Grimthorpe Steps Downs As Juddmonte Farms’ European Racing Manager

Juddmonte announce Thursday that The Lord “Teddy” Grimthorpe has decided to stand down after 22 years as Juddmonte Farms' racing manager.

As racing manager for Juddmonte's late owner Prince Khalid Abdullah, Grimthorpe managed all Juddmonte's European horses in training and played a leading role in Juddmonte's consistent and sustained success worldwide at the very highest level in racing. Teddy will leave Juddmonte after this year's Royal Meeting.

Taking over the racing manager's role in 1999 he has, during his tenure, worked with 24 European trainers looking after over 3,000 horses in training, of which 1,400 won over 2,400 races including very nearly 100 Group 1 wins. The list of famous horses with which Teddy was involved includes such names as Enable, Frankel, Banks Hill, Rail Link, Special Duty, Workforce, Twice Over, Midday, Oasis Dream and Kingman.

Teddy is currently deputy senior steward of the British Jockey Club and, having been chairman of York Racecourse for nine years, remains on the York Racecourse board.

Teddy Grimthorpe said:

“I have always felt that the time for me to stand down from Juddmonte would be when Prince Khalid was no longer involved. It has been a huge privilege to work for the Prince and his family, and with the outstanding Juddmonte team, which has been so successful for so long. Of course I am sad to leave, but, with the Prince's death two months ago and over 20 years as his racing manager, now is the right time. I leave an organization in great shape which is supreme at what it does, and I have no doubt Juddmonte will continue to thrive and produce top-class homebred thoroughbred horses competing at the highest level on racecourses across the world.”

Douglas Erskine Crum, chief executive of Juddmonte, said:

“On behalf of Prince Khalid's family and all of us past and present at Juddmonte, I thank Teddy for all he has done to help the organization be at the very top of its game year after year. He will be sorely missed and we wish him the very best of good fortune for the future.”

Lord Grimthorpe To Leave Juddmonte

Lord (Teddy) Grimthorpe, who has for 22 years served as racing manager for Juddmonte, will stand down from that position after this year's Royal Ascot meeting. Prince Khalid Abdullah, who founded Juddmonte and began racing horses more than 40 years ago, died aged 84 on Jan. 12.

Since taking up the role in 1999, Grimthorpe has worked with 24 European trainers and overseen 3000 horses in training. Of those, 1400 won over 2400 races, including almost 100 Group 1 wins. The list of champion Grimthorpe was involved with includes Enable (GB), Frankel (GB), Banks Hill (GB), Rail Link (GB), Special Duty (GB), Workforce (GB), Twice Over (GB), Midday (GB), Oasis Dream (GB) and Kingman (GB). After Khalid Abdullah's death, Juddmonte Chief Executive Douglas Erskine Crum said the prince's family was “very committed to keeping Juddmonte as it is going.”

Prior to his appointment with Juddmonte, Grimthorpe worked for the British Bloodstock Agency for more than 20 years. He said he plans to stay involved in the Thoroughbred industry.

“I've just had the most tremendous time,” he said. “It's been an absolute honour and privilege to have worked for Prince Khalid and his family. This just seemed right. I still want to remain active in the industry, and there are some things I want to pursue back in Yorkshire. Life will go on. Obviously I've given it a great deal of thought and I haven't taken the decision lightly. I've been unbelievably lucky, I really have.”

Grimthorpe nominated two standouts among the many champions he has been involved with at Juddmonte.

“When Prince Khalid died and we looked back at the big moments, there were so many extraordinary horses who had won serious Group 1 races who hardly got a mention,” he said. “I think in terms of special moments, though, Frankel looms over everything. Seeing him develop, Sir Henry [Cecil] became a very close friend, as did all the Juddmonte trainers, but it was just the story around Frankel with how ill Henry was.

