Monmouth, BetMakers Team Again To Sponsor $1 Million Bonus For Three-Race Sweep That Begins With Haskell

Monmouth Park and BetMakers Technology Group will again partner as sponsors for the $1 million “BetMakers Bonanza” bonus for the connections of any horse that sweeps a series of three designated races, the track announced Saturday.

To earn the seven-figure bonus, a horse has to the win the TVG.com Haskell Stakes (G1) July 23 at Monmouth Park, the Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1) August 27 at Saratoga, and the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) November 5 at Keeneland.

This marks the third straight year that Monmouth Park and BetMakers have offered the bonus, with Authentic earning the $1 million in 2021 during the COVID-19 altered racing schedule.

“BetMakers has been a great partner for Monmouth Park, and we're pleased to be able to offer the BetMakers Bonanza bonus for a third straight year,” said Dennis Drazin, the chairman and CEO of Darby Development LLC, operators of Monmouth Park.

Australia-based BetMakers previously teamed with Monmouth Park to make Fixed Odds wagering available at the Jersey Shore during the current meet, the only racetrack in the United States to offer such wagering. With Fixed Odds, bettors get the odds at the time of their bet.

“It's great to continue to support creative initiatives from Monmouth Park as Monmouth Park continues to innovate in the racing space,” said Dallas Baker, the head of International Operations for BetMakers. “It's been a big year for the Monmouth Park-BetMakers partnership with the massive new infield board that has proven to be quite popular, Fixed Odds betting up and running, and new betting terminals being rolled out. Hopefully, we can see the bonus handed out again, just like when Authentic earned it in 2021.”

Authentic won the Haskell Stakes, following that with victories in the Kentucky Derby (G1), and Breeders' Cup Classic, on the way to Horse of the Year honors. The Kentucky Derby was rescheduled from its traditional spot the first Saturday in May to September 5 that year.

The Haskell Stakes, the centerpiece of the Monmouth Park meet, will be contested for the 55th time and offers the added inducement as a “Win & You're In” qualifier for the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Unsealed Documents Show Surick Guilty Plea, Agreement To Cooperate In Federal Probe

Recently unsealed court documents show that Standardbred trainer Nicholas Surick pleaded guilty to multiple charges in October 2020 as part of a cooperating agreement with the Southern District of New York in its federal probe into horse doping.

Surick faced up to 30 years imprisonment if found guilty on drug adulteration and misbranding conspiracy and obstruction charges brought against him. In a video appearance in front of U.S. District Court Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil on Oct. 19, 2020, Surick agreed to a waiver of indictment and pleaded guilty to an information charge of two counts of conspiracy and one count for obstruction. That agreement and plea were sealed by the court until recently, as was the transcript of the proceeding.

“Do you understand that the agreement provides that you must cooperate fully with the Office of the United States Attorney, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and any other law enforcement agency designated by the United States Attorney?” Vyskocil asked Surick.

“Yes, your honor,” Surick replied.

Vyskocil then told Surick that “if you fully comply with the understandings in the agreement and cooperate with the government,” the U.S. attorney will not prosecute Surick for his participation in conspiracies to misbrand or adulterate performance-enhancing drugs in racehorses or for his actions related to obstructing a federal investigation into doping a horse named Northern Virgin.

Surick was reminded by Vyskocil that the aforementioned actions, called “relevant conduct,” can be considered for purposes of sentencing related to his guilty pleas.

The unsealed information charge covers many of the activities revealed in a March 2020 indictment against Surick and 18 others, many of whom have pleaded guilty (including trainer Jorge Navarro and veterinarian Kristian Rhein) or convicted by a jury (veterinarian/supplier Seth Fishman and his employee Lisa Giannelli). A superseding indictment, issued in November 2020 – the month after Surick's guilty plea and agreement to cooperate – did not list Surick among those charged.

The charge states that Surick, who is also a Thoroughbred owner, engaged in illegal drug adulteration and misbranding conspiracy with the intent to defraud and mislead  from 2016 until March 2020. Jorge Navarro was the recipient of some of the misbranded drugs, including a customized anti-inflammatory known as “red acid.” A second conspiracy count states that Surick directed veterinarians  to administer misbranded drugs and specifically refers to the blood-doping of a horse named Northern Virgin by a trainer in Ohio prior to the horse's race in New York.

Northern Virgin is also the focus of the obstruction charge against Surick, who became aware that he was the subject of an investigation by the New Jersey Racing Commission and the FBI. In December 2018, Surick directed the horse to be moved out of state in an attempt to avoid New Jersey officials from administering an out of competition drug test and then told others to lie about the dates and the reason the horse was moved. It was then that Surick began using encrypted communication tools like WhatsApp to avoid being traced and telling others in his circle to do the same.

Despite those efforts, officials were able to record conversations between Surick and others, including Navarro. They also tracked down Northern Virgin before the horse was shipped to Ohio and drew blood samples that court records say detected the blood-doping agent EPO.

One of the calls the FBI intercepted was between Surick and indicted Thoroughbred trainer Michael Tannuzzo, discussing Navarro.

“You know how many f—ing horses he (Navarro) f—ing killed and broke down that I made disappear,” Surick told Tannuzzo. “You know how much trouble he could get in … if they found out … the six horses we killed?”

Navarro was sentenced to five years and is currently serving his sentence at FCI Miami, a low security federal correctional facility. He is scheduled for release June 18, 2026.

Sentencing for Surick has been held in abeyance pending his cooperation in ongoing cases, including those where Surick may be called upon to testify.

