No Spectators To Be Allowed At 2021 Dubai World Cup

The Dubai Racing Club will welcome limited horse connections, racing officials, accredited media and sponsors to Dubai World Cup, the world's most spectacular race day at Meydan Racecourse on Saturday, March 27, 2021.

Dubai Racing Club will host the race meeting without spectators and tickets will not be sold. All races will be contested and regulated in a standard fashion and results will be recorded in an official capacity.

In line with the UAE Government regulations, Dubai Racing Club will follow the strict health and safety measures, including full sanitization, thermal screening of attendees and social distancing.

Tickets To Colonial Downs Meet Go On Sale Monday

Live racing returns to Colonial Downs Racetrack in New Kent County, Va., in July, August and September with premium tickets going on sale Monday, March 15. General admission and parking are free. The best Thoroughbred horses and trainers from around the country will run every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for seven weeks from July 19 through Sept. 1. Post time each day will be 1:45 pm. Premium tickets and full racing schedule are available at www.colonialdowns.com.

Colonial Downs offers a family friendly atmosphere for everyone, casual dining in the Jockey Club and upscale Turf Club dining, private suites for larger parties, outdoor clubhouse boxes, reserved grandstand seating and a hospitality tent trackside with concession fare open to everyone.

Other race meet highlights include:

· Approximately $500,000 in daily purses and over $2.75 million in total stakes, including a robust Virginia bred and certified schedule during the meet will attract the best horses and jockeys from around the country to compete on the renowned Secretariat turf course, and second largest dirt track in North America.

· July 19 – 21 – opening week kicks off with over $400,000 in VA bred and restricted stakes races.

· Aug. 30 – Sept. 1 – closing week offering over $1.2 million in stakes races highlighted by the Virginia Derby® and Virginia Oaks® premier races on Tuesday, Aug. 31.

Irish Regulatory Board Bans Jockey Four Months Over ‘Inappropriate’ Video With Dead Horse

After a Wednesday hearing, the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board issued a four-month ban to jockey Rob James as a result of a video circulated on social media showing the rider sitting atop a dead horse, reports The Irish Sun.

The IHRB said: “The Referrals Committee found Mr. James in breach of Rule 272 (i) in that he acted in a manner which was prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct and good reputation of horseracing. They imposed a 12 month suspension of his Qualified Riders licence and Handlers Permit with the last eight of this suspended.”

James issued a public apology via The Irish Field after the video first became public.

“I would just like of apologize for my actions which were wholly inappropriate and disrespectful to a lovely 5-year-old mare, who unfortunately suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while at exercise earlier that morning, April 30, 2016,” James said. “To try defending my stupidity at the time would add further insult and hurt to the many loyal people that have supported me during my career. I have caused embarrassment to my employers, my family and most importantly the sport I love.”

Simulcast Fee Dispute: Churchill Withdraws Complaint Against Thoroughbred Owners Of California

On Feb. 2, 2021, Churchill Downs Technology Initiatives Company (CDTIC), a subsidiary of Churchill Downs, Inc. that operates advance deposit wagering companies TwinSpires and BetAmerica, filed a lawsuit against the Thoroughbred Owners of California for invoking state statute in an effort to bring a dispute over simulcast hub fees into binding arbitration.

According to the Thoroughbred Daily News, that lawsuit has been dropped. A “notice of voluntary dismissal” was filed Monday in the United States District Court (Central District, California, Western Division), which indicated that the parties reached an agreement on March 5.

The notice did not indicate specifics about that agreement, and neither TOC's Greg Avioli nor Scott Edelman, the CDTIC's attorney, responded to queries from the TDN.

The dispute centered around a hub agreement reached on Dec. 22, 2020, between Santa Anita Park and CDI's two online wagering companies, TwinSpires and BetAmerica. The agreement specified the percentage the ADW companies would receive on each dollar wagered by California residents using their platforms. By California statute, the maximum an ADW company may receive to facilitate a wager is 6.5%. The agreed-upon percentage in the agreement between the ADW companies and Santa Anita is redacted in the court filings. According to the lawsuit, TOC asked that the hub fee be reduced to 4.1%, which the complaint said “would cost Churchill Downs Technology millions of dollars and upset almost a decade of an established course of dealing between the contracting parties.”

Two months earlier, on Oct. 28, the suit alleged, TOC president and CEO Greg Avioli asked Churchill Downs Inc. executive Mike Ziegler to “voluntarily return the equivalent of 1% of the total” wagered on the company's ADW platforms in 2020. “TOC threatened that if Churchill Downs Technology did not comply with its 'voluntary' request, it would demand arbitration pursuant to section 19604,” the complaint alleges, calling the effort a to retain additional revenue a “shakedown.”