“Obviously I'm biased, but the day at York with him [the Juddmonte International] was very special–it was a day a lot of people remember. Prince Khalid was there, Henry was very ill, and the crowd were beyond belief. I was waiting for Prince Khalid to arrive–and normally at York when there is a big crowd a lot of it is coaches–but this wasn't, this was a case of people getting in their car to go and see the horse. I've never seen the paddock as crowded–it was like Cheltenham–and of course his his performance was outstanding. People still come up to me to talk about that day.

“Then of course, we've had Enable the last few years. She had the most remarkable personality, and her relationship with Frankie [Dettori] was something special too, which all added to the story.”

Erskine Crum thanked Grimthorpe for his service, saying, “On behalf of Prince Khalid's family and all of us past and present at Juddmonte, I thank Teddy for all he has done to help the organisation be at the very top of its game year after year. He will be sorely missed and we wish him the very best of good fortune for the future.”

Siskin Targeting Breeders’ Cup

Khalid Abdullah’s Siskin (First Defence) is aiming at a run in the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland on Nov. 7, provided ground conditions suit.

“The Breeders’ Cup Mile is under serious consideration,” Juddmonte Racing Manager Teddy Grimthorpe told the TDN. “We’re concerned about two things: one is the amount of rain that’s fallen in Kentucky the last few days; we know he’s a horse that’s best on fast ground so that’s one concern. The other concern is if they continue to race on the turf track leading up to the Breeders’ Cup, if that will impact on the track adversely.

“Those are the main considerations but at the moment the horse is in good form and is aiming towards Keeneland.”

Siskin, the winner of the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and the G1 Phoenix S., is trained by Ger Lyons, who indicated on Nick Luck’s Daily podcast on Wednesday that the horse would be retired at the end of this campaign and stand at stud in Japan. Grimthorpe declined to comment on stud plans. Siskin’s breeding rights were sold in June to an undisclosed group of breeders, with Juddmonte retaining racing rights.

From the immediate family of sires Xaar (GB) and Bated Breath (GB), Siskin was unbeaten in four starts at two last year. After his Curragh Classic score in June Siskin was third in the G1 Sussex S. and fourth in the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp after missing the break in the latter.

International Superstar Enable Retired, To Be Bred To Kingman

Enable, Europe's Horse of the Year in 2017 and 2019, has been retired from racing, and she will be bred to Kingman for the 2021 breeding season.

Douglas Erskine Crum, CEO Juddmonte Farms, said: “After consulting her trainer John Gosden and his racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe, Prince Khalid has decided that Enable will be retired from racing and will now join the Juddmonte broodmare band to be covered by Kingman in 2021.”

She retires from a 19-race career, spanning five seasons, with 15 wins, including 11 Group 1 races and record earnings for a European-trained horse of £10.7 million (US$14,062,824). Enable is most successful performer ever in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe with two wins and a second, an unprecedented three King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and five Oaks (Epsom in race record time, Irish, Yorkshire twice, and Cheshire). She is the only horse to win the Arc and the Breeders' Cup Turf in the same year, achieving that feat in 2018

Enable, a 6-year-old daughter of Nathaniel, was named Europe's Cartier Horse of the Year in 2017 and 2019. The Juddmonte homebred was named Europe's champion 3-year-old filly in 2017, then earned the continent's champion older female title in 2018 and 2019.

Juddmonte racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe said: “She has brought so much joy to everyone who has been involved with her. Her elegance and forceful personality have been nurtured by John and his team at Clarehaven, especially by Imran who has looked after her with such calm and devotion. In her, Frankie found a willing partner to execute her ability on the racecourse. Her CV withstands the closest of inspections, very few can match what she has given to racing.”

Kingman, who also raced as a Juddmonte homebred, is a 9-year-old son of Invincible Spirit who stands at Barnstead Manor Stud in Suffolk, England.

He was named Europe's Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male in 2014 off a campaign that included G1 victories in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, St. James's Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes, and Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard – Jacques Le Marois.

Kingman's most notable runners include St. James's Palace Stakes winner Palace Pier and French 2,000 Guineas winner Persian King.
