Proud And Regal Edges Criterium International Battle Of The Galileos

It was a case of heads up, heads down at the conclusion of Saint-Cloud's G1 Criterium International on Saturday, with Coolmore's homebred Galileo duo Proud And Regal (Ire) and Espionage (Ire) engaged in a thrilling tussle in which the former ultimately prevailed.

Last seen finishing runner-up in the Sept. 11 G1 Vincent O'Brien National S., the Donnacha O'Brien-trained son of the G1 Fillies' Mile and G1 Falmouth S. heroine Simply Perfect (GB) (Danehill) who captured the July 21 G3 Tyros S. at Leopardstown was asked to keep close tabs on Ballydoyle's TDN Rising Star Espionage by Gavin Ryan as that rival took up the running from the outset.

Getting to the stand's rail as they entered the straight, the 3-1 second favourite stuck to his guns despite the tenacity of the eventual runner-up under Ioritz Mendizabal and managed to overhaul his compatriot in the final stride for a head success. The Ralph Beckett-trained Salt Bay (Ger) (Farhh {GB}) was 1 3/4 lengths back in third.

“He was very genuine and it was nice to get a big one with him,” Donnacha said. “It was only in the last furlong that he really got on top of dad's horse, but I'm sure they're two nice staying horses going forward.”

While there was perhaps a bigger pointer for the 2023 Derby from the latest Ballydoyle star at Doncaster later in the afternoon, the youngest trainer of the O'Brien clan has his own dreams of Classic glory next term. “He's probably going to want 10 or 12 furlongs next year, which opens up a lot of options for him. He's a good stayer,” he added. “He's had a few runs and he's plenty fit, but he's had a long enough year so it's a testament to him that he's still performing at a high class this far into the year. Whether we stick around for Classics with him in this part of the world or go travelling with him, we've plenty of options.”

Pedigree Notes

Becoming the 97th group 1 winner for his outstanding sire, Proud And Regal who was also third behind Aesop's Fables (Ire) (No Nay Never) in the Aug. 20 G2 Futurity S. at The Curragh is the last and best foal out of the aforementioned Simply Perfect. Also responsible for Galileo's G3 International S. winner Mekong River (Ire) and G3 Princess Royal S. and G3 Give Thanks S. runner-up Simply Beautiful (Ire), she is a full-sister to One Moment In Time (Ire) who produced two other notable Galileos in the dual group 3 winner and G1 St Leger runner-up Bondi Beach (Ire) and the G3 Gallinule S. scorer Constantinople (Ire).

The second dam is the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and G1 Fillies' Mile-placed Hotelgenie Dot Com (GB) (Selkirk), whose half-sister Bianca Nera (GB) (Salse) was successful in the Moyglare and the G2 Lowther S. and is the second dam of the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S., G1 Juddmonte International S., G1 Coronation Cup and G1 Dubai Sheema Classic-winning sire Postponed (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), the G1 Premio Lydia Tesio and G2 Park Hill S. winner God Given (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and the GIII Beverly Hills H. winner and GI Yellow Ribbon S. runner-up Turning Top (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}). God Given is the dam of this year's G3 Autumn S. and G3 Solario S. winner Silver Knott (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), who could provide another top-level success if things fall his way at the Breeders' Cup next month.

Tapwrit Colt Dazzles In ‘TDN Rising Star’ Debut

Sent away at a well-backed 7-2 in arguably the toughest and deepest 2-year-old maiden of the fall meet at Keeneland Friday afternoon, Spendthrift Farm and Frank Fletcher Racing Operation's Victory Formation (c, 2, Tapwrit–Smart N Soft, by Smart Strike) led past every pole to become the 10th individual winner and the first 'TDN Rising Star' for his Gainesway-based freshman sire (by Tapit).

Hustled away from gate three by Luis Saez, Victory Formation headed off his rivals as the field linked up with the track proper and got the opening quarter in a solid :23.03 while chased to his inside by favored Communication Memo (Bolt d'Oro) and by Release Mccraken (McCraken) deeper out. Galloping in hand on the turn, the athletic bay pinched a break when asked to lengthen entering the stretch and kicked readily clear through the final eighth of a mile to take it by a space. Release Mccraken was second ahead of Communication Memo.

