Record-Sized Catalogue Available for Texas 2YO Sale

A catalogue featuring 186 horses has been released for the 2023 Texas 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, the highest number cataloged for a 2-year-old sale in Texas Thoroughbred Association (TTA) sales history. The sale will be held Apr. 5 at Lone Star Park with a breeze show scheduled for Apr. 3.

Last year's edition of the sale was topped by Free Drop Maddy (Free Drop Billy), who was consigned by Carl Deville and brought $200,000 from Mansfield Racing. The now-sophomore has since won four black-type events, including the Texas Thoroughbred Association Futurity at Lone Star and the Louisiana Champions Day Lassie S. at Fair Grounds.

“This is an impressive catalog for our 2023 2-year-old sale,” TTA Sales Director Foster Bridewell said. “It's deep, it's full of pedigree and stallion power, and we're proud to offer the depth and quality come April that hasn't been seen around here in a decade.”

Bridewell continued: “The commitment of our consignors, breeders, and owners to bring such quality athletes and pedigrees to our sale is unmatched.”

The catalogue is highlighted by a number of leading sires, including Bernardini, Bolt d'Oro, City of Light, Classic Empire, Good Magic, Justify, Kantharos, Malibu Moon, Midshipman, Munnings, and Practical Joke, as well as a number of first-crop stallions. Regional stallions are also represented, including leading Texas stallion Bradester and Louisiana's El Deal.

Paper catalogs will be available shortly. Visit ttasales.com to view the interactive catalogue, a full downloadable catalogue, and expected supplements.

TTA 2YO Sale Sees Increases in Average, Median

Wednesday's Texas Thoroughbred Association (TTA) 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale closed with an uptick in average and median, as well as gross. A total of 88 horses sold for $3,050,700 with an average of $34,667, up from an average of $32,671 in 2021. The median also rose to $28,000, compared to $20,000 in 2021.

“We're obviously thrilled to see such strong trade in our 2-year-old market,” said TTA sales director Foster Bridewell. “We can't thank the owners and consignors enough for sending us quality horses to sell and we're fortunate that so many buyers showed up in a big way. I think it's a sign of just how strong racing is in Texas, thanks to the increased purses and incentives for owners and breeders.”

The sales topper was a Free Drop Billy filly, who sold for $200,000. Consigned by Carl Deville, the Louisiana-bred is out of Solo Buena (Half Ours) and had worked in :10.2 at Monday's under tack show. Mansfield Racing purchased the bay, who hails from the extended family of champion Blushing John (Blushing Groom {Fr}). The top-priced colt at $125,000 was by McCraken out of Conjuress (Indian Charlie), who also worked in :10.2 and was also purchased by Mansfield Racing. Pike Racing, agent, who consigned the Kentucky-bred colt, was the leading consigner at the sale with total sales of $664,000.

Texas Summer Yearling Sale Slated for Aug. 29

The Texas Thoroughbred Association's 2022 Texas Summer Yearling Sale will be held Aug. 29, the TTA announced Monday. The sale, co-presented by Lone Star Park, will be held at the sale pavilion at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.

“After the results of our 2021 yearling sale, we have a lot to look forward to with the 2022 Texas Summer Yearling Sale,” TTA Sales Director Foster Bridewell said. “The yearling market in Texas in 2021 was strong, thanks to our consignors, who brought quality physicals and pedigree to our sale, and thanks to the buyers who certainly loved the individuals on the grounds.”

The 2021 sale concluded with an increase in the total number of yearlings cataloged and sold, as well as a positive jump in the average and median sale prices. Texas sales graduates are eligible for the Texas Thoroughbred Association Futurity at Lone Star Park at two and the new Texas Thoroughbred Association Derby and Oaks for 3-year-olds at Sam Houston.

“There's really never been a better time to sell and buy racehorses in the Texas,” Bridewell said. “Thanks to the passage of HB 2460 in 2019, the Texas horse industry benefits from the infusion of $25 million per year, increasing purses and Accredited Texas-bred incentive awards. This is all thanks to Texas lawmakers who support racing in this state; it's truly a great time to bring horses to Texas to sell and for buyers to find quality prospects.”

The entry deadline for the 2022 Texas Summer Yearling Sale is June 24, and consignment forms are now available at www.ttasales.com.

132 Juveniles Catalogued for Texas Sale

A total of 132 juveniles have been catalogued for the Texas 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale to be held Apr. 6 at Lone Star Park. The auction's under-tack show will be held Apr. 4.

“We tried to put together a diverse catalog with something for just about everyone,” TTA Sales Director Foster Bridewell said. “Our consignors really had a lot to offer, in terms of stallion strength and pedigree, and we are grateful they saw fit to sell with us. We're excited about the book we've put together and think our buyers will be too.”

Among sires with 2-year-olds in the catalogue are Arrogate, Connect, Constitution, Distorted Humor, Ghostzapper, Hard Spun, Kantharos, Malibu Moon, Runhappy, and Sky Mesa, as well as first-year stallions Accelerate, Always Dreaming, Army Mule, Cloud Computing, Good Samaritan, McCracken, Mendelssohn, Mo Town, and Tapwrit. Offspring from some of Texas's leading stallions, including Bradester, Competitive Edge, Eagle, and Too Much Bling, are also expected to go through the auction ring.

“The catalogue is strong, family wise,” Bridewell added. “We have horses that are out of stakes winners, by stakes winners, by proven and new stallions, half-siblings to stakes winners or stakes-placed horses, and half to Texas champions. We couldn't ask for a better group and can't thank our consignors enough for bringing them to Texas.”

The interactive catalog is available now at www.ttasales.com. Supplements to the catalogue are expected.
