Texas Winter Mixed Sale Attracts Better Than 125 Horses

The Texas Winter Mixed Sale, staged in partnership by the Texas Thoroughbred Association and Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie, has attracted more than 125 entries. The first standalone Texas Winter Mixed Sale since 2011 will take place Sunday, Dec. 6, at 1 p.m. at the sales pavilion located on the Lone Star backstretch.

“Because of increased purses and breeding incentives in Texas, and the overall strength of racing in the Southwest region, we saw the need to bring this sale back,” said Tim Boyce, sales director. “Even though we knew there would be demand from consignors and buyers, we didn’t anticipate this many entries or the interest we’ve already seen from potential buyers. That’s a good sign for how things are growing in this region.”

The sale will kick off with broodmares followed by weanlings, yearlings and horses of racing age. As it was for the Texas Summer Yearling Sale this past August, internet bidding will also be available for the Mixed Sale.

Sam Houston Race Park Releases Expanded Stakes Schedule For 2021 Season

Sam Houston Race Park will not only offer an expanded live racing season, but additional stakes throughout its 2021 Thoroughbred meet, which begins on Friday, Jan. 8.

The 2021 Thoroughbred Stakes schedule will offer $2.4 million in purses, up from $1.8 million in 2020. The Houston Racing Festival will take place on Sunday, Jan. 31, headlined by the Houston Ladies Classic (G3) and the John B. Connally Turf (G3). Inaugurated in 2013, the Houston Ladies Classic was formed to serve as the marquee racing event for Sam Houston's Thoroughbred meet. Now in its ninth running, the mile and one-sixteenth Houston Ladies Classic anchors the Houston Racing Festival, which also includes the Grade 3, $200,000 John B. Connally Turf Cup, the $100,000 Frontier Utilities Turf Sprint, the $75,000 Jersey Lilly Turf Stakes and $75,000 Stonerside Sprint. The $200,000 Texas Turf Mile for 3-year-olds was added last year and drew a highly competitive field of ten.

Opportunities for Texas-breds are plentiful in the upcoming meet. The 2021 Thoroughbred racing season will feature 14 Texas-bred stakes. Additionally, all seven stakes races on Texas Champions Day have been increased from $75,000 to $100,000.

Frank Hopf, Sam Houston Race Park's Senior Director of Racing Operations, explains that while the Houston Racing Festival continues to garner national attention, rewarding Texas Thoroughbreds is also a very important priority.

“We have worked closely with the Texas Thoroughbred Association and are pleased with the increases for our Texas-bred stakes in 2021,” said Hopf. “Heading into 2021, we want to build on the positive strides made prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and take a lead role in improving racing in Texas.”

The 2021 Thoroughbred season will conclude on April 3 with three new $75,000 stakes added to the racing program.

James Leatherman will serve as racing secretary for the Thoroughbred live racing season and 23-day Sam Houston Race Park Quarter Horse meet which will run from Friday, April 23 through Saturday, June 12. Stall applications for the upcoming Thoroughbred season are due by Wednesday, November 6. The Sam Houston Race Park barn area will open on Saturday, November 28 with training hours set to commence on Tuesday, December 1. The first condition book is available on equibase.com and further information about the season can be accessed at shrp.com.

Texas Summer Yearling And Horses Of Racing Age Sale Posts Across-The-Board Gains

The Texas Summer Yearling and Horses of Racing Age Sale, held jointly by the Texas Thoroughbred Association and Lone Star Park, posted a big gain in gross sales on Monday. The average and median also increased compared to last year, even with a much larger catalog on tap this year.

The sale was held in the sales pavilion at Lone Star Park with appropriate safety measures in place, and online bidding was offered for the first time at the Texas sale.

For the yearling session, 106 head from 137 offered sold for a total of $1,347,700, compared to 42 of 65 sold last year for $506,000. That represents a 166.34 percent increase in gross sales. The average this year was $12,714, up 5.5 percent from last year's $12,048, and the median rose to $5,100 from $5,000 for an increase of 2 percent. The buyback rate this year was 22.6 percent compared to 35.3 percent last year.

The format was altered this year to include a horses of racing age session, in part because of the cancellation of the 2-year-olds in training sale earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The session had 15 horses sell from 18 offered for a total of $162,500 and an average of $10,833.

