OwnerView: Virtual Thoroughbred Owner Conference Planned For 2023

OwnerView announced Thursday that the 2023 Thoroughbred Owner Conference will be held as a free series of virtual panels over 10 months. The conference series, hosted by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and presented by Bessemer Trust, Stoll Keenon Ogden, and The Green Group, will be held on the first or second Tuesday of each month beginning in March.

“This new format began in 2021, and over the past two years it has been very successful in reaching new and existing Thoroughbred owners,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView.

This year's panels will be more interactive, with videos, open discussions, and other enhancements. Panels will cover tried and true topics such as accounting and creating a business plan in addition to new topics such as handicapping for owners, buying at public auction, corrective surgeries, and claiming.

The conference panels will be streamed live, and attendees will be able to ask questions during the discussion via typed messages that will be addressed at the end of each panel. Replays of the conference series panels will also be made available.

For those who wish to review previous conferences, recordings of all 17 panels from the 2021 and 2022 virtual series and from previous live OwnerView conferences can be watched on the OwnerView YouTube channel, and there is a link to the 2021 and 2022 virtual series replays on the OwnerView website: Library of past panels from Virtual Conferences.

There is no registration fee for the 2023 live or recorded virtual conference series, but registration is required. For more information about the owner conference series, including the schedule of panels and registration, please visit ownerview.com/event/conference  or contact Gary Falter at 859-224-2803 or gfalter@jockeyclub.com.

OwnerView is a joint effort spearheaded by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association to encourage ownership of Thoroughbreds and provide accurate information on aspects of ownership such as trainers, public racing syndicates, the process of purchasing and owning a Thoroughbred, racehorse retirement, and owner licensing.

The need for a central resource to encourage Thoroughbred ownership was identified in the comprehensive economic study of the sport that was commissioned by The Jockey Club and conducted by McKinsey & Company in 2011. The OwnerView site was launched in May 2012.

Cody’s Wish Voted FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment Of The Year

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association, National Turf Writers and Broadcasters (NTWAB), and Daily Racing Form announced Wednesday that the heartwarming story of Cody's Wish has been voted the 2022 FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year based on the results of more than 1,000 votes cast via Twitter and an online poll.

The uplifting story that swept across America had the ultimate ending when Cody's Wish won the Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., on November 5 in dramatic fashion. With namesake Cody Dorman and family in attendance, Cody's Wish gave a winning performance that continues to warm the hearts of all who watched in amazement.

The FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year will be recognized during the 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards Presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club at The Breakers Palm Beach in Florida tomorrow, January 26. The ceremony will be broadcast live on FanDuel TV and Racetrack Television Network (RTN), and will be streamed live on multiple outlets including NTRA.comamericasbestracing.netbloodhorse.comequibase.com, and NTRA's Youtube channel.

Voting concluded on Jan. 17 and Moment of the Year voters chose from 11 occurrences in 2022 illustrating a range of human emotions as well as outstanding displays of equine athleticism.

Past Moments of the Year

The first-ever “NTRA Moment of the Year” was the touching scene between Charismatic and jockey Chris Antley following the 1999 Belmont Stakes. The next year's winner was the stretch run of the 2000 Breeders' Cup Classic, which saw Tiznow hold on for a dramatic victory against Giant's Causeway. Tiznow won again the following year as fans selected his stirring repeat victory in the Classic over Sakhee. In 2002, fans cited the passing of the last living Triple Crown winner, Seattle Slew. In 2003, the popular Kentucky Derby win by Funny Cide was selected. Birdstone's upset win in the Belmont Stakes over Smarty Jones took down top honors for 2004. In 2005, fans selected Afleet Alex's spectacular victory in the 2005 Preakness Stakes.

Voters in 2006 chose Barbaro's gallant struggle to recover from his Preakness injury while at the New Bolton Center. The 2007 Moment of the Year was a historic victory by the filly Rags to Riches over Curlin in the Belmont Stakes. In 2008, it was Zenyatta's win in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic. Zenyatta “repeated” in 2009 as fans selected her triumph in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

In 2010, fans selected Blame's narrow Breeders' Cup Classic victory over Zenyatta. Drosselmeyer's hard-fought win over Game on Dude in the Breeders' Cup Classic was the public's choice for 2011. For 2012, the recovery of Paynter from near-deadly battles with laminitis and colitis captured the hearts of voters like no other story. In 2013, fans recognized Mucho Macho Man's nose victory in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic for his popular connections. The 2014 award went to California Chrome's dominant win in Kentucky Derby 140. In 2015 there was a landslide vote in favor of American Pharoah's historic Triple Crown-clinching Belmont Stakes win. In 2016, California Chrome was again part of the winning moment – a dramatic Dubai World Cup victory that came as Victor Espinoza's saddle slipped out from underneath him.

