Eclipse Buys Into ‘Rising Star’ Annex

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners has acquired a part-interest in recent 'TDN Rising Star' Annex (Constitution) from LNJ Foxwoods, Aron Wellman, Eclipse's managing partner tweeted and then later confirmed via phone Thursday afternoon.

“We're in a fortunate position where we've got a good relationship with the Roth family, with Jaime, and I go way, way back with Alex Solis [III] and Jason Litt, their advisors,” said Wellman. “That existing relationship certainly helped to be able to open the door for the opportunity to buy into the colt.”

Sent off at debut odds of 5-1 in a one-mile Gulfstream maiden Jan. 16, Annex was given a patient ride by Junior Alvarado and hit top gear at the eighth pole, streaking home to graduate in extremely impressive fashion (video). The flashy chestnut earned a very strong 81 Beyer Speed Figure.

“It was really an eye-catching performance,” Wellman said. “I don't think it took any sort of profound opinion to get on the horn and try to see if a horse of his caliber could be added to our stable. I thought it was a very good group of colts that he ran against and the style and manner in which he was able to win the race and show such an electric turn of foot–he came home wicked fast that day, and looked like potentially he had more gears to call upon if Junior Alvarado had asked him to do so.”

He continued, “He comes from a Hall of Fame operation in Bill Mott and you know he is thinking long-term with a colt like Annex. He certainly didn't have him cranked up first time, so we'd like to think there is plenty more there. When a horse flashes that type of natural ability in a debut and especially around two turns at a major venue, those are certainly the kind of horses we want to have as part of our stable and take us to the big races on the big days. Hopefully he is capable of building on what was a very impressive unveiling.”

Eclipse is set to be represented by a pair of runners in both of this weekend's Pegasus races–Largent (Into Mischief) in the Turf and Constitution's son Independence Hall in the main event. Like many judges, Wellman is bullish on the WinStar inmate and that made Annex that much more attractive.

“He's quickly stamped himself as a blue-chip stallion with his first few crops and certainly being associated with Independence Hall helped our cause and it allows us to have some intimate appreciation for Constitution,” he said. “He's shown that he can throw elite performers. This colt is out of a mare by Unbridled's Song and out of a half-sister to the dam of [MGISW] You (You and I), so there is plenty of quality there on the bottom side as well. We hope he continues to go from strength to strength.”

With the first stage of Triple Crown nominations set to close Saturday, Wellman said that the partnership is all but assured to pay up for the series. But he added that neither would it trouble them in any small way to remain on the grass.

“Frankly we bought him with the perspective that he's proven the ability to be a superior turf horse,” he said. “If that's what he turns out to be and can race in the upper echelon of turf races in America, of which there are incredible options with the Turf Triple, et cetera, we are not afraid at all to have a good turf horse.

He added, “We just want a good horse, but obviously the temptation to try a horse with this kind of ability that's already proved he can get two turns is there. But we're not going to be in any rush. He's in phenomenal hands, the LNJ crew has managed him beautifully to posture him for future success and have taken their time with him. If the time comes when Annex earns his opportunity to test the dirt, we're not going to be afraid to do that and we'll certainly be enterprising in that regard. But we just bought him to be a good horse, if that's turf or dirt, it doesn't matter.”

Wellman also provided an update on the stable's Valiance (Tapit). A stakes winner on turf as a 3-year-old, the gray filly broke through with a 6-1 upset of the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. on the main track ahead of a gallant runner-up effort behind likely champion Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) in the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff Nov. 7.

“After the Distaff, we decided we were going to give her some time to recover from her campaign at WinStar Farm,” Wellman explained. “She's been there since the Breeders' Cup, it's been about 70 days now, and we're just about ready to put the tack back on her and gradually get her back into a training pattern. We'll probably give her 30 or 45 days to leg up at WinStar and then she'll join [trainer] Todd [Pletcher] in Florida before heading back up to New York. We're very enthused about her trajectory. Everything about her in terms of versatility is exciting and she's really thrived, even since the Breeders' Cup. She's really turning into a physical specimen and an imposing mare. We've conservatively managed her with the belief that she could turn into an elite filly and thankfully that came to fruition and we're certainly looking forward to another high-class campaign beginning in late spring or early second part of the year.”

