Report: Trainer Chad Brown Pleads Guilty To Reduced Charge In Domestic Violence Case

Four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of harassment in connection with an August domestic violence incident in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., according to published reports.

The pleading was first reported by  WNYT, an NBC affiliate in Albany, N.Y.

The harassment plea was reduced from the original charge of criminal obstruction of breathing, a misdemeanor. Brown was arrested the night of Aug. 17 after a female acquaintance of his told police she used a key to enter Brown's residence and discovered him with another woman. Prosecutors said the victim claims Brown pushed her down a stairway, pinned her to the floor, attempted to choke her, then threw her out of the house.

During an Aug. 18 arraignment, Brown's attorney told Judge Francine Vero the incident was a “home invasion,” according to the Albany Times-Union.

The guilty plea for harassment comes with a sentence of one year of conditional discharge, meaning if Brown meets the conditions set by the court over the next year he will face no further consequences and the guilty plea will not be on his permanent record. Brown appeared in court with his attorney.

According to Daily Racing Form, the conditions include evaluation by a certified behavior health professional.

The victim of the harassment received a two-year order of protection from the court. The woman, who has not been named, is employed by another New York trainer.

In a statement issued to media by his attorney, Matthew Chauvin, Brown stated: “While I'm satisfied to put this unfortunate incident behind me and pleased that as a result I will not have a criminal record, I regret details of my personal life being made public through the media.

“For this, I apologize to my family, friends, clients, and coworkers. I can and will do better in the future. I greatly appreciate all who have supported me throughout this ordeal.”

Brown has faced no sanctions from racing regulators or individual racetracks over the incident.

Keeneland Purchases Manchester Farm, Has No Immediate Plans For Historic Property

Keeneland announced the purchase of historic Manchester Farm, whose rolling hills and iconic barn with distinctive blue-and-white cupolas has provided a stunning backdrop for countless photographs. Located on the northern boundary of Keeneland Race Course, Manchester Farm is one of the most recognizable farms in Kentucky.

Originally named Manchester Springs Plantation after a creek that runs through the property, the farm has a rich history that dates back to the 1700s. In 1804, Francis Keen (first generation of the Keene family) passed 200 acres of Manchester Springs Plantation to his son. The land remained in the Keen/Keene family for five generations until 1935, when J.O. “Jack” Keene sold 147.6 acres to Keeneland Association for the creation of a model race track.

“The history of Manchester Farm and Keeneland are intertwined,” Keeneland president and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “We were thrilled to have the opportunity to purchase the farm and plan to celebrate this Central Kentucky treasure for generations.”

Keeneland purchased the nearly 200-acre farm from Calumet Farm, owned by Brad Kelley. He purchased Manchester Farm in 2016 from noted breeder and owner Mike G. Rutherford, who bought the farm in 1976 from Duval Headley (nephew of Hal Price Headley, a Keeneland founder and the track's first President).

“Over the course of Keeneland's 86-year history, we have acquired adjacent properties to preserve the track's picturesque setting and to further our mission to perpetuate the best of Thoroughbred racing and sales,” Arvin said. “While we do not have immediate plans for the future of the property, Lexington and the Thoroughbred community can trust that Keeneland will use the land to strengthen our industry, enhance the Central Kentucky region and always do what is best for the horse.”

Rosario Suspended One Racing Day For Whip Violation Aboard Clairiere In Distaff

Jockey Joel Rosario has been issued a $900 fine and has been suspended one racing day after he violated national whip use rules in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Rosario finished third aboard Clairiere in a thrilling blanket finish in that race. Only two noses separated Malathaat, Blue Stripe, and Clairiere at the wire.

According to a stewards' ruling issued Nov. 9, Rosario struck Clairiere seven times with the crop, one hit over the six strikes limit.

The ruling stated Rosario will serve his suspension on Nov. 16.

He will also be assessed three points on his license for the violation. The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's rules created a point system for multiple violations so that repeat offenders would eventually have penalties compounded. Riders with 11 to 15 points on their license would get an additional seven days of suspension on top of the penalty for the newest violation; riders with 16 to 20 points get an additional 15 days, and riders with 21 or more points could get 30 additional days.

Points do expire between six months and one year post-violation on a sliding scale based on the violation class assigned to them.