In 2017, the tragic fire at San Luis Rey and the industry's response led the way among the votes cast while Justify's sweep of the Classics to become just the 13th Triple Crown winner was the clear pick the following year. In 2019, Maximum Security's historic disqualification in the 145th Kentucky Derby – the first winner in Derby history to be demoted for a racing infraction— earned the distinction. In 2020, Authentic's historic win in the 146th Kentucky Derby, run in September and without fans due to the coronavirus pandemic, was voted as the FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year.

Breeders' Cup success had eluded Japanese runners as evidenced by an 0-13 record heading into the 2021 Breeders' Cup World Championships. That changed dramatically on Breeders' Cup Saturday when Marche Lorraine (45-1/Distaff) and Loves Only You (4-1/Filly & Mare Turf) each won for trainer Yoshito Yahagi. The victories by the Japanese duo was voted the 2021 FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year.

$750,000 Charles Town Oaks Becomes Richest 3-Year-Old Filly Sprint Stakes In North America

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races has released its 2023 stakes schedule following approval by the West Virginia Racing Commission at a Tuesday morning meeting.

Charles Town's biggest day on the 2023 calendar follows up on a format that started in 2020, as Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races presents both of its graded stakes — the $1 million Charles Town Classic (G2) and $750,000 Charles Town Oaks (G3) — on the same Friday, Aug. 25 card. The Classic and Oaks card gets underway with a special first post of 5 p.m. Eastern.

This year's Charles Town Oaks received a purse increase to $750,000, making it the richest sprint race for 3-year-old fillies in North America. Last year's edition was won by Society for owner Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds LLC, trainer Steve Asmussen, and jockey Tyler Gaffalione. Society went on to capture the Grade 1 Cotillion at Parx in her subsequent start, becoming the 7th Grade 1 or future-Grade 1-winning Charles Town Oaks alumna in the race's 14-year history.

For the first time since local hero Researcher won the first two editions of the Charles Town Classic, 2022 saw a repeat winner of the track's signature event, as Bruce Lunsford's Art Collector pulled off the feat in wire-to-wire fashion under jockey Luis Saez. The Grade 1-winning Bill Mott-trainee will look to add to his resume this Saturday in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream Park.

While unable to match the win of fellow West Virginia-bred Runnin'toluvya, David Raim's Muad'dib continued a trend of success for local runners in the Classic by finishing second in last year's running, before pulling off a repeat of his own in the Sam Huff West Virginia Breeders' Classic. The Jeff Runco-trainee will be pointed to the Charles Town Classic again in 2023, looking to improve on that second-place performance under Charles Town's reigning five-time leading rider Arnaldo Bocachica.

In addition to the Charles Town Oaks (G3), one other unrestricted stakes race on the Classic night undercard — the Robert Hilton Memorial for straight 3-year-olds — received a purse hike to $350,000. The two other unrestricted stakes — the Russell Road and Misty Bennett Pink Ribbon — remain at $250,000.

Since moving the Charles Town Classic and Oaks to the same card in 2020, the blockbuster program has produced three of the four largest single-card handles in track history, with the two largest coming in 2021 and 2022.

“We're incredibly pleased with the business results of the last three Charles Town Classic programs and look forward to ramping up the card this August,” said Charlie McIntosh, Charles Town's Director of Racing Operations. “The quality of the Charles Town Oaks fields have been exceptional and we feel making the Oaks the richest three-year-old filly stakes race in the country will continue that positive momentum for years to come.”

Charles Town's 2023 stakes schedule features 24 stakes races worth an even $4 million in total purses. These totals exclude the West Virginia Breeders' Classics XXXVII card scheduled for October 14th, with purses to be announced at a later date for the state's premier night for West Virginia-breds. For the first time, all non-Futurity or Breeders Classics' state-bred stakes races will be run for $75,000 in 2023. The stakes schedule kicks off on April 15 with the Original Gold Stakes for West Virginia-bred fillies and mares, with seven more state-bred stakes to follow over the course of April, May, June, and July, with four more scheduled for the Charles Town Classic and Oaks undercard.

One other notable change to the stakes program is the renaming of the Eleanor Casey Memorial to the James and Eleanor Casey Memorial, after the recent passing of West Virginia racing icon James W. Casey.

The 2023 racing calendar calls for 164 days of live racing, including a Wednesday through Saturday schedule in January, February, November, and December with racing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday the remainder of the year. Post time for all but Charles Town Classic and Oaks day is 7 p.m. Eastern.
