Invincible Spirit’s Mutasaabeq Makes All In The Joel

Allowed free rein on the lead in Friday's G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Joel S., Shadwell's Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) was able to turn that tactical edge to full advantage as he made all under a perfectly-crafted Jim Crowley ride.

Sent off the 5-2 second favourite returning to the scene of his seven-furlong conditions success at last April's Craven meeting which saw him earn 'TDN Rising Star' status, the Charlie Hills-trained son of Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway)–who had subsequently been brought down to earth on several occasions including when a latest underwhelming fourth in Goodwood's G2 Celebration Mile Aug. 27–was in his element from the outset as the 5-4 market-leader Tempus (GB) (Kingman ({GB}) blew the start. Keeping on up the rise to the line, the homebred who was fitted with blinkers for the first time had 3/4 of a length to spare over El Drama (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), with the same margin back to Tempus in third.

“He had a nice easy time of it in front and he has won here twice before, so he obviously likes it.” Hills said of the winner, whose previous best efforts were second placings in the Apr. 22 G2 Sandown Mile and the July 9 G2 Summer Mile at Ascot. “He's in the [G2] Challenge S. in a couple of weeks, so we'll see how he is. He's run two mediocre races at Goodwood so probably won't go back there again, while at Sandown he was a little unlucky. He's a very sound horse and it's nice to win a race like this with him.”

Ghanaati's finest hour came over this course and distance for Barry Hills in the 2009 1000 Guineas, before she added the G1 Coronation S. to her tally at Royal Ascot and she was also second here in the G1 Sun Chariot S. Her son Wafy (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was successful in the G3 Mahab Al Shimaal, while she is also responsible for the Hunt Cup winner Afaak (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). The second dam Sarayir (Mr. Prospector), who also captured the Listed Oh So Sharp S. on this track, also supplied the sire Mawatheeq (Danzig) who ran second in the G1 Champion S. when it was staged here and Rumoush (Rahy) who took the Listed Feilden S. at the Craven meeting before running third in the Oaks.

Others from the illustrious family to have achieved something notable on the Rowley Mile include Maqaasid (GB) (Green Desert), who was third in the 1000 Guineas and G1 Cheveley Park S., Raheen House (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) who took the G3 Bahrain Trophy, Born With Pride (Ire) (Born To Sea {Ire}) who annexed the Listed Montrose Fillies S. on debut and one of its great celebrities Nashwan who had one of his many moments in the sun in the 2000 Guineas in 1989. Ghanaati's 3-year-old colt Maghlaak (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) promises to be at least a smart handicapper, having doubled his tally at the Goodwood track that his half-brother is so uneasy at earlier this month.

Kingman’s TDN Rising Star Nostrum Dominates HQ Feature

Sir Michael Stoute had not won Newmarket's G3 Tattersalls S. since 1994, Annus Mirabilis (Fr) (Warning {GB}) doing the deed back when it was known as the Somerville Tattersall S., and the local elder bridged a 28-year gap after 'TDN Rising Star' Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Mirror Lake {GB}, by Dubai Destination) asserted his superiority in taking fashion to frank the impression given on debut in July. Juddmonte's March-foaled bay had delivered a scintillating performance over seven furlongs at Sandown in that only prior outing and accepted a tow in second after a sharp getaway in this black-type bow. Sent forward to dispute the lead from halfway, the 7-4 second choice was shaken up in front passing the quarter-mile marker and kept on powerfully under mild coaxing on the climb to the line to easily tame Listed Chesham S. winner and G2 Vintage S. second Holloway Boy (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) by 1 1/4 lengths. Godolphin's G2 Superlative S. runner-up and Listed Denford S. scorer Victory Dance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was unable to land a telling bow from off the pace and finished three lengths further back in third. Rank outsider Abravaggio (Ire) (Caravaggio) made a bold attempt from the front and was outclassed, but not disgraced, once headed and finished 15 lengths adrift of third.

“I thought it was a very warm race, but he did it very nicely first time and was entitled to come and run in a race like that,” said Stoute after notching an overall fourth winner of the race. “We expected a very big run, but for a horse racing for the first time like he was it is always difficult to fathom. It is so far so good and you could only be pleased. I don't know if we will see him again this season. We will take him home and chill him out and relax him and put him back in fast work. It is a difficult time of year, especially for 2-year-olds when the weather turns, so we don't know. I would like to give him one more run [this year].”