Galileo’s High Definition Leaves It Late In the Beresford

In a dramatic edition of The Curragh’s G2 Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford S. on Saturday, Ballydoyle’s TDN Rising Star High Definition (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) produced what is certain to be one of the most talked-about performances of the year as he grasped victory from surefire defeat. In rear early as Seamie Heffernan bided his time, the 9-5 favourite who had also swooped late in a course-and-distance maiden on debut Aug. 22 straightened for home with a yawning gap to close and it was still around five lengths as Monaasib (GB) (Bobby’s Kitten) overhauled Snapraeterea (Ire) (Buratino {Ire}) a furlong from home. Seemingly out of reach moments before, Monaasib came squarely into High Definition’s sights by the time he passed that marker and as he gained some momentum the bay cut back the deficit as jaws dropped in the final yards. At the line, there was a scarcely-believable degree of comfort in the success, which was measured at 3/4 of a length as Snapraeterea surrendered three lengths away in third.

Aidan O’Brien is inclined to wait until next year with the winner, who gave off some of the vibes that Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) had in this in 2017. “He’s lovely and puts away a lot of ground,” he said. “He’s a big rangy horse with a massive big stride and is one to really look forward to. It was the same in his maiden–you would say he’s not going to get there and in the end he’s won easily. I’d say we’ll put him away now. He could start in a Guineas and he looks like he’ll be a middle-distance horse. I was a bit worried about the bend, as he’s never been around one before.”

Providing a 20th success in this important staging post for Ballydoyle, High Definition who at one point traded at 100-1 in-running on the Betfair exchange is a full-brother to last year’s Beresford hero Innisfree (Ire) who went on to finish runner-up in the G1 Futurity Trophy and has yet to be seen in 2020. He was one of the stable’s leading Derby contenders over the winter and it could be that his year-younger full-sibling makes up for his absence in the blue riband next June. High Definition is currently the last known foal out of the Listed Cairn Rouge S. winner and G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial runner-up Palace (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), one of four black-type winners for Lady Icarus (GB) (Rainbow Quest).

Lady Icarus proved a source of class, producing the G3 Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial S. scorer Furner’s Green (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) who was also third in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains, the listed-winning G1 Irish Oaks third Lady Lupus (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) and the listed-winning and G3 Solonaway S. third Mystical Lady (Ire) (Halling). The latter is the dam of three black-type performers for Ballydoyle, headed by the Listed Dee S. winner and G1 Irish Derby and G1 Ascot Gold Cup runner-up Kingfisher (Ire) also by Galileo. The third dam is the high-class Sonic Lady (Nureyev), heroine of the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, G1 Sussex S. and G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp.

Half-Sister to Iridessa Earns Rising Star Tag in Curragh Debut

Coolmore’s hitherto untested Santa Barbara (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), a half-sister to GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine Iridessa (Ire) (Ruler of the World {Ire}), went postward as a 9-2 chance for Saturday’s Irish EBF Median Sires Series Maiden at The Curragh and made a mockery of those odds with a taking display to earn TDN Rising Stardom on debut. Breaking in mid division and remaining there through halfway in the one-mile test, she made eyecatching headway on the bridle along the far-side fence to seize control approaching the final furlong and was pushed out in the closing stages to easily account for Kailash (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) by an impressive 2 1/2 lengths. “I’ve won on two of that family [Iridessa and Order of Australia] and I’d say she could be the best,” said winning rider Seamus Heffernan. “I’d rate her highly.”

Santa Barbara is latest foal and fifth winner for Senta’s Dream (GB) (Danehill), herself one of just two foals produced by GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare and GI Matriarch S. heroine Starine (Fr) (Mendocino) and the March-foaled bay is a half-sister to MG1SW GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf victress Iridessa (Ire) (Ruler of the World {Ire}). Starine, herself a half-sister to G3 Prix Minerve placegetter Pearlescence (Pleasantly Perfect), is out of a half-sister to the dam of Listed Criterium du Bequet third Weld Elven (Fr) (Kendor {Fr}).

