Mehmas’s Knight A New Rising Star At Yarmouth

KHK Racing's stellar September continued on Sunday as the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained Knight (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}–Fidaaha {Ire}, by New Approach {Ire}) stormed to success at Yarmouth to become the latest of the TDN Rising Star juveniles of 2022. Always travelling strongly in second for Cameron Noble after a tardy break in this seven-furlong Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 “Newcomers” Maiden S., the 11-2 shot took command three out and was busy surging clear a furlong later. Chased by the €370,000 Arqana Deauville August graduate Irregular Warfare (Fr) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) in the closing stages, the full-brother to Malavath (Ire) kept him at bay to score by two lengths, with another 3 3/4 lengths back to the Gosdens' strongly-supported 6-4 favourite Rajasthan (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in third.

“They went quite steady and the leader took me as far as he could, but ideally I needed something to take me further as he's still quite raw,” Noble said of the sire's first TDN Rising Star. “He's a nice individual and I'd say he wouldn't want it too much quicker than that. He could be anything–he did that smartly considering he is quite green.”

Knight, who cost 210,000gns at the Book 2 Sale, is the second foal out of the Shadwell cast-off whose first was the aforementioned Malavath, winner of the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte and G3 Prix Imprudence and runner-up in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Fidaaha is a full-sister to Ceisteach (Ire), who captured the GIII Robert G. Dick Memorial S., and a half to Steip Amach (Ire) (Vocalised) who annexed the G3 Killavullan S. and G3 Amethyst S. before finishing third in the G1 Prix Rothschild and G1 Prix Jean Romanet. Her filly by Cotai Glory (GB) sells as lot 459 from Tally-Ho Stud at the Goffs Orby Sale on Wednesday, while she also has a foal full-brother to the winner and Malavath.

Galileo’s Espionage A New Rising Star At The Curragh

A day after Ballydoyle had demonstrated the power of their 2-year-old reserves at Newmarket, Espionage (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) became the stable's 11th TDN Rising Star juvenile of 2022 in The Curragh's opening maiden on Sunday. Unlucky on debut when runner-up to stablemate and fellow TDN Rising Star Alexandroupolis (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) over an extended mile at Galway Sept. 6, the son of the G2 Ribblesdale S. winner Even Song (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) was sent forward by Ryan Moore dropping back to seven for this Williamhill.ie Irish EBF Maiden. Clear from two out on the far side, the 9-4 favourite had 1 3/4 lengths to spare over stablemate Sierra Blanca (Ire) (No Nay Never), a son of Alexandrova (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), at the line with another half a length back to the well-regarded Michael O'Callaghan trainee Djockovic (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) in third.

“He ran well the last day, when the other horse got up the rail and he had to come around,” Aidan O'Brien said of the imperious sire's 41st TDN Rising Star. “Ryan said he's babyish and when he got to the start he was a little bit anxious. He might go for something like the [G3] Killavullan or the [G3] Eyrefield at Leopardstown. We won't force him. He looks a middle-distance horse for next year and usually when you get a Galileo that wins over seven it bodes well.”

Even Song, who is a half-sister to the G1 St Leger and G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares heroine Simple Verse (Ire) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}) and to the G2 Superlative S.-placed Maxentius (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), also has a yearling full-sister to the winner and a filly foal by Wootton Bassett (GB) to come.

Echo Zulu Returns To Winning Ways in Dogwood

Reigning champion 2-year-old filly and 'TDN Rising Star' Echo Zulu made it five stakes wins on Saturday for her sire Gun Runner with a dominant performance in the GIII Dogwood S. under the lights at Churchill Downs. Last seen tasting defeat for the first time when a tiring fourth behind Secret Oath (Arrogate) in the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks over this track, the $300,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase was off at 51 cents on the dollar to return to winning ways and did just that. Away quickest of all from the inside barrier, the Steve Asmussen trainee showed the way through moderate fractions as you could have thrown a blanket across the five of them at the half-mile. They were all stacked up behind the champ, ready to pounce if the favorite faltered, but Echo Zulu went through her gears in the final furlong and a half and crossed the wire 5 1/4 lengths to the good of Tarabi.

