of just two Sunday afternoon programs this season. Won in 2019 by Owendale, the Oklahoma Derby shares richest race honors at Remington Park. The Springboard Mile, the track's top event for 2-year-olds, also carries a $200,000 purse.

The marquee night for state-breds falls on Friday, Oct. 16 with the annual Oklahoma Classics. The series of divisional stakes races, worth more than $1,000,000, for Oklahoma-breds has been contested every year since 1993. The $175,000 Classics Cup tops the night and for the first time since 2016 will be won by a horse not named Shotgun Kowboy. A record-holding four-time winner of the Cup, millionaire Shotgun Kowboy has been retired to the farm of his breeder-owner-trainer, C.R. Trout, in Edmond, Okla.

The Springboard Mile leads a loaded afternoon of stakes racing on the final day of the season, Sunday, Dec. 20. The Springboard carries valuable qualifying points for the 2021 Kentucky Derby and has drawn quality fields, sending runners into the two most recent “Runs for the Roses” in 2018 (Combatant) and 2019 (Long Range Toddy).

The Remington Park turf course will be ready for action from opening night into November. There are seven stakes races slated over the grass with the $60,000 Remington Green and the $60,000 Ricks Memorial as the top open stakes races, both on the undercard on Oklahoma Derby Day. A pair of events on Oklahoma Classics night share the honors for richest turf stakes this season with the OKC Turf Classic and the Classics Distaff Turf both checking in at $130,000.

A total of 16 stakes are slated for Oklahoma-bred runners, beginning with a trio of events for state-breds over turf on Friday, Sept. 25. The Red Earth Stakes, the Bob Barry Memorial and the Remington Park Turf Sprint, all worth $70,000, start the run for Oklahoma-breds. The Jim Thorpe Stakes and Useeit Stakes, also worth $70,000, wrap up the state-bred stakes on the Springboard Mile undercard, Dec. 20.
