Keeneland Fall Meet Stakes Schedule Worth Record $8.75 Million

Before Keeneland hosts the Breeders' Cup World Championships for the third time, the track will offer 22 stakes worth a record $8.75 million during its Fall Meet. The 17-day season from Oct. 7-29 will open with 11 stakes – nine of which are “Win and You're In” events as part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series Presented by America's Best Racing – during the signature three-day Fall Stars Weekend. Keeneland has adjusted several stakes on the schedule to attract horses bound for the Breeders' Cup, most notably moving the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine (G2) to opening day.

The Fall Meet continues an exceptional year at Keeneland, which awarded the previous meet record $7.7 million for 22 stakes during the 15-day Spring Meet in April. A total of $1.5 million of that amount came from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund (KTDF). Full fields of quality contenders drove all-sources handle to a record $219 million.

During the Fall Meet, Keeneland will present 12 stakes on grass and 10 stakes on dirt while offering multiple stakes on six days. Purses of every stakes have increased and several have doubled. KTDF is contributing $1.3 million to Fall Meet stakes purses, pending approval from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

The season's richest race is the $1 million Coolmore Turf Mile (G1), a Breeders' Cup Challenge race that anchors opening Saturday of Fall Stars Weekend. Along with Coolmore's first year as sponsor of the premier turf stakes, the race is again worth seven figures – a status it held from 2014, when it was Keeneland's first million-dollar race, through 2019.

“Keeneland has planned a Fall Meet that promises to be better than ever,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “Adjustments made to the season last year, including increasing the number of stakes to 22 and boosting the final days with multiple stakes, produced an extremely successful meet from start to finish. This year, even higher stakes purses indicate the strength of the Kentucky circuit while helping Keeneland set the stage for the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which we are proud to host for the third time.”

During Fall Stars Weekend, each winner of a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race receives an automatic starting position and free entry into the World Championships at Keeneland on Nov. 4-5.

Opening day, Oct. 7, will feature three stakes, all Win and You're In events: $500,000 Darley Alcibiades (G1) (NetJets Juvenile Fillies-G1), $350,000 Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (G2) (Qatar Racing Sprint-G1) and $350,000 JPMorgan Chase Jessamine (G2) (Juvenile Fillies Turf-G1).

Keeneland moved the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine to opening day this year after previously running the race on the following Wednesday. The new date will increase attention for the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine and place the race exactly four weeks before the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. The race also will be included in the popular Keeneland Turf Pick 3 wager on opening day.

Joining the Coolmore Turf Mile (FanDuel Mile-G1) as Breeders' Cup Challenge Series races on opening Saturday, Oct. 8 are the $600,000 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) (TVG Juvenile-G1) and $350,000 Thoroughbred Club of America (G2) (Filly and Mare Sprint-G1).

Other stakes that day are the $600,000 First Lady (G1) Presented by UK HealthCare and the $350,000 Woodford (G2) Presented by FanDuel. Both stakes are expected to attract Breeders' Cup hopefuls.

Sunday of Fall Stars Weekend presents three stakes – all Breeders' Cup Challenge races: $600,000 Juddmonte Spinster (G1) (Distaff-G1), $350,000 Castle & Key Bourbon (G2) (Juvenile Turf-G1) and $250,000 Indian Summer (L) Presented by Keeneland Select (Juvenile Turf Sprint-G1).

Stakes on the second week of the Fall Meet kick off Friday, Oct. 14 with the $300,000 Sycamore (G3) for older males racing 1½ miles on turf. Keeneland moved the Sycamore a week earlier on the calendar to serve as an option for horses pointing at the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1).

The following day, Saturday, Oct. 15, is the Fall Meet's sixth Grade 1 stakes, the $600,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Presented by Dixiana. To mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, Great British Racing International and QIPCO British Champions Series, on behalf of British racing, will present the winning owner of the Keeneland invitational a specially designed strawberry dish produced by Royal jewelers Garrard. The trophy is commemorating the Queen's international impact on Thoroughbred racing.

The third stakes that weekend is the $300,000 Franklin (G3) on Sunday, Oct. 16.

