The British Horseracing Authority's (BHA) Careersinracing team has released a new five-part podcast series – Race to your Career – which showcases the wide range of jobs and development opportunities available across British racing and breeding.

Launched during National Careers Week 2023, the new series covers various aspects of employment, training and careers advice – using the real-life journeys and personal experiences of people working in British racing.

Developed with education partner, Not Going To Uni, each episode focuses on a particular area of the industry, with guests ranging from racing grooms, experienced veterinary officers and marketing professionals, to those at the very start of their careers in racing.

All episodes of Race to your Career are available to listen to now on the main podcast hosting platforms, including Apple and Spotify, or to watch on the Careersinracing YouTube channel.

Anyone inspired and motivated by the podcasts can explore training, apprenticeships and job roles using Careersinracing.com, which has been redesigned to provide users with a better, more engaging experience.

Improvements to the racing industry's dedicated careers website include:

  • Refreshed video content, case studies and inspirational stories

Re-launched this time last year, the Job Board continues to prove immensely popular, with over 35,000 page views and nearly 8,000 users per week, browsing job opportunities across all sectors of the racing industry.

BHA Head of Careers Marketing and Recruitment, Zoe Elliott, said:

Thoroughbred Owner Conference Virtual Series Begins With Panel On Accounting, Tax Considerations

The 2023 Thoroughbred Owner Conference streamed its first panel Tuesday, March 7, with a dive into accounting and tax considerations for Thoroughbred owners. The conference is hosted by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and presented by Bessemer Trust, Stoll Keenon Ogden, and The Green Group. The panel was sponsored by Mersant International.

The panel was moderated by Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView, and the panelists were Len Green, founder and chairman of The Green Group; Jonathan Green, a certified financial planner and manager of D.J. Stable; and Aron Yagoda, Thoroughbred owner and a board member of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association.

The panel covered a broad range of topics, including understanding the cost of ownership, principles of accounting, tracking revenues and expenses, tax considerations, sales, and giving back to the industry.

Attendees were able to ask questions through the Q&A link toward the beginning of the discussion and again at the end of the panel.

The panel began with a discussion on the general costs of owning racehorses and how to budget.

According to Yagoda, to begin you must hire a trainer and understand training costs, which can be about three-quarters to 80% of your monthly bill.

“They [training costs] range from $65 a day to $125 a day depending on where you're racing and what circuit you are racing in, and there are other costs associated with that that you have to take into consideration.” he said.

“You are talking about another anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 a month that constitutes veterinary bills, vanning, blacksmith, travel, and race expenses,” Jon Green said.

“There is really not much price difference between campaigning a $5,000 claiming horse or campaigning a graded stakes winner,” he continued. “The expenses are all almost the same. The fixed costs are almost the same. The only difference is if you have a better horse you are going to spend a little more on investing in stakes nominations and maybe a little bit less in vet fees, but otherwise it costs almost the same amount of money.”

With regard to tax considerations, Len Green explained some of the differences between owning racehorses and other assets, and some of the different types of deductions and expenses associated with horse ownership.

“People who specialize in the business really know how to save your taxes and maximize your deductions, and you really want to be active enough to do each of these things,” Len Green said. “The key to having a chance to make money is to be active and keep records and see where you are and if necessary, pivot and change the way you are doing things.”

The session concluded with a discussion about how owners can give back to the industry.

“The way that we look at it and try to promote it to our clients is that when you buy a horse, you are buying a horse for that horse's lifetime. You are not just buying it for that horse's racing career,” Jon Green said. “If you have an opportunity to repurpose that horse and retrain it to have a second career, we really feel like that's what you should be doing.”

The replay of Tuesday's panel and previous Thoroughbred Owner Conference panels is available at bit.ly/OVVideos.

Nine additional Thoroughbred Owner Conference virtual panels are scheduled for 2023.

The next session will be held April 4 at 2 p.m. ET and will feature expert handicappers discussing the details of a variety of betting options and handicapping your horse's race. A full schedule can be found here: bit.ly/OVSchedule.

There is no registration fee for the 2023 virtual conference series, but registration is required. For more information about the owner conference series, including the schedule of panels and registration, please visit ownerview.com/event/conference or contact Gary Falter at 859.224.2803 or gfalter@jockeyclub.com.

OwnerView is a joint effort spearheaded by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association to encourage ownership of Thoroughbreds and provide accurate information on aspects of ownership such as trainers, public racing syndicates, the process of purchasing and owning a Thoroughbred, racehorse retirement, and owner licensing.

The need for a central resource to encourage Thoroughbred ownership was identified in the comprehensive economic study of the sport that was commissioned by The Jockey Club and conducted by McKinsey & Company in 2011. The OwnerView site was launched in May 2012.

HISA Issues Notice On Bisphosphonates: Owners Encouraged To Consider Screening Before March 27

In advance of the anticipated effective date of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's (HISA) Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) Program on March 27, 2023, the Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (HIWU) calls the Thoroughbred industry's attention to regulations regarding the presence and use of bisphosphonates in Covered Horses.

Bisphosphonates are a class of medication prescribed for managing clinical signs associated with navicular syndrome in horses four years old or above. They also have a history of extra-label use in younger horses. Bisphosphonates may be detected in samples from treated horses for months to years after administration.

The ADMC Program regulations categorize bisphosphonates as a Banned Substance, meaning that they are prohibited from being administered to, or present in, Covered Horses at any time. Covered Horses that test positive for bisphosphonates under the ADMC Program are subject to lifetime ineligibility, and associated Covered Persons may incur an Anti-Doping Rule Violation.

