Making Waves: Daughter Of Ten Sovereigns Strikes At Gulfstream

In this series, the TDN takes a look at notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column is highlighted by the victory of Kalispera at Gulfstream Park.

Ten Sovereigns Filly Delivers In Florida

William Werner's Kalispera (Ire) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}) won her American debut at Gulfstream Park for trainer Brian Lynch earlier this month (video).

A product of the storied Annemarie O'Brien breeding programme, the 3-year-old rattled off a trio of group placings at two in her colours when third in both the G2 Debutante S.,–and G3 Newtownanner Stud S., and second in the G3 Prix d'Aumale for former trainer Joseph O'Brien in September. Sold privately to these connections, the filly is a half-sister to G2 Ridgewood Pearl S. second Emphatic Answer (Ire) (No Nay Never) and G3 Silver Flash S. third La Dolce Vita (Ire) (Caravaggio). The trio are out of placed runner Ask Me Nicely (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who is a half-sister to G1 Dewhurst winner Beethoven (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}).

Kalispera is one of two winners from five (40%) to race in America for her Coolmore sire whose eldest foals are now 3-year-olds. The winner Irish Gent (Ire) was second in the Listed Atlantic Beach S., while the placed Loterie (Ire) was runner-up in the Listed Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf S.

By Any Other Name

Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and MyRacehorse's Forever Rose (Ger) (Cracksman {GB}) won at Tampa for trainer Greg Sacco this month (video).

Making her third start, the Gestut Etzean-bred bay was a €49,000 Baden-Baden yearling turned €420,000 Arqana May 2-year-old when picked up by Stephen Hillen. Her dam Forever Beauty (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}), a winner at two and listed placed over a mile in Germany at four, has a juvenile filly named Fabulous (Ger) (Areion {Ger}) and a yearling colt called Fawkes (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}) still to come. Forever Beauty is a half-sister to a trio of stakes winners led by G1 Deutsches Derby winner Feodora (Ger) (Lord Of England {Ger}).

Darley's Cracksman is now best known as the sire of French wunderkind Ace Impact (Ire), an undefeated Classic-winning victor of the 2023 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. However, Cracksman is not a one-horse sire, as he has six other stakes winners worldwide including G2 Premio Dormello victress Aloa (GB). In the U.S., Forever Rose is the first winner from two to race for her sire.

Long Live The King

Boardshorts Breeding and Racing's King Julien (Kingman {GB}) graduated at Gulfstream Park at second asking on Jan. 7 (video).

Trained by Brian Lynch, the Glen Hill Farm-bred dark bay sold for $300,000 as a Keeneland September yearling when picked up by Taylor Creek. Dam Deer Valley (Speightstown), who won Monmouth's Crank It Up S., is already responsible for stakes winner Wide West (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), and she was covered by Good Magic last spring. Crisp (El Corredor), a half-sister to Deer Valley and a winner of the GI Santa Anita Oaks, is the dam of star Japanese dirt performer Danon Pharoah (Jpn) (American Pharoah).

Juddmonte's Kingman has sired 36 winners from 59 runners (61%) in the US and Canada. His eight stakes winners are anchored by Domestic Spending (GB), a winner of three Grade I races; and Grade II winners Technical Analysis (Ire), who was second in the GI Diana S. and GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup, and Serve The King (GB), who was second in the GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic S.

Repeat Winners

Cheyenne Stable's Ozara (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) added a first listed victory to her resume in the Ginger Brew S. at Gulfstream Park at the beginning of the year for trainer Christophe Clement (video). She first featured in this column after a win at Saratoga in August.

Another repeat winner is Zoustar (Aus) filly Lunar Impact (GB), who races for D K Racing, LLC, Qatar Racing, LLC, Radley Equine, Inc., Rick Gold and Dave Odmark. She won her second race at Santa Anita near the start of January for trainer Dan Blacker (video).

Making Waves: Memorable Moment For Godolphin Classic Winner

In this series, the TDN takes a look at notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column is highlighted by the victory of Mawj in the GI Queen Elizabeth II Cup S. presented by Dixiana Farms at Keeneland last weekend.

Classic Filly Comes Good At Keeneland

Godolphin homebred Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), already a winner of the G1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, doubled her top-level tally in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. at Keeneland on Saturday and gave trainer Saeed bin Suroor his 500th group/graded win in the process (video).

A half-sister to Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), an Eclipse Award champion in the U.S. and soon to be a Darley stallion, as well as the stakes winner Modern News (GB) (Shamardal) who was twice group placed, Mawj is followed by a juvenile filly by Mastercraftsman (Ire) and a weanling filly by Dubawi. Her dam is a half-sister to G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner and sire Ultra (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}), and her great granddam is the Italian champion Proskona (Mr. Prospector).

