Iowa: Third-Party Veterinarian Fined For Late Administration, Fudging Lasix Paperwork

Veterinarian Dr. Rozann Stay has been fined a total of $1,500 for “failure to conduct her business in a proper manner” at Prairie Meadows Racetrack in Altoona, Ia., according to a pair of rulings from the Board of Stewards.

Stay is a third-party veterinarian responsible for administering Lasix to horses entered to race on the diuretic medication. On July 15, 2023, Stay did not give Lasix to “Let's Rock N Roll,” entered in that day's 10th race, in time, before the four-hour deadline prior to post time. The horse did receive the medication, but it was too late for Let's Rock N Roll to be allowed to run, so the horse was scratched by the stewards.

Let's Rock N Roll is trained by breeder and co-owner Dalton Dieter.

Stay was fined $500 for the late administration of Lasix, and another $1,000 for turning paperwork in to the commission which incorrectly identified Let's Rock N Roll as a “no-Lasix” horse. Stay later turned in paperwork stating Let's Rock N Roll had been given Lasix in a timely manner, but admitted to the stewards that the horse had been given the medication after the deadline.

The second ruling concludes: “The board notes that this is Rozann Stay, DVM's second violation during the 2023 Prairie Meadows season and any other similar violation may result in revocation of her IRGC license.”

Canterbury Park Boosts Purses For Two State-Bred Stakes Races On Aug. 12

Purse increases for the Wally's Choice Stakes and Glitter Star Stakes, both to be run Saturday, Aug. 12, were announced today by the Canterbury Park racing office. Both stakes will now offer $65,000 purses, an increase of $15,000 each. The additional purse money was a result of a sponsorship obtained by the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association with JTR Roofing, Inc. of Lake Elmo, Minn., American Roofing Supply and CertainTeed Corporation.

“JTR Roofing is proud to be a sponsor of these state-bred races and to support the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association,” Dan Strohkirch, sales manager for JTR Roofing, Inc., said. “I've been involved in horse racing my entire life and have been a promoter of thoroughbred breeding in Minnesota. This sponsorship is a way of giving back to the industry that is so important to our state.” Strohkirch's father Dennis started a breeding operation in 1983 at his farm in Grant, Minn. and has stood several stallions over the last four decades along with a broodmare band.

Both races are conducted at the distance of the 1 1/16 miles on the main track. The Wally's Choice is restricted to 3-year-old and older Minnesota-bred horses while the Glitter Star is for 3-year-old and older state-bred fillies and mares.

“The MTA appreciates the support of JTR Roofing, American Roofing Supply and CertainTeed,” MTA Executive Director Kay King said. “This is an exciting addition to the purses for these stakes. Breeders and owners work hard to bring horses to this point in their racing careers. It's great to see them be rewarded by companies that are willing to invest in our Minnesota-bred bred equine industry.”

Aug. 12 is made in Minnesota Night at the Shakopee, Minn. racetrack and will also feature the $100,000 Minnesota Derby and $100,000 Minnesota Oaks for state-breds at a distance of one mile and seventy yards. First post is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. CT.

The Minnesota Thoroughbred Association was incorporated in 1971 with a mission to promote, educate and support thoroughbred breeding, ownership, and racing in the state.

PDJF Awareness Day At Saratoga To Feature Jockey Trading Cards Fund-Raiser

The New York Racing Association Inc. will pay tribute to the distinguished jockey colony at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday while also raising funds for their cause with the launch and sale of jockey trading cards on Permanently Disabled Jockeys' Fund (PDJF) Awareness Day.

In recognition of the nonprofit organization's fundraising awareness day, which is observed annually at race tracks across the U.S., fans will be given the opportunity to purchase a five-pack of jockey trading cards for $5, with a limit of three packs per person. Similar in design to baseball trading cards, the limited edition cards will feature 20 of Saratoga's active and most popular jockeys.

Many of the jockeys represented on the trading cards will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (ET) for an autograph signing on the Jockey Silks Porch. Suggested donations are encouraged to support the PDJF.

“Saturday, July 29 is Permanently Disabled Jockeys' Fund Day across America and a day we also recognize The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a critical piece of legislation for all Americans with disabilities,” said PDJF Board President Nancy LaSala. “On this day, the PDJF invites all racetracks conducting horse racing contests to coordinate with their local jockey colony to hold fund-raisers and create awareness about how important this day is. We are grateful to NYRA for creating this collector series of trading cards and making them available to fans for a modest donation to the PDJF.”

The trading cards will feature Hall of Fame inductees Javier Castellano and John R. Velazquez. Other jockeys include Junior Alvarado, Eric Cancel, Kendrick Carmouche, Dylan Davis, Jacqueline A. Davis, Manuel Franco, Tyler Gaffalione, Florent Geroux, Julien R. Leparoux, Jose Lezcano; Katie Davis McCarthy, Trevor McCarthy, Irad Ortiz Jr., Jose L. Ortiz, Flavien Prat, Joel Rosario, Luis Saez, and Ricardo Santana Jr.

There are 4,500 total packs available for purchase with all proceeds to be donated to the PDJF. Jockey cards are randomly sorted in each pack and feature the jockey's picture and home country flag on the front and personal details and racing statistics on the back. Representatives from PDJF will be on site collecting donations and selling the jockey trading card sets inside Gate A near the Taste NY Pavilion beginning at 11 a.m. until supplies last.

The PDJF provides assistance to former jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries. Since its founding in 2006, the fund has disbursed approximately $13 million to permanently disabled jockeys, most of whom have sustained paralysis or brain injuries, according to pdjf.org.

Saturday's feature on PDJF Day is the $500,000 Jim Dandy, (G2) the annual 1 1/8-mile prep for the $1.25-million Travers (G1) on August 26. The afternoon will also include the $350,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G1), a six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and older.

Trainer McLean Robertson Reinstated After Split Sample Fails To Confirm Banned Drug Finding

A provisional suspension of trainer McLean “Mac” Robertson following a reported positive test for the banned substance altrenogest  abruptly ended July 22 when the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority and its testing and enforcement arm, the Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit, said altrenogest was not detected in a split sample.

Testing of the original sample and the split sample was conducted by laboratories contracted by HIWU.

Altrenogest, approved for use in fillies and mares to suppress estrus and sold under the brand name Regu-Mate, reportedly was detected in the gelding Johnny Up following a June 4 victory in a $7,500 claiming race at Canterbury Park, where he's been a member of the Minnesota track's Hall of Fame since 2011.

Because altrenogest is listed as a banned substance for male horses under HISA/HIWU rules, the positive triggered an automatic provisional suspension of Robertson pending  confirmation of the drug in the split sample. Robertson was required to transfer the 70 horses under his care to someone not currently affiliated with his stable during the provisional suspension. Robertson's most recent start was July 2.

Nathaniel Quinonez, a one-time Robertson employee who started 49 horses in his own name from 2016 through May 4, 2023, took over the stable. Quinonez has won eight races from 26 starts at Canterbury and Delaware Park since Robertson was forced to the sidelines, including two stakes on Canterbury's Hall of Fame day July 15.

A joint statement from HISA/HIWU said the notice of the potential anti-doping violation has been withdrawn and the case has been closed.

Johnny Up's win has been reinstated.