Given the prolonged detection period for bisphosphonates and the fact that their use is permitted in other racing jurisdictions internationally:

HIWU will not pursue disciplinary action against Covered Horses or their associated Covered Person(s) for the presence of bisphosphonates if the Covered Person(s) can provide documentation (e.g., medical records or a positive test result) to HIWU of the administration or presence of bisphosphonates prior to the implementation date of the ADMC Program. In accordance with HISA's requirements for Covered Horses, all medical records, including any relevant test results, must be uploaded to the HISA portal. Additionally, due to the variability of bisphosphonate detection through laboratory analysis, all bisphosphonate findings detected under the ADMC Program will undergo thorough review regardless of the alleged timing of administration.

If owners or horsemen have concerns that their horses may have been administered bisphosphonates prior to March 27, including prior to a sale at public auction domestically or internationally, HISA and HIWU advise them to consider bisphosphonate screenings for these horses before the ADMC Program takes effect.

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act does not enable HISA's ADMC Program to be enforced retroactively for actions occurring prior to its implementation. The detection of administrations from prior to March 27 that violate respective state rules in effect during that time period will be referred to the relevant state regulatory authorities.

While bisphosphonates continue to be permitted in Thoroughbred racehorses in international jurisdictions, any Covered Horse proven to have been administered bisphosphonates after the March 27th implementation date will be subject to lifetime ineligibility, and associated Covered Persons may incur an Anti-Doping Rule Violation.

For questions about the use of bisphosphonates and other substances on the ADMC Prohibited List, stakeholders are encouraged to reach out to HIWU Chief of Science Dr. Mary Scollay at mscollay@hiwu.org.

The Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (HIWU) was established in 2022 by Drug Free Sport International to administer the rules and enforcement mechanisms of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's (HISA) Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) Program. The ADMC Program will create a centralized testing and results management process and apply uniform penalties for violations efficiently and consistently across all American Thoroughbred racing jurisdictions that HISA governs. HIWU will oversee testing, educate stakeholders on the new program, accredit laboratories, investigate potential violations, and prosecute any such violations. For more information, please visit hiwu.org.

Del Mar Announces Record-Tying 2023 Stakes Schedule Worth $8.275 Million

With the 33rd edition of its premier event, the $1,000,000 FanDuel Racing Pacific Classic leading a parade of 39 offerings in 31 days, Del Mar is set to present a record-tying stakes schedule worth $8,275,000 for the 84th season of Thoroughbred sport at its iconic seaside oval beginning on Friday, July 21.

The Grade 1 “Classic” at a mile and one-quarter will top a sparkling five-graded-stakes afternoon on Saturday, Sept. 2, that includes the Grade 2, $300,000 Del Mar Handicap and the Grade 2, $300,000 Del Mar Mile.

All told that track has slated six Grade 1 races over the course of an eight-week summer stand, as well as six Breeders' Cup “Win & You're In” tests that each guarantee a spot in the starting gate for their major counterparts during the two-day, $28 million end-of-season championship spectacular that will be held this year at Santa Anita.

The shore track again will feature eight black type events strictly for California-breds carrying total purses of $1,150,000. Further, it has 19 stakes on its popular Jimmy Durante Turf Course along with five overnight stakes, each with a value of $100,000.

“We've got a stakes schedule that mirrors our record program of last year,” noted Del Mar vice president and racing secretary David Jerkens. “We made a couple of very minor tweaks, but otherwise it's the same offerings at the same value that our horsemen and women found especially pleasing last year.”

As it has for decades, the $100,000 Caesars Sportsbook Oceanside Stakes for 3-year-olds on the grass will kick off the proceedings on opening day. And closing day – Sunday, Sept. 10 – once more will be headlined by the Grade 1, $300,000 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs, the championship event for 2-year-olds at the session.

The track's six Grade 1 affairs are led by the FanDuel Racing Pacific Classic, of course, but also include the $400,000 Bing Crosby Stakes for older horses at six furlongs on Saturday, July 29; the $400,000 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile and one-sixteenth on Saturday, August 5; the $300,000 Del Mar Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at nine furlongs on the turf on Saturday, August 19; the $300,000 FanDuel Racing Del Mar Debutante for 2-year-old fillies at seven furlongs on Saturday, September 9, and the Del Mar Futurity.

Del Mar's six “Win & You're In” races are the Bing Crosby (providing guaranteed entrance to the $2-million Breeders' Cup Sprint); the Clement L. Hirsch ($2-million Breeders' Cup Distaff); $250,000, Grade 2 Pat O'Brien Stakes at seven furlongs on Saturday, Aug. 26 ($1-million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile); FanDuel Racing Pacific Classic ($6-million Breeders' Cup Classic); Del Mar Handicap at 11 furlongs on turf ($4-million Breeders' Cup Turf); and the $150,000, Grade 3 Green Flash Handicap at five furlongs on turf on Saturday, Sept. 2 ($1-million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint).

The stakes schedule features the five stakes day on September 2, as noted, but also has a triple header (including the Grade 1 FanDuel Sports Debutante and the $250,000, Grade 2 John C. Mabee Stakes) on Saturday, Sept. 9, and nine other days when there will be stakes doubleheaders.

The historic track will open its season with a three-day weekend (July 21, 22, 23), then have five four-day weeks (Thursday through Sunday), a five-day week (including Labor Day Monday, Sept. 4), then finish with a Friday-through-Sunday weekend (Sept. 8, 9 10).
