Gear Up in Good Order For Dante

Group 1 winner Gear Up (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) is training well in advance of a start in the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante S. at York on May 13, trainer Mark Johnston has revealed. The bay colt broke his maiden at York last July and added the G3 Acomb S. there in August. Only fourth in Newmarket's G2 Royal Lodge S. on Sept. 26, Gear Up handled heavy ground with a win over 10 furlongs in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud on Oct. 24.

“He's got all the credentials, and we're really looking forward to it,” said Johnston. “It's almost a case of whatever happens [this week] he'll be going to the Derby after.

“We went close with Dee Ex Bee a few years ago [runner-up at Epsom in 2018], but this horse is a Group 1 winner already and he'd be the first of those I've run in the Derby I think–I haven't had that many runners in it all told.

“He did well over the winter. He was extremely green when he won at York first time–but when he went back for the Acomb nobody was expecting him to step up quite the way he did.

“Franny [Norton] said after the Royal Lodge that it wasn't his running–and he called James Doyle before the French race to tell him to make plenty of use of him.”

Subjectivist Camp Mulling Gold Cup Outing

Group 1 winner Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), a winner of the G2 Dubai Gold Cup on Mar. 27, is likely to start next in the G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in June. Successful at the highest level in the Prix Royal-Oak last fall, the Dr. Walker colourbearer also saluted in the G3 March S. on Aug. 29 and earlier in the season won the Listed Glasgow S.

“He had a fantastic campaign last year–we always thought of him as a genuine St Leger horse, but that was probably his most disappointing effort through the year,” said trainer Mark Johnston's son Charlie. “We campaigned him quite aggressively last year–he ran in the Gordon, the Voltigeur, the March and then the Leger, so it was a busy summer.

“There is an element to say he's best when he's fresh–but he's also just a bigger, stronger horse this year. Last year you could struggle to keep condition on him, but this year he's taken all the work we have thrown at him. Plan A was Saudi, and we were annoyed he didn't get in there–we couldn't fathom the logic.

“I know Phil Smith framed the staying race as a handicap–and because of weight-for-age, it worked against him. But there were horses running that had been getting beaten in handicaps and went off 50-1, while he'd won a Group 1 on his last start. As soon as he didn't get in, as he was half-ready in early February, Meydan was an opportunity for another big pay day–and it was a fantastic performance.”

Looking forward to the European season Johnston continued, “We've given him a Yorkshire Cup entry–but one of the main attractions to Dubai was that he had no penalty for his Group 1, while he would have in a Sagaro, Henry II or Yorkshire Cup.

“I think Plan A will be to go straight to Ascot, because we've proved we can have him in the form of his life fresh. I think the two he'll definitely go to are Ascot and Goodwood in the summer.

“There's certainly lots to look forward to. He nearly won at Royal Ascot (King George V S., last year), and Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) only just caught him at Goodwood–both of those were over a mile-and-a-half. We always said he would get better with age.”

Darley Announces 2021 European Roster

The Darley Europe roster, featuring new stallions Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}-Nightime {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal-Lava Flow {Ire}, by Dalakhani {Ire}) and Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal-Winters Moon {Ire}, by New Approach {Ire}), has been announced. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, most fees have been reduced, some by 25% or more.

Leading the overall roster is veteran Dubawi (Ire) (Dubai Millennium {GB}), who will stand for £250,000 at Dalham Hall Stud. The sire of four Group 1 winners this year along, including the brilliant MG1SW Ghaiyyath, his progeny have struck an additional 17 times at black-type level in 2020.

Outstanding juvenile Pinatubo’s fee is £35,000 at Dalham Hall. Rated the best juvenile in Europe in the past 25 years, the 2019 English/Irish highweight’s undefeated 2-year-old season included victories in the G1 National S., and G1 Dewhurst S. At three, he added the G1 Prix Jean Prat, ran second in the G1 Prix du Moulin and G1 St. James’s Palace S. and was Classic placed with a third in the G1 2000 Guineas.

The aforementioned Ghaiyyath is priced at €30,000 at Kildangan Stud in Ireland. The four-time Group 1 winner struck three times at the highest level this term, collecting scintillating victories in the G1 Coronation Cup, G1 Eclipse S., and the G1 Juddmonte International. French champion juvenile Earthlight will also hold court at Kildangan. Undefeated at two, the 2019 G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. hero’s fee has been set at €20,000.

“We know that breeders are facing unpredictable times and have reflected this in our fees, in Europe and the United States,” said Liam O’Rourke, Director of Stud, Stallions & Breeding at Darley. We’ve aimed to be supportive in our approach for 2021 and we trust breeders can take advantage of what we believe is our strongest roster ever–yet one that is keenly priced.

“We are thankful to all the breeders who have used our stallions in the past and we look forward to offering them the best opportunities for the future. We have three very exciting new stallions joining the ranks, giving us every confidence that 2021 and beyond will see more success.”

Of the established stallions, Night of Thunder (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), whose oldest foals are three, has continued to enhance his reputation, with 10 black-type winners on the year, half of them at the group level. His fee has been increased at Kildangan to €75,000.

Kildangan veteran Teofilo (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) has enjoyed a successful year at stud, his 12 stakes winners featuring six Group 1 winners alone ranging from G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud victor Gear Up (Ire), to G1 Prix Royal Oak hero Subjectivist (GB) and G1 Melbourne Cup winner Twilight Payment (Ire). He is priced at €30,000.

