Pimlico Surface Maintenance On Target To Begin April 17

The Maryland Jockey Club has confirmed that maintenance work on the dirt surface at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md., will begin Easter Sunday, April 17, with plans to reopen the track for training Wednesday, April 20.

MJC Acting President and General Manager Mike Rogers said a favorable weather forecast will allow the project to proceed at the preferred time rather than the following week.

The track maintenance crew each year has examined the Pimlico surface prior to the May race meet and last year repaired the base in specific areas.

Traditionally, there is no training on Easter Sunday at Pimlico and Laurel Park. Rogers and Track Superintendent Chris Bosley earlier said the project, which entails an examination of repairs made to the Pimlico surface last spring, would take about three days.

The Pimlico spring meet begins May 8 and concludes May 31.

Multiple Graded Stakes-Winning Quarter Horse Trainer Arrested, Summarily Suspended For Abusing Horse

Rodolfo Sanchez, multiple graded stakes-winning Quarter Horse trainer, has been summarily suspended in Texas after a video surfaced on social media appearing to show Sanchez repeatedly whipping a downed horse.

According to Don Ahrens, director of security and parking at Sam Houston Race Park, an investigation revealed the incident took place at a fair grounds in Texas. Ahrens said Sanchez claimed the horse in the video had an issue related to being saddled.

Two videos posted to Facebook capturing the incident, one of which was four minutes long. Both show the man purported to be Sanchez hitting a chestnut horse with an object while the horse is secured with a short tie to a tree. At various times during the beating, the horse is standing or flailing and at other times the horse is shown lying on the ground, having fallen with its head craned upwards due to the length of the tie. The video shows the horse breathing heavily throughout the incident. Other people are visible in the video, sometimes handing something to Sanchez and quickly backing away. Ahrens said the tool Sanchez used seems to have been a short whip with a bit of PVC pipe attached to it.

The full video is available here. (Viewer discretion is advised.)

“A lot of these guys use something like that when horses are on the walker and stop,” Ahrens said. “They'll reach out and tap them to get them going. If they go down, I've heard the same thing, that they'll just start wailing on them. It's not OK.”

Ahrens said the Texas Racing Commission issued a summary suspension to Sanchez on April 9 and gave him 72 hours to request an emergency hearing of alleged rule violations. After that, the summary suspension will remain in place until a formal hearing is scheduled. As of late April 12, Ahrens said he had not received information indicating Sanchez had requested an emergency hearing.

Ahrens also indicated Sanchez had been arrested related to the incident. Local outlet The 830 News reported Sanchez is facing a felony animal abuse charge from the case, which prompted cooperation between the Maverick County Sheriff's Office, Val Verde County Sheriff, and the U.S. Marshall's Office. The website also indicated the horse shown on the video is alive and was seized by county officials, who are caring for the animal at a Val Verde County barn.

Sanchez has just one start in 2022, having just finished a 60-day suspension for a testosterone overage at Delta Downs issued by the Louisiana State Racing Commission in February. His suspension ended on April 2.

According to Equibase, Sanchez began his training career in 1998. He is the winner of multiple graded stakes races, including the 2006 Grade 1 Retama Park Derby with Jesstified and more recently, the 2016 G3 TQHA Classic Stakes with Jess Toast Winner. His horses have earned over $4.8 million from 5,182, including 470 wins.

Racing To Help Ukraine: Trainer Gay Kelleway Leads Equine Aid Mission From Britain

A British horse racing collective has made its first trip to the Ukrainian border, delivering multiple loads of supplies for both humanitarian and equine relief causes.

The “Racing To Help Ukraine” humanitarian aide team, led by retired trainer Charlie Mann and jockeys Oisin Murphy and A.P. McCoy, began their journey on April 10 and arrived on Tuesday, April 12.

Additionally, trainer Gay Kelleway led a second team designed to support equine aide for horses rescued from Ukraine. According to racingpost.com, Kelleway also left on April 10 and arrived at a Polish stable on the border on April 12. There are approximately 25 horses at the stable, with more expected; Kelleway plans to make another trip next week.

“It's horrendous,” Kelleway told the Racing Post. “Horses have been so good to me in life, without them I'd be nothing. I felt I had to do something, and what I saw today was heartbreaking. It's awful.

“Me and Neil Carson, my co-driver, were going to stay but we were told we would be of more help going back and getting more supplies to keep it going to bring horses back next week. It isn't getting better this war, in fact it's getting far worse.”

Woodbine Kicks Off 2022 Season On Saturday; No Delay For First Year Since 2019

For the first time since April 2019, Woodbine Entertainment is set to open its Thoroughbred racing season without delay this Saturday (April 16) at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.

The familiar sounds of the thoroughbreds storming around the Toronto oval has been absent over the past two springs due to COVID-19 restrictions preventing the operation of live racing in Ontario. Both the 2020 and 2021 seasons did not begin until June, nearly two months later than originally planned.

The 2022 season, which opens with live racing this Saturday and Sunday, will run through December 11, and features a total of 133 race dates.

“To have opening day back in its usual position on the calendar is very important to not only our operations at Woodbine, but also the livelihoods of our racing participants,” said Jim Lawson, CEO of Woodbine Entertainment. “Having had so much uncertainty throughout our last two seasons it provides great relief to start our season in mid-April and look ahead at a full racing calendar.”

The 163rd running of The Queen's Plate on Sunday, August 21 is the crown jewel of the 2022 racing season at Woodbine. More than $16.9 million in stakes races will be contested throughout the new season, including 37 graded stakes.

Other notable dates for the 2022 season include the Woodbine Oaks Presented by Budweiser (July 24), the Ricoh Woodbine Mile (September 17) and the Breeders' Stakes (October 2).

Post time for Saturday's opening day is 1:10 p.m.