Holloway Boy's trainer Karl Burke was not downcast in defeat and commented, “We're delighted with that as he missed eight to 10 days with a dirty scope and missed the [G2] Champagne S. [at Doncaster]. Danny Tudhope said he would be suited by a mile, so we could look at the [Oct. 22 G1] Vertem Futurity Trophy or, beyond that, the Breeders' Cup.”

Nostrum becomes the third black-type scorer produced by the dual stakes-winning G3 Select S. runner-up Mirror Lake (GB) (Dubai Destination), herself a half-sister to the dam of Listed Lanwades Stud S. victrix Hateya (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}). The March-foaled homebred bay is a half-brother to dual Group-winning G1 C F Orr S. second Imaging (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Listed Heatherlie S. victor Titus (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and a yearling filly by Frankel (GB). Descendants of his third dam Roupala (Vaguely Noble {Ire}) include this term's G1 Saudi Cup hero Emblem Road (Quality Road), multiple Grade I-winning distaffer Ventura (Chester House), dual elite-level winners Harlem (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) and Queen Supreme (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and stakes-winning G1 Prix Royal-Oak runner-up Erudite (GB) (Generous {Ire}).

Mutasaabeq to Stand at Darby Dan Farm

Mutasaabeq (Into Mischief–Downside Scenario, by Scat Daddy), a Grade II-winning juvenile, has been retired and will take up stud duty for the 2023 breeding season at Darby Dan Farm. The deal was brokered by The Stallion Company and his fee will be $7,500 S&N.

“Hailing from a sire line with a lot of upside, Mutasaabeq is a fast and precocious son of Into Mischief,” said Ryan Norton, Darby Dan Farm's stallion director. “He is an outstanding individual with all the ingredients to be a top sire, and we're excited about the opportunity to offer him to breeders in the upcoming breeding season.”

A $425,000 weanling purchase by Shadwell Stable at the 2018 Keeneland November Sale, Mutasaabeq followed a 'TDN Rising Star' performance on debut at Saratoga with a third-place finish in the GI Runhappy Hopeful S. Switched to grass, he posted a visually impressive come-from-behind victory in Keeneland's GII Bourbon S. Mutasaabeq's resume also includes a win in Gulfstream's Mucho Macho Man S. at three. All told, Mutasaabeq hit the board in four of six lifetime starts and earned $259,670.

By record-setting sire Into Mischief and bred in Kentucky by BlackRidge Stables LLC, Mutasaabeq is produced from the winning Scat Daddy mare Downside Scenario. This is also the family of this year's GI Florida Derby winner White Abarrio (Race Day) and graded stakes winner Cool Cowboy (Kodiak Kowboy).

Santa Anita Derby Winner Roadster Retired to Ocala Stud

Roadster (Quality Road–Ghost Dancing, by Silver Ghost), winner of the 2019 GI Santa Anita Derby and runner-up in the GI Malibu S., has been retired and will stand the 2023 breeding season at Ocala Stud.

Racing in the colors of Speedway Stables, the $525,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase earned 'TDN Rising Star' status on debut for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert as a juvenile and was also third in the GI Del Mar Futurity.

“Roadster is all class, and he was an exciting colt on the racetrack,” said Ocala Stud's David O'Farrell. “He was an extremely precocious juvenile, breaking his maiden in his debut and then placing in a Grade I [Del Mar Futurity] to eventual champion Game Winner in just his second start. The following year, Roadster proved he was a serious racehorse with a tremendous win in the Grade I Santa Anita Derby, turning the tables on Game Winner. He competed against the best of his generation throughout his career, and we are excited to offer breeders the opportunity to breed to a top-class son of Quality Road who has the looks, pedigree, and performance to be a leading stallion.”

Bred in Kentucky by Stone Farm, Roadster posted a record of 16-3-4-2 and earnings of $901,500. By leading sire Quality Road, Roadster is out of the stakes-winning Silver Ghost mare Ghost Dancing. He is a half-brother to Grade I winner and Keeneland track-record setter Ascend (Candy Ride {Arg}) and the graded stakes-placed Moro Tap (Tapit).