‘Rising Stars’ Account for Day’s Top Two Sellers

Yearlings by a pair of this country’s most prominent sires and each the produce of ‘TDN Rising Stars’ sold minutes apart late during the second session at Keeneland September to close the day as the top two lots. First through the ring was hip 435, a son of Tapit out of Tara’s Tango (Unbridled’s Song), who brought the hammer down at an even $2 million. The colt will be campaigned by a powerhouse partnership including Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Robert LaPenta, Gainesway and Ron Winchell. Stonestreet will also retain an interest. Just three hips later, a filly by Into Mischief out of ‘Rising Star’ Taylor S (Medaglia d’Oro) bred by Albaugh Family Stable fetched $1.9 million. Hip 435 was bred by Stonestreet, who raced Tara’s Tango to a victory in the GI Santa Margarita S. The mare’s Medaglia d’Oro colt made $2.15 million from Godolphin here last year. Hip 438 is out of the GSP Taylor S, a daughter of Miss Macy Sue (Trippi), whose distinguished produce include Liam’s Map (Unbridled’s Song)–himself a ‘Rising Star’–and boom freshman sire Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway). Not surprisingly, Larry Best signed the winning ticket.

Best Gets Into Some More Mischief

Larry Best has been a big supporter of Into Mischief for years, campaigning the likes of GSW Instagrand, Rowayton, Clivetty, Mundaye Call and Center Aisle. The OXO Equine principal added another offspring of the red hot Spendthrift sire to his stable Monday, going to $1.9-million to acquire a well-bred filly (Hip 438) out of ‘TDN Rising Star’ Taylor S (Medaglia d’Oro).

“I like her frame. She looks like a two-turn filly,” Best said.  “She has a wonderful family. With my collection of Into Mischief fillies, she has to be one of the best in terms of pedigree. I continue to bet a lot on Into Mischief and so far, so good. I feel good about this one.”

As for the price, Best said, “I didn’t get in til about $1.6-million. I knew she was going to go for between $1.5-million and $2-million. So, it did not surprise me. An earlier filly that doesn’t have this pedigree went for $1.025-million. With that as a marker, I knew I was going to have to be in the $1.7-2-million range. Book 1, I think, has been unbelievably strong. It blew my expectations away. Keeneland should be very happy.”

Hip 438 will certainly carry Best’s red and white silks around the racetrack, but was also bought with his broodmare band in mind, which he began to develop at last year’s November sale. His purchases last fall were topped by GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff heroine Blue Prize (Arg) (Pure Prize), who summoned a whopping $5-million at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

“I am up to about 27 fillies and mares [in my broodmare band],” Best said. “I love the breeding process. This filly fits both my racing protocol and my breeding strategy.”

Breeder Dennis Albaugh privately purchased Hip 438’s second dam Miss Macy Sue (Trippi) near the end of her racing career, which was highlighted by a Grade III win and over $867,000 in earnings. Her second foal Liam’s Map (Unbridled’s Song) brought $800,000 at the 2012 renewal of this auction and went on to win the GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and GI Woodward S. before retiring to the Lane’s End stallion barn.

The Albaugh family retained her next foal Taylor S, who was a stakes winner and Grade II-placed. Two seasons later, Miss Macy Sue produced Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway), who carried the Albaugh silks to a win in the GIII Iroquois S. and a second in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. He retired to Taylor Made and has his first runners this year, headlined by Grade I winner and $1.5-million OBSAPR topper Princess Noor.

Hip 438 is the third foal for Taylor S. Her first is a now 3-year-old named Four Grands (Honor Code), who won one of four starts for the Albaughs. She is also responsible for an unraced juvenile colt by Bernardini.

“I am so excited,” said a jubilant Albaugh. “This was a horse we loved a lot, but sometimes you need to take some money off the table and we have spent a lot at this sale. We are very happy. Larry Best got a very nice horse. There is a lot of upside for him on this filly. We couldn’t be happier.” @CDeBernardisTDN
