Maryland Jockey Club Adds Make-Up Dates; Horsemen’s Association Approves Purse Bonus Through Feb. 27

In order to provide funds for owners and trainers in the wake of the recent cancellations of live racing programs, the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association Board of Directors Jan. 12 approved a 20 percent Purse Bonus on all overnight races through Feb. 27 at Laurel Park.

In addition, the Maryland Jockey Club, during a meeting with the MTHA, agreed to add three Thursdays in February to the live racing calendar and said it will card at least 10 races a day in January and February when possible.

First post time has been moved to 12:10 p.m. in January to accommodate extra races.

Live racing at Laurel Park is scheduled to resume Sunday, Jan. 16, after the cancellation of six racing programs due to a project that involves recomposition of the cushion material on the dirt track. Racing also is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 17. Six stakes planned for Saturday, Jan. 22, will move to Saturday, Jan. 29.

A proposal to add live racing programs on Tuesday, Jan. 18, and Wednesday, Jan. 19, isn't feasible because of unavailable MRC personnel and required veterinarians. It was one of several suggestions made during an online community meeting held Jan. 11 to provide an update on the racing surface project and solicit feedback from horsemen.

The complete racing schedule under the updated calendar is as follows: Jan. 16-17; Jan. 20-23; Jan. 27-30; Feb. 3-6; Feb. 10-13; Feb. 18-21; and Feb. 24-27 for a total of 26 days.

New York: Hearing Prompts Discussion About Elimination Of Coupled Entries

Tuesday's hearing held by the New York State Gaming Commission was convened to look into the rule that requires married jockeys to be coupled entries for wagering purposes, reports the Daily Racing Form. While the speakers advocated for the elimination of that rule, the conversation evolved to suggest the elimination of all coupling requirements in New York as a way to boost wagering handle.

The marriage coupling rule came under fire when jockeys Trevor McCarthy and Katie Davis, married in late 2020, began riding in New York last year. Mindy Coleman, general counsel for the Jockeys' Guild, spoke at the hearing to testify that the rule prevented both McCarthy and Davis “from fully and fairly engaging in their careers.”

Despite supporting the elimination of the married jockey coupling rule, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul vetoed a bill to eliminate it last year due to concerns that allowing legislature to rewrite racing regulations could create a dangerous precedent.

NYSGC executive director Robert Williams concluded the hearing by stating that the commission staff would issue a recommendation later this year.

Registration Now Open For Track Superintendent Field Day At Gulfstream

Registration is now open for Track Superintendent Field Day on June 12-14 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. The gathering brings together track superintendents and staff to discuss best practices related to track maintenance, safety and operational issues for racing and training facilities.

“We are thrilled to be heading to Florida in 2022,” said Roy Smith, founder of the event and track superintendent at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. “Gulfstream Park is a world-class facility with terrific racing surfaces.”

Track Superintendent Field Day started as a small meeting at Philadelphia Park (now Parx Racing) in 2002 and since then has grown to become one of the racing industry's largest and most important events focusing on track safety.

New regulations under the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) are set to begin later this year, so the Field Day agenda will include a panel on ensuring that superintendents are ready for the hefty reporting requirements. This will also fulfill four hours of continuing education.

Track Superintendents Field Day is not-for-profit 501(c)(3) entity, and registration is free for superintendents and their staff, supported solely by the sponsors of this event, including title sponsor Equine Equipment.

The only expenses for track superintendents and staff are transportation and a discounted hotel rate at the Hampton Inn Hallandale Beach as the host hotel.

“My team and I look forward to welcoming everyone to Gulfstream Park,” said Tony Martinez Jr., track superintendent at the South Florida track.

“Track Superintendent Field Day always provides extensive educational information and networking, so we are proud to support this for the betterment of the industry,” said Steve Andersen of Equine Equipment. “The panels and speakers we bring together are instrumental in cultivating the superintendents of tomorrow and in building the skillsets of current supers. We urge tracks to send their key people to demonstrate a willingness to invest in their future and get the annual training from the oldest track superintendent group in North America.”

To register, call 877-905-0004 or email tracksupers@gmail.com.

More information regarding registration and the agenda will be forthcoming at www.tracksupers.com.