Echo Zulu, who was tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' following her debut win at Saratoga last July, won the GI Spinaway S. and GI Frizette S. before capping her championship season with a 5 1/4-length victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies S. She opened her sophomore campaign with a gritty win in the Mar. 26 GII Fair Grounds Oaks, but weakened to fourth when suffering her first loss in the May 6 GI Kentucky Oaks. The champ was scratched behind the gate of the June 11 GI Acorn S.

Pedigree Notes:

Adding to Gun Runner's Grade I sweep Saturday afternoon at Parx with Taiba and Society were 11-1 Sixtythreecaliber in the Seneca Overnight S. and Gunite in the Fort Harrod S. prior to Echo Zulu's tour-de-force.

Echo Zulu, a daughter of 2005 GII Forward Gal S. winner Legomyecho, has an unraced 2-year-old half-sister by American Pharoah named Doing Justice who sold for $1.4 million at the 2021 Keeneland September sale.

Haskell Rematch Highlights Saturday’s Graded Stakes Slate

After putting on a show on the Jersey Shore earlier this summer, the Gun Runner-sired GI TVG.com Haskell S. exacta of Cyberknife and 'TDN Rising Star' Taiba co-headline a loaded renewal of the GI Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Saturday.

Was it a tale of two trips or did the best horse just win that day at Monmouth Park? You be the judge.

While subsequent GI Runhappy Travers S. runner-up Cyberknife awaited racing room leaving the quarter pole, the hard-ridden Taiba began to wind up beneath Mike Smith with a four-wide blitz. Florent Geroux, meanwhile, found a seam aboard the GI Arkansas Derby winner along the rail as favored 'Rising Star' Jack Christopher (Munnings) began to back out of it at the furlong marker. Cyberknife ran to daylight from there and outbattled the GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby winner by a game head in a race that didn't deserve a loser.

“He's a Grade I horse and it's a Grade I race,” trainer Brad Cox said of Cyberknife and Saturday's $1-million affair. “And look, I'm excited about matching up with Taiba. He's a very good horse, a Grade I winner in his own right. There are some other very good horses in the race. It looks like a really good group of horses.”

That “really good group of horses” also includes the rail-drawn GISW Zandon (Upstart), who should appreciate the turnback to nine furlongs following a third-place finish in the Travers; the Cox-trained GIII Ohio Derby winner and GII Jim Dandy S. third Tawny Port (Pioneerof the Nile); the top three finishers of the GIII West Virginia Derby–Skippylongstocking (Exaggerator), 'Rising Star' We the People (Constitution) and Simplification (Not This Time); and GI Curlin Florida Derby winner and Ohio Derby runner-up White Abarrio (Race Day), who finished a puzzling seventh last out in the Haskell.

Saturday in the Parx…

The loaded 13-race program at Parx also features four other graded events, led by the GI Cotillion for 3-year-old fillies.

In addition to seeking a record fourth Pennsylvania Derby victory with 5-2 morning-line favorite Taiba, Hall of Famer Bob Baffert will also ship in Cotillion second-choice Adare Manor (Uncle Mo) from his Santa Anita base. The runaway GIII Las Virgenes S. heroine has been training lights out since finishing second as the favorite in the GII Black-Eyed Susan S. May 20.

“She is training really well,” Baffert said. “I could have run her in a softer spot. This will be a class check for her.”

After chasing home runaway division leader Nest (Curlin) in Saratoga's GI Coaching Club American Oaks and GI Alabama S., the classy Secret Oath (Arrogate) seeks her first win since capturing the GI Kentucky Oaks. She is the 2-1 morning-line favorite.

“She is only getting stronger,” Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas said. “She sure is filling out and getting better and holding a lot of weight. She is probably maturing into the filly that we wanted her to be.”

Todd Pletcher will be represented by a formidable trio in Alabama third Goddess of Fire (Mineshaft), streaking local Cathryn Sophia S. winner and 'Rising Star' Green Up (Upstart) and GIII Monmouth Oaks heroine and 'Rising Star' Shahama (Munnings).

The card also features wide-open renewals of the GII Gallant Bob S. and GIII Turf Monster S., while a field of nine marathoners will line up for the GIII Greenwood Cup.

The day's graded stakes action is rounded out by Saturday evening's GIII Dogwood S. at Churchill Downs, featuring the return of champion and 'Rising Star' Echo Zulu (Gun Runner), who was a vet scratch at the gate prior to Belmont's GI Acorn S. June 11; and Belmont at the Big A's GIII Athenia S.