Stakes action resumes the following Saturday, Oct 22 with the $350,000 Lexus Raven Run (G2) and $250,000 Perryville, which was upgraded to Listed status for 2022. The following day is the $300,000 Rood & Riddle Dowager (G3).

The Fall Meet will close with two multiple stakes days beginning with the $300,000 Rubicon Valley View (G3) and $200,000 Myrtlewood on Friday, Oct. 28. Closing day will feature the $350,000 Hagyard Fayette (G2), $300,000 Bryan Station (G3) and $200,000 Bowman Mill.

The Bryan Station was upgraded to a Grade 3 event for 2022.

“The stakes schedule is designed to present our horsemen and fans with exceptional racing opportunities from opening day through the final card of the Fall Meet,” Keeneland Vice President of Racing Gatewood Bell said. “We're extremely excited by the purse structure we're able to offer and are looking forward to some outstanding competition in October.”

HISA Clarifies Enforcement Dates For Racetrack Safety Regulations

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority released the following list of clarifications on Thursday, regarding the relevant enforcement dates for its racetrack safety regulations.

Rule 2276. HORSESHOES

New horseshoe requirements will not be enforced until August 1, 2022 to ensure adequate inventory of HISA compliant horseshoes.

Rule 2281. RIDING CROP SPECIFICATIONS

The riding crop specification rule will not be enforced until August 1, 2022 to enable adequate inventory of HISA compliant crops.

Note: Rule 2280. USE OF THE RIDING CROP will be enforced July 1, 2022.

Rule 2143. RACEHORSE MONITORING (Vaccinations)

Enforcement of the HISA vaccination requirements is delayed until January 1, 2023 to allow horses to be vaccinated with previously unrequired vaccines at times that do not interfere with training and racing schedules. HISA vaccines must be administered by January 1, 2023.

Note: HISA vaccination requirements are in addition to all state and racetrack vaccine requirements; therefore, all state and racetrack requirements still apply.

Rule 2261. TRANSFER OF CLAIMED HORSE RECORDS

When a Horse is successfully claimed by a new Trainer, the previous Trainer must transfer Trainer records … to the new Trainer within three (3) days of transfer of the Horse to the new Trainer.

Note: 'Trainer records' include only records of medical, therapeutic, and surgical treatments and procedures. Required records do NOT include other materials related to training techniques or protocols.

The veterinary treatment records submitted to HISA by the Attending Veterinarian are associated with the Horse's data record and as such, they travel with the Horse. As soon as the Designated Owner and/or Responsible Person (usually the Trainer) are changed in the HISA System, the new Designated Owner and Responsible Person will have access to the veterinary treatment records of the claimed horse.

However, the Trainer treatment records, which are only required to be maintained by the trainer (and not submitted by the trainer unless specifically requested by HISA), would be transferred according to the following process:

a. The Claiming Clerk will process the claim, changing the Responsible Person and/or Designated Owner to the new Designated Owner and/or Responsible Person (in the HISA System).

b. A message will be sent to both the Current Responsible Person and the new Designated Owner and/or Responsible Person (using HISA Messaging System) directing the process for transfer of trainer treatment records.

c. The Current Responsible Person will be directed to a Claim Form on the HISA website for listing all treatments performed on the horse within the last 60 days, including medical, therapeutic, and surgical treatments.

d. The Current Responsible Person will send the completed Claim Form to the new Designated Owner and/or Responsible Person outside of the HISA System. For example, the Current Responsible Person obtains the contact information of the new Designated Owner/Responsible Person from the Claiming Clerk so they can email the form.

e. A message will be sent to the new Designated Owner and/or Responsible Person asking them to confirm receipt of the Horse records. Additional technological innovations may further facilitate the process.

Note: Trainers are not required to maintain nor transfer Horse training records, nor are they required to transfer records created prior to July 1. Therefore, if a Horse is claimed on July 15, trainers are only expected to transfer 15 days of records.

Rule 2271. PROHIBITED PRACTICES

The following are prohibited practices:

(d) Thermocautery including but not limited to pin firing and freeze firing, or application of any substance to cause vesiculation or blistering of the skin, or a counter-irritant effect.