Expecting his first foals in 2021, MG1SW Too Darn Hot (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) will command £45,000 at Dalham Hall, while the veteran Group 1 sire New Approach (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is listed as private. Also at Dalham Hall, both Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), whose oldest foals are 3-year-olds this term and former shuttle stallion Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic) are both at £20,000. Champion Cracksman (GB) (Frankel {GB}) will have yearlings of 2021 and is priced at £17,500.

Rounding out the Dalham Hall roster are Farhh (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) at a private fee, G1 Derby winner Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) at £14,000, Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) at £12,500, Territories (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), the sire of two black-type winners in his first crop, is at £10,000, Postponed (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is at £7,500 and both Charming Thought (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Outstrip (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) are valued at £4,000.

MG1SW Blue Point (Ire) (Shamardal), who covered his first book of mares this spring, will stand for €40,000 alongside fellow Kildangan resident and top miler Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) at €17,500. For €10,000 apiece, breeders can access Belardo (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire})-already the sire of three stakes winners in his first crop–and Profitable (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), while roster veteran Raven’s Pass (Elusive Quality) is €7,500 and Buratino (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus})’s fee has been set at €5,000. Exceed and Excel (Aus) (Danehill) will not be shuttling from his Australian base in 2021.

In France, a quartet of stallions are standing at Haras du Logis. Cloth of Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) who has his first yearlings next year, is at €7,000, while Ultra (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}), set for his first runners in 2021, is €5,000. The pair of Bow Creek (Ire) (Shamardal) and Hunter’s Light (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will both command €4,000. The former has first 3-year-olds and the latter has first 4-year-olds next year.

Added Darley Director of Stallions Sam Bullard, “It is a source of great pride that the best horse in the world this year and the best 2-year-old for a generation are not just retiring to Darley having raced for Godolphin, but are themselves the sons of Darley stallions. That, and the value we are offering to breeders, makes us very optimistic about the future.

“While 2020 has undoubtedly been a challenge, there has been remarkable resilience in parts of the yearling market, and buyers have shown great confidence in the product of European breeders’ labours.

“We are confident that, with the support of our breeders and their mares, the Darley stallions will continue to breed the star horses of the future.”

Teofilo’s Subjectivist Makes All In the Royal Oak

Set against the gloom of a damp autumn day, Sunday’s G1 Prix Royal-Oak belonged to the Brits as Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) made all under Joe Fanning to take the ParisLongchamp feature. Always content on the front end as he had been when registering a 15-length success in similarly testing conditions in Goodwood’s G3 March S. Aug. 29, the 6-1 shot drifted left into the centre of the track up the home straight but was as resolute as could be expected of a Mark Johnston representative. At the line, the second group 1 winner of the weekend in France for the stable and sire had two lengths to spare over fellow 3-year-old and 11-10 favourite Valia (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), with the 2018 winner Holdthasigreen (Fr) (Hold That Tiger) clinging gamely to third place 2 1/2 lengths behind. “He was very brave and we knew he would enjoy the ground, so I was determined to ride him that way,” jockey Joe Fanning explained. “He was a little bit keen going to post, but once he got in front he pricked his ears and was fine. I was trying to save a bit throughout and when I got to the straight he started to lug a bit left with me and I was worried he’d throw it away. He’s never done it before, but has a bent front shoe so whether that has something to do with it, I’m not sure. He’s a tough stayer and he’s improving.”

A day after the stable’s similarly cheap purchase Gear Up (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) had prevailed in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, Subjectivist was rounding off the current season in style for the Middleham trainer who has made no secret of his love of the stayers’ program. While he has had to endure near-misses in most of Britain’s major “Cup” events in recent times, this latest recruit is unexposed over marathon trips and could be one to provide some more heydays in the category in 2021. Runner-up in the Listed Stonehenge S. over a mile at Salisbury last August, the bay has progressed with each start since moving to middle distances as a 3-year-old and on his third outing captured the 11-furlong Listed Glasgow S. at Hamilton July 16. Third in the G3 Gordon S. at Goodwood July 30 and seventh in York’s G2 Great Voltigeur S. Aug. 19, he moved up to 14 furlongs to dominate the March before finishing seventh in a strong renewal of Doncaster’s Sept. 12 G1 St Leger from which three winners had already emerged before Sunday.

Subjectivist is the third foal out of the triple listed-placed Reckoning (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), with her second being this stable’s Sir Ron Priestley (GB) (Australia {GB}) who also took the March S. before finishing runner-up in the St Leger. Also responsible for the recent G2 Rockfel S. third Alba Rose (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}), she is fast establishing a formidable reputation as a producer of note. Kin to the GIII My Charmer H. runner-up Hope Cross (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), she is a granddaughter of Aspiration (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) who is a full-sister to the G1 Gran Criterium hero and G1 Irish Derby runner-up Sholokhov (Ire). Connected to the G1 Irish Derby and G1 Coronation Cup hero Soldier of Fortune (Ire) (Galileo {Ire), the G1 Dewhurst S. winner Intense Focus (Giant’s Causeway) and the G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy), Reckoning’s yearling filly is by Ulysses (Ire) while she also has a colt foal by Roaring Lion.
