Thoroughbred Owner Conference’s Virtual Series Kicks Off March 2

Registrations are still being accepted for the seventh Thoroughbred Owner Conference, which kicks off Tuesday, March 2, at 2 p.m. ET as the first of a series of 10 virtual panels that will be held on the first Tuesday of every month for the duration of the year. The 2021 conference series is hosted by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and presented by Bessemer Trust, Dean Dorton Equine, Stoll Keenon Ogden, and Stonestreet Farm.

The first panel, “The Economics of Racehorse Ownership,” is sponsored by Keeneland and will delve into accounting, tax, legal, and insurance considerations associated with racehorse ownership. It will also include information on the costs of ownership, the fundamentals of running a racing stable, and owner responsibility for aftercare.

Moderated by horse racing television analyst Caton Bredar, the panel will consist of owners George Bolton and Maggi Moss; Sarah Reeves, attorney and member, Stoll Keenon Ogden; and Jen Shah, tax director, Dean Dorton.

“With more than 650 guests already registered for the virtual Thoroughbred Owner Conference series, we are excited to kick it off with an expert group of panelists that will provide invaluable information for new and veteran owners alike,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView. “While we will be posting replays of every session, we encourage those interested in the series to register in advance to get the best experience and to be able to ask questions in real time that will be addressed at the end of each panel.”

OwnerView is a joint effort spearheaded by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association to encourage ownership of Thoroughbreds and provide accurate information on aspects of ownership such as trainers, public racing syndicates, the process of purchasing and owning a Thoroughbred, racehorse retirement, and owner licensing.

The need for a central resource to encourage Thoroughbred ownership was identified in the comprehensive economic study of the sport that was commissioned by The Jockey Club and conducted by McKinsey & Company in 2011. The OwnerView site was launched in May 2012.

Report: Irad Ortiz Jr. Fined $1,000 For Punching Paco Lopez

Daily Racing Form's Mike Welsch reports that Gulfstream Park stewards have fined Irad Ortiz Jr. $1,000 and placed Ortiz and fellow jockey Paco Lopez on probation for the remainder of the championship meet following a fight between the two men after the fourth race on Feb. 26 at the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track.

Known Agenda scored an 11-length victory as the 1-2 favorite with Ortiz aboard in the allowance optional claiming race. Lopez finished second aboard Top Gun Tommy and claimed foul against Ortiz for an incident at the top of the stretch.

The two horses raced as a team into the stretch, with Known Agenda to the outside.Top Gun Tommy suddenly steadied and swung to the outside straightening into the stretch and apparently brushed the hindquarters of Known Agenda (see video below). The official Equibase chart says Known Agenda “took over outside Top Gun Tommy, getting his hind end brushed by the latter at the top of the stretch.”

As the horses came back to be unsaddled and the claim of foul announced, Ortiz could be seen yelling at Lopez. A few minutes later, while Lopez was seated in a chair, Ortiz threw several punches at him. It was quickly broken up but caught on video.

Stewards opted to allow the original order of finish to stand.

Gulfstream Boosts Overnight Purses 10 Percent Beginning March 3

Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. announced Friday that it will increase all overnight purses 10 percent effective Wednesday, March 3.

Mike Lakow, Gulfstream's Vice President of Racing, said the increase is due to the quality of the live program throughout the Championship Meet.

“We are pleased to be in a position to raise purses for horsemen who have been so supportive during this racing season,” he added.

Gulfstream enters the ninth weekend of its Championship Meet with nine stakes (eight graded) Saturday highlighted by the $300,000 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G2), $200,000 Davona Dale (G2), and $200,000 WinStar Gulfstream Park Mile (G2). The three races will be three of the five graded stakes making up the Rainbow 6. The Late Pick 4 Saturday will include all graded stakes.

Construction To Resume At Turfway Park; Churchill Hotel Plans Remain On Hold

During Thursday's conference call with investors, Churchill Downs, Inc. CEO Bill Carstanjen revealed that construction of a new grandstand and Historical Horse Racing venue will resume at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., reports bloodhorse.com.

Construction had been halted due to uncertainty over the future of Historical Horse Racing in the state of Kentucky, but on Feb. 22 Gov. Andy Beshear signed legislation that specifically includes HHR under the state's definition of pari-mutuel wagering.

“We anticipate spending approximately $145 million in project capital to finish building this premier facility,” Carstanjen said of Turfway. “And that will deliver approximately 800 construction jobs and 400 full-time permanent jobs in the Northern Kentucky area, as well as revitalize the Kentucky winter Thoroughbred racing circuit.”

However, construction on a hotel on the Churchill Downs property in Louisville, Ky. remains on hold as the company reviews revised plans for the project.