Notes:

• The prohibition on pin firing and freeze firing applies only to the dorsal surface of the third metacarpal/metatarsal bones (“shins”). This prohibition will apply beginning with the foal crop of 2022; it will not apply to horses foaled prior to 2022.

• Pin firing and freeze firing of other structures is not prohibited.

• Application of any substance to cause vesiculation or blistering of the skin or a counter irritant effect is prohibited on all structures.

(f) Use of electrical medical therapeutic devices including magnetic wave therapy, laser, electro-magnetic blankets, boots, electro-shock, or any other electrical devices that may produce an analgesic effect within forty-eight (48) hours of a training activity or of the start of the published post time for which a Horse is scheduled to race.

Notes:

• 'Analgesic effect' means a pain-masking effect that would compromise the ability to determine a Horse's soundness. Therefore, those modalities may be used for other purposes.

• 'Training activity' means a published high-speed work.

Rule 9000. REGISTRATION OF COVERED PERSONS AND COVERED HORSES

Registration Requirement for Covered Persons. A Covered Person as defined by 15 USC § 3051(6) shall register with the Authority in accordance with this rule on the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority website at https://portal.hisausapps.org/registration.

Notes:

• Enforcement of the requirement to register under Rule 9000(a) will begin on July 2, 2022, the day after the program effective date of July 1, 2022.

• Any person who has registered with HISA may request to be unregistered by sending an email with the request to HISA at unregister@hisaus.org. A person shall be deemed unregistered immediately upon HISA's receipt of the email according to the date stamp on the email.

Additional resources and information may be found on the HISA website at https://www.hisaus.org/. Implementation resources are located on the Resources page of the website at https://www.hisaus.org/home#resources.

Stitched won the $150,000 Mystic Lake Derby Wednesday night at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minn.,with jockey Florent Geroux aboard. The 3-year-old is trained by Gregory Foley and is owned by Nathan McCauley, Michael W. Olszewski and William J. Minton. Stitched pressed the pace throughout the one-mile turf race before taking the lead in mid-stretch. As the betting favorite, he paid $6.20. The final time was 1:34.76.

The Mystic Lake Derby, the richest race of the Canterbury season, was one of six stakes carded as part of the Mystic Lake Northern Stars Turf Festival. The single-day handle record was broken when $4,737,428 was wagered on the 10-race card. The previous high was $3,795,180, set last year on the Northern Stars Festival races.

“I thought [Geroux] rode the perfect race sitting behind the pace,” Foley said. “I always thought he could rate but his previous races did not shape up that way.”

Minnesota-bred Bens Malice, trained by David Van Winkle and ridden by Alonso Quinonez, finished second in the Mystic Lake Derby. Heaven Street, with Javier Castellano aboard was third.

Castellano won the $100,000 Curtis Sampson Oaks earlier on the card aboard Schlofmitz. The 3-year-old filly is owned by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, LLC and Michael J. Caruso and is trained by Michael Maker. The Oaks was conducted at one mile on the turf.

Harry Hernandez, who won the first race with Jetinwithclass, won his second race of the night with 3-year-old Royals' Lil Diva in the $60,000 MTA Stallion Auction Stakes. The filly is trained by Miguel Angel Silva and owned by Thumbs Up Racing, LLC (David Cobb).

She Can't Sing won the $100,000 Lady Canterbury Stakes with jockey Jareth Loveberry. Trained by Chris Block, the 5-year-old mare is owned by Lothenbach Stables, Inc. (Bob Lothenbach). She Can't Sing tracked pace setters Medalla Match and Beach Flower.

“She was confident all the way around,” Loveberry said. “I was very comfortable on the backside.”

She Can't Sing took the lead at the top of the stretch and went on to win by a length in 1:33.82. She returned $5.80.

Mr Dumas won the Mystic Lake Mile with Reylu Gutierrez. The 6-year-old horse is owned by WSS Racing, LLC (William S. Simon) & Hooties Racing, LLC (Mark Brian Moore) and is trained by John Ortiz.