Saratoga Purses Boosted By Over $1.6 Million; Maiden Special Weights To Run For $105,000

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) has announced significant increases of more than $1.6 million to its purse schedule for the 2022 summer meet at historic Saratoga Race Course, which opens on Thursday, July 14 and continues through Monday, September 5.

The condition book for the Saratoga summer meet is now available online at nyra.com/Saratoga. Physical copies of the condition book will be available in the Belmont Park racing office beginning Wednesday, June 29th.

“We're pleased to be able to offer these purse increases across the middle core of our racing program,” said Frank Gabriel, Jr., NYRA's Senior Vice President of Racing Operations. “We look forward to continuing to support our horsemen at the upcoming Saratoga summer meet. These purse increases should only add to the already competitive racing on offer at the nation's greatest race meet.”

All open two and three-other-than allowance races will see an increase of $15,000 to $120,000 and $125,000, respectively, while a-other-than allowances will be increased by $12,000 to $115,000. Restricted one and two-other than allowances will both see an increase of $5,000 to $95,000 and $100,000, respectively.

$50,000 starter allowances will increase by $8,000 and offer a $70,000 purse while $50,000 claiming races will offer an $80,000 purse, up $8,000 from last year. Additionally, there will be a $6,000 increase for the $40,000 level, a $5,000 increase for the $25,000 level, and a $4,000 boost for both the $32,000 and $20,000 levels. All claiming purses in excess of a 2:1 purse to claiming price ratio are subject New York State Gaming Commission approval.

Open maiden special weight races at Saratoga will enjoy a $5,000 boost, increasing to $105,000. New York-bred maiden special weights will increase by $3,000 to $88,000.

In addition to these purse increases, the NYRA Maiden Allowance Auction Series will return this summer for the fourth year following its launch in 2019. All races in this series are restricted to horses that sold or RNA'd for $50,000 or less at their most recent auction recognized by Equibase, providing an additional incentive and opportunity for owners to compete at Saratoga.

The Maiden Allowance Auction Series races will be offered in the first condition book of the Saratoga meet for purses of $83,000, a $3,000 increase over 2021. The Maiden Allowance Auction Series condition will also include up to $14,442 in New York Breeding Fund open company owners awards for New York-breds finishing first through third in the Maiden Allowance Auction Series.

Pari-mutuel wagering funds the majority of the NYRA purse account, which is awarded to horsemen and, in turn, benefits hundreds of small businesses operating at NYRA tracks and others dependent on the thoroughbred racing industry. Thoroughbred racing in New York State is responsible for 19,000 jobs and more than $3 billion in annual statewide economic impact.

Highlighted by the Grade 1, $1.25 million Runhappy Travers on August 27 and the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney on August 6, the 2022 summer meet at Saratoga Race Course will feature 77 stakes worth $22.6 million in total purses.

‘Protecting The Integrity Of The Sport’: Bob Baffert Suspended From NYRA Tracks For One Year

Following the issuance of a hearing report by Judge O. Peter Sherwood in April, and in accordance with the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) hearing rules and procedures, a three-member hearing panel has today delivered a final determination in the matter of Robert A. Baffert.

After a two-month review of the 50-page hearing report, the panel has moved to suspend Mr. Baffert from racing or training activities at all NYRA tracks for 365 calendar days effective immediately.

The panel's decision credits Mr. Baffert with 59 days served under the prior NYRA temporary suspension as well as the 90-day suspension issued by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and reciprocally honored by the New York State Gaming Commission. Accordingly, Mr. Baffert is excluded from participating in racing or training activities at all NYRA tracks through January 25, 2023.

“This was an impartial and deliberative process that has resulted in a lengthy suspension of the sport's most prominent trainer,” said Dave O'Rourke, NYRA President & CEO. “However, this is not simply about Bob Baffert or any one individual but about protecting the integrity of the sport here in New York. Today's decision advances that goal.”

The 14-page decision issued by the hearing panel can be found here.

As addressed in the NYRA hearing rules and procedures, which can be found here, the decision of the hearing panel is “final” and takes effect “immediately.” Further, Rule 16(f) states that, “There shall be no administrative appeal within NYRA of the Panel's final decision.”

In September 2021, NYRA delivered a statement of charges to Mr. Baffert alleging that he had engaged in conduct detrimental to the best interests of the sport of thoroughbred racing or potentially injurious to the health or safety of horses or riders.

Further, as detailed in the statement of charges, NYRA charged that the conduct warrants revocation or suspension of Baffert's right to train horses, enter races, or engage in any racing-related activity at all NYRA properties including Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course.

NYRA established Hearing Rules and Procedures to provide a formalized mechanism for a respondent to reply to charges and to participate in a hearing in accordance with due process rights.

The NYRA administrative hearing in the matter of Mr. Baffert commenced on Monday, January 24 and concluded on Friday, January 28. Judge Sherwood, a retired New York State Supreme Court Justice, served as hearing officer to ensure the proceedings were fairly and impartially conducted in accordance with NYRA's Hearing Rules and Procedures.

The hearing report issued by Judge Sherwood can be found here.

Clark Brewster, an attorney for Baffert, issued the following statement in response to the ruling: “From reading the NYRA selected panel's decision it is obvious they tried hard to mitigate and generalize the nonsensical and contradictory ramblings of the Peter Sherwood Order, but still they capitulated to the will of a few NYRA Board members who are blindly driven by jealousy and self interest to destroy Bob.”