One of 18 worldwide Group 1 winners for her former Darley reverse shuttle sire, Mawj is one of three Grade I winners in the U.S. after GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner-turned-sire Outstrip (GB) and Mischief Magic (Ire), who landed the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. Exceed And Excel's 42 Stateside runners have resulted in 23 winners (55%) and 11 stakes winners (26%).

Luck O' The Irish For Ten Sovereigns Colt

Robert and Lawana Low's Irish Gent (Ire) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}) became the 24th winner for his sire at third asking when taking an off-turf affair during the Belmont at the Big A meeting for trainer Todd Pletcher (video).

Bred by Denis McCarthy, the dark bay made €130,000 as a Goffs November foal when purchased by Pier House Stud. his value rose appreciably to €500,000 when he was sent back through that ring during the Orby Sale, where Jacob West picked out the son of Indigo Butterfly (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) on behalf of the Lows. The third and last reported foal from his dam is a relative of G1 Jebel Hatta hero Dream Castle (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and that gelding's full-sister With The Moonlight (Ire), who was a three-time group/graded winner and third in the GI E. P. Taylor S.

Coolmore's Ten Sovereigns already has three stakes winners in his first crop of 2-year-olds internationally. Represented by just three runners in the U.S. so far, Irish Gent is the stallion's first American winner.

Brant Runner Collects In New York

Peter Brant homebred Francesco Clemente (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) won a Belmont at the Big A contest for Chad Brown on Thursday (video).

A winner of his first three starts for John and Thady Gosden in the UK last year, the White Birch Farm-bred earned black-type with a second in the Listed Festival S. in May. The half-brother to the multiple stakes winner and multiple group-placed Abingdon (Street Cry {Ire}) was switched to the U.S. after a start in the Listed Wolferton S. at Royal Ascot. His dam Justlookdon'touch (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is a half-sister to the influential champion Islington (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), and produced Dubawi full-siblings as her latest foals–a 3-year-old colt named Howeitat (Ire) and a 2-year-old filly christened Birkin (Ire).

Darley's Dubawi now has 37 winners from 77 runners in the U.S. (48%). His 19 North American stakes winners (25%) are anchored by three-time Grade I winner In Italian (GB).

Inquisitively Makes All For Cornwallis Success, First Group Winner For Ten Sovereigns

Wee Sean Gan's Inquisitively (GB) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}–Ballyalla {GB}, by Mind Games {GB}), fresh off a breakthrough score in York's Listed Roses S., continued on the upgrade with a pillar-to-post victory in Friday's Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project Cornwallis S. at Newmarket, becoming the first pattern-race winner for his freshman sire (by No Nay Never).

The 10-3 second choice had hit the board for Ollie Sangster in Royal Ascot's Listed Windsor Castle S., in his penultimate start, and broke sharply from the far-side stall to seize an immediate lead in this five-furlong dash. Unflustered on the front end until shaken up soon after passing the quarter-mile marker, he held a decisive advantage entering the final furlong and was ridden out up the hill to comfortably hold Rosario (GB) (Harry Angel {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths for a career high.

“I wasn't that confident beforehand, but he is a very tough horse,” commented trainer Kevin Philippart de Foy after securing a career high of his own. “He took the lead and grabbed the race from the get go. When I saw three horses in line halfway through the race I was a bit worried, but he breathes very well and relaxes. When William [Buick] asked him to quicken up he put it to bed very nicely. I think he is a five-furlong horse, but we will probably have to try the six [furlongs] later down the line. I feel he has got bags of speed, and he jumped so well today he took a length out of them from the stalls. He was sold to go to Hong Kong, but for the time being he is staying here. I would love to keep him, but we will have to speak to the owner. We've had a couple of Listed winners, but I wanted a Group winner this year and I was very keen to get a 2-year-old Group winner, so it is job done. The next step is a Group 2 or Group 1. The [Nov. 3 GI] Breeders' Cup [Juvenile Turf Sprint] is a possibility and we will have to discuss it, but it is not out of the question.”

Pedigree Notes

Inquisitively, the seventh of eight foals, is one of three scorers produced by a winning half-sister to G2 Temple S. victrix Priceless (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and G2 Mill Reef S. runner-up Doctor Brown (GB) (Dr Fong). He shares his second dam Molly Brown (GB) (Rudimentary) with G3 Chipchase S. victor Aeolus (GB) (Araafa (Ire) and Listed Golden Rose S. third Hezmah (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Molly Brown, in turn, is a half-sister to Listed Premio Nearco victor Stato King (GB) (Statoblest {Ire}) with this being the family of G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup heroine Rebelline (Ire) (Robellino). The March-foaled bay is a half-brother to Listed Cathedral S. and Listed Boadicea S. third Pixieleen (GB) (Pastoral Pursuits {GB}) and a weanling colt by Havana Grey (GB). He is also kin to the dam of last month's Listed Beverley Bullet Sprint winner Kerdos (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}) and the stakes-placed Dark Vintage (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).