Last year's summer auction had a traditional mixed session with 12 sold for $31,100.

“The results of this sale were strong on their own, and especially against the backdrop of a health pandemic,” said Tim Boyce, sales director. “With twice as many yearlings as last year, the fact that our average and median still went up shows that there's a lot of demand in this region for quality stock. We were pleased with the response to online bidding as well.”

Al Pike, agent, bought the three highest priced horses, topped by Hip 218, a Louisiana-bred colt from the first crop of Grade 1 winner Klimt. Consigned by Eaton Sales, agent for Coteau Grove Farms LLC, the January foal is the first out of the unraced Ghostzapper mare Ms. Character and sold for $120,000.

Pike also signed the ticket on the Hip 203, who sold for $100,000 as the top filly and second-highest overall. Consigned by H & E Ranch, Roger Daly, agent, the Kentucky-bred daughter is also from the first crop of a Grade 1 winner in Classic Empire. She is out of Just Like Pop, by Unbridled's Song, whose only foal to race is a multiple winner.

Pike also got the third-highest price from H & E Ranch and Daly with Hip 243, a Kentucky-bred Lemon Drop Kid colt for $70,000.

From the horses of racing age session, the top price was Hip 16, an unraced 2-year-old filly by Twirling Candy. Martin Racing Stable LLC bought her for $27,000 from Eaton Sales, agent.

Eaton Sales, agent, participating in the Texas sale for the first time, topped the list of consignors with gross sales of $454,800 from 28 sold. Roger Daly, agent, had the top average with eight sold for an average of $31,800.

Klimt Colt Tops TTA Yearling & HORA Sale

Yearling-to-juvenile reseller Al Pike had a busy day Monday, acquiring the three highest-priced offerings at the single-session Texas Thoroughbred Association’s Yearling and Horses of All Ages Sale at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie.

Pike went to $120,000 for the day’s most expensive lot, the Eaton Sales-consigned hip 218. From the first crop of former ‘TDN Rising Star’ and current Darby Dan stallion Klimt (Quality Road), the Jan. 30 foal was bred in Louisiana by Keith and Ginger Myers’s Coteau Grove Farms LLC and is out of the unraced Ms. Character (Ghostzapper), a half-sister to Coteau Grove’s seven-time stakes winner and Grade III-placed Little Ms Protocol (El Corredor); as well as SW Union Builder (Yankee Gentleman) and SP Coteau Rouge (Tale of the Cat). This is also the female family of top GI Kentucky Derby hopeful Art Collector (Bernardini).

Pike also acquired the afternoon’s other six-figure youngster, going to an even $100,000 for hip 203, a first-crop daughter of champion Classic Empire (Pioneerof the Nile). The Mar. 1-foaled bay filly is out of the unraced Just Like Pop (Unbridled’s Song), who was acquired by breeder H & E Ranch for $55,000 in foal to Creative Cause at the 2018 OBS Winter Mixed Sale. That produce, a filly now named Best Cause, fetched $150,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July sale. Just Like Pop is out of four-time black-type winner Amazing Buy (High Yield), a half-sister to MGSW and Sovereign Award winner Alpha Bettor (Alphabet Soup). Hip 203 was consigned by Roger Daly.

Pike’s also struck for hip 243, parting with $70,000 for a colt by Lemon Drop Kid out of Sallie’s Memory (Holy Bull). Also consigned by Daly on behalf of H & E Ranch, the Feb. 6 foal is a full-brother to the stakes-placed juvenile filly Shaken Memories and a half to SW Jamaican Memories (Slew City Slew).

Conducted with COVID-19 safety protocols in place and offering an online bidding component, the sale was patronized by the likes Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, Set-Hut LLC of former NFL quarterback Jake Delhomme and Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch. A total of 106 horses were reported as sold from 137 through the ring for an average of $12,714, up by 5.5% over last year’s $12,048. The median was up 2% at $5,100. Eaton Sales, agent, participating in the Texas sale for the first time, topped the list of consignors with gross sales of $454,800 from 28 sold. Roger Daly, agent, had the top average with eight sold for an average of $31,800.

“The results of this sale were strong on their own, and especially against the backdrop of a health pandemic,” said Tim Boyce, sales director. “With twice as many yearlings as last year, the fact that our average and median still went up shows that there’s a lot of demand in this region for quality stock.
