Trainer Simon Callaghan Suspended 15 Days, Fined $5,000 For Shock Wave Violation

Santa Anita stewards have issued a 15-day suspension and $5,000 fine to trainer Simon Callaghan, reports bloodhorse.com, for violating the California Horse Racing Board's policy for extra corporeal shock wave therapy. Stewards minutes indicate that Callaghan trainee Federal Bureau worked four furlongs on May 22, 2021, even though the horse had received three shock wave treatments on May 5, 12, and 19.

Federal Bureau is an unraced 3-year-old by Medaglia d'Oro, who sold for $1.2 million at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling sale. He was nominated to the Triple Crown this year with Qatar Racing and Stonestreet Stable listed as owners.

Following a spate of equine fatalities at Santa Anita Park in 2019, the CHRB changed its shock wave policy in early 2020. Shock wave is used to increase blood flow and speed healing, but can have analgesic effects. Horses are now not allowed to resume workouts or racing within 30 days of a shock wave treatment; previously, that spacing had been 10 days.

Callaghan's suspension is scheduled to run from Nov. 14 through 28, and the CHRB has denied his application for a stay of suspension. Attorney Darrell Vienna told bloodhorse.com Callaghan plans to appeal.

Oregon Tribes Ask Governor For Deeper Examination Of Historical Racing Plan At Grants Pass Downs

Six regional tribal operators have asked Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) for a more thorough examination of the plans to add a group of 250 historical racing terminals to Grants Pass Downs, reports Casino.org.

Track owner Travis Boersma has released plans to build “The Flying Lark,” a combination of space for the historical racing terminals, a restaurant, a sports bar, and a banquet area.

The tribes' argument revolves around the question of whether or not historical racing can be considered pari-mutuel wagering, especially the latest technology. Historical racing has been legal in the state since 2012, but only at racetracks.

Previously, Gov. Brown had indicated that she would defer to the Oregon Racing Commission about the project.

“The state's regulatory framework has not evolved to reflect new technology or its impacts on the public,” the tribes wrote. “We are at a critical moment where the state is about to approve the largest expansion of state-regulated gambling in decades without public or legislative input.”

Irad Ortiz Suspended Three Days For Vosburgh Ride

Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. has been suspended three days by NYRA stewards, reports the Daily Racing Form, for “careless riding” in the G1 Vosburgh Stakes on Oct. 9 at Belmont Park.

Ortiz rode second-place finisher Firenze Fire, and while there was no official inquiry or objection, the Equibase chart indicates that Firenze Fire “angled in early under urging bumped Baby Yoda forcing that rival into Good Effort and bothering both foes.”

Ortiz will serve the days on Sunday, Oct. 24, and Oct. 28-29.

Santa Anita Offering ‘Ship & Win’ Program For Winter/Spring Meet

As part of a continuing effort to attract new horses and help to ensure better field size, Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., will again be offering significant bonuses to horsemen bringing out-of-state horses to run at Santa Anita's upcoming Winter/Spring Meet which begins on Dec. 26.

Eligible horses will receive a $5,000 bonus as well as purse money 35 percent above their allotted purse percentage for one start. Horses that become eligible at the 2021 Del Mar Fall Meet will also be eligible for Ship & Win bonuses for their first start at Santa Anita's Winter/Spring Meet.

The $5,000 bonus will also apply to any stakes horse that meets Ship & Win eligibility guidelines, but those horses will not be eligible for the 35 percent purse increase.

“All of us have been gratified at the success of the Ship & Win program this year, at both Del Mar and here at Santa Anita,” said Chris Merz, Santa Anita Director of Racing and Racing Secretary. “We're certainly hoping to continue to attract more out-of-state horses this winter and spring and given the significant amount of money available, this has certainly incentivized our horsemen to go out and procure additional racing prospects.”
