Godolphin’s Eternal Hope Supplemented To Betfred Oaks

Eternal Hope (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who won the Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial earlier this month for Godolphin, has been supplemented at a cost of £30,000 to Friday's G1 Betfred Oaks.

Trained by Charlie Appleby, she gave a good account of herself in her Saturday morning work, and her addition brings the Oaks nominees up to 15. Third at Wolverhampton in her debut in February, she won a 10-furlong Chelmsford maiden later that month. At Lingfield, she defeated another potential Oaks starter in the Group 3-placed Be Happy (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), one of six entries for Aidan O'Brien and Coolmore. Part of that sextet is 22-length Listed Cheshire Oaks heroine Savethelastdance (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who won by an almost unbelievable margin earlier in May.

John and Thady Gosden run both listed winner Roaring Lion (GB) (Roaring Lion) and G3 Musidora S. heroine Soul Sister (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Final declarations will be made on Wednesday morning.

Subjectivist In Good Order After Saudi Start, But Plans Up In The Air

Dual Group 1 winner Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), who was making his first start in over 600 days in the G3 Red Sea Turf H. on the Saudi Cup undercard on Saturday, “seems fine” according to trainer Charlie Johnston.

The Dr. Jim Walker colourbearer, who had won the G1 Prix Royal-Oak, G2 Dubai Gold Cup, and G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in succession in 2020/2021, had made his first start back from an injury-induced layoff at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh on Saturday, although he ran unplaced.

“Of course I was hoping he would run better than he did,” said the Middleham handler. “But given the way race panned out, he was obviously very, very fresh after a long time off and that was more accentuated by the fact that Joe [Fanning] had to light him up a bit to get him over from that draw. Once he'd lit the fuse, there was no going back.”

The 6-year-old entire is a possibility for the G2 Dubai Gold Cup on Mar. 25 or closer to home in the G3 Sagaro S. this spring.

Johnston added, “They were originally due to fly back tomorrow [Wednesday] but that has now been delayed until Friday, so he won't be home until then.

“At the moment he seems fine. We'll get a better handle on things once he's back home, but the initial signs are good, so that's promising at least.

“This delay makes things worse in that there's only four weeks between Saudi and Dubai and now, given the time it's taking to get him home and the time he'd need to leave before the race at Meydan, he'd only be back here for two weeks, so that is obviously going to have to be factored in.

“If he doesn't go to Dubai, something like the Sagaro would seem the obvious next port of call for him, but we'll wait and see the horse when he gets home and speak to Dr. Jim and make a plan from there.”

Crack Stayer Subjectivist Set For Red Sea Turf

Charlie Johnston's Group 1-winning stayer Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) turned in a maintenance gallop at King Abdulaziz Racecourse on Wednesday, ahead of an intended start in the G3 Longines Red Sea Turf H. on the G1 Saudi Cup undercard.

Set to face 12 rivals in the event, the 6-year-old entire has not graced the racecourse since dominating the G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 2021, having injured a tendon in training.

“It has been a very long road, 20 months since this horse saw the racecourse,” said Johnston. “It has been a long journey for the team and one where we've trodden on eggshells for the most of it. So, to see him back in this kind of environment is fantastic. Horses like him don't come around very often. It was getting to that point where you don't really care about the opposition.”

Already a winner of the 2020 G1 Prix Royal Oak, 2021 G2 Dubai Gold Cup, and his Royal Ascot demolition job, Subjectivist appears back to his best following a racecourse gallop at Newcastle earlier this month.

“We wouldn't be here if we didn't think we were ready,” Johnston added. “But at the same time any prep is difficult, but in particular in a situation when you come back from such a serious injury.

“We took him to Newcastle and that was a pretty serious workout. That was the key point, to feel he was in shape to be ready to come here.

“What he did here today was to see him stretch his legs, see that he is fit and well and that he has taken the journey OK. The hard work has been done at home and now it is a case of keeping him wrapped up until Saturday.

“It is very much one day at a time with this horse. Every morning he canters up the gallop, he goes into his box and we check that his leg is still OK.

“I've barely allowed myself to think about Saturday, never mind think beyond Saturday.”