Weyhill Road (Quality Road), the well-related $1.6-million Keeneland September graduate, was headstrong and checked in traffic down the backstretch, came with an inside run on the turn and flattened out a bit in the final furlong to finish fourth in an effort that can certainly be built upon. Baseline Beater (Flatter) was bothered badly by Schoolmaster (Ger) (Helmet {Aus}) soon after the break, but closed his final quarter in a race-fastest :24.65 to check in a promising fifth.

Gainesway, who stands Classic winner Tapwrit alongside his own extraordinary sire, purchased the winner's dam for $140,000 in foal to Uncle Mo at the 2015 Keeneland November Sale and elected to retain the mare when offered carrying the colt that would become Victory Formation on a bid of $47,000 at KEENOV in 2019.

Victory Formation found his way back into the Keeneland sales pavilion 12 months later, hammering to Black Cat Stable for $100,000, the priciest of 18 foals by Tapwrit to sell in 2020. Resold to Gina Fennell for $150,000 at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton July Sale, the Mar. 3 foal fetched $340,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale after breezing a quarter-mile in :21 2/5 (see below).

A half-brother to recent GI Rodeo Drive S. third Bellamore (Empire Maker, $184,840), Victory Formation is a grandson of late James Tafel's GSW Softly, while the deeper female family includes GSW/MGISP Til Forbid (Temperence Hill) and her Grade III-winning daughter Scoop (Gone West). Smart N Soft is the dam of a yearling Karakontie (Jpn) filly that was purchased by RGS Enterprises for $130,000 at last month's Keeneland September Sale and a weanling filly by Practical Joke. She was most recently covered by Raging Bull (Fr).

Half-Sister To Sottsass Earns TDN Rising Star Rosette At Deauville

Ecurie des Monceaux's unraced 2-year-old filly Snowpark (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}–Starlet's Sister {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), a half-sister to Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), went postward at odds of 37-10 for Thursday's Prix de Hotot-En-Auge over one mile at Deauville and returned home with a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette after producing an impressive closing burst in the debutantes' heat. Snowpark was swiftly into stride from the inside stall and raced in a close-up third through the early stages. Shuffled down to fifth soon after turning for home, she was shaken up approaching the final furlong and quickened stylishly under mild urging in the closing stages to deny Kamiyah (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), herself a half-sister to G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois-winning sire Al Wukair (Ire) (Dream Ahead), by a half-length nearing the line.

Snowpark is the seventh of nine foals and sixth scorer from as many runners produced by a full-sister to G3 Prix Cleopatre victrix Leo's Starlet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The April-foaled bay's dam Starlet's Sister (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is also a half-sister to stakes-winning GI Clement L Hirsch H. runner-up and G1 Prix Saint-Alary third Anabaa's Creation (Ire) (Anabaa), herself the dam of the stakes-winning Create A Dream (Oasis Dream {GB}). Starlet's Sister had previously thrown G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, G1 Prix du Jockey Club and G1 Prix Ganay hero Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), MGISW US champion Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) and MGSW GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and GI Flower Bowl S. runner-up My Sister Nat (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}). She is also the dam of a yearling colt by Siyouni (Fr), a full-brother to Sottsass who was knocked down for a sale-topping €2.1-million at this year's Arqana August sale, and a colt foal by Siyouni (Fr).

Dubawi’s Local Dynasty Takes The Silver Tankard

Labelled a TDN Rising Star on his winning debut over seven furlongs at Newmarket Aug. 5, Godolphin's Local Dynasty (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Really Special {GB}, by Shamardal) was fifth in a strong edition of York's G3 Acomb S. 12 days later before returning to winning ways in a Sandown mile novice Sept. 14. Sent off the even-money favourite for Monday's Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Silver Tankard S. at Pontefract, the Charlie Appleby-trained relative of Dubawi's luminaries Yibir (GB) and Wild Illusion (GB) was sheltered behind the pace early by William Buick. Staying on down the outer to overhaul Luckin Brew (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) in the final strides, the homebred scored by a neck. “The ground is quite testing and it turned into a bit of a slog,” the winning rider said. “He really stuck his head out.”

The Listed Montrose Fillies S.-winning dam, who has a yearling filly by Sea The Stars (Ire), is a daughter of the fellow listed-winning Rumh (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) who produced the aforementioned Breeders' Cup Turf hero Yibir and G1 Prix de l'Opera and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac scorer Wild Illusion (GB) who was also second in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. The third dam is the G3 Preis der Winterkonigin winner Royal Dubai (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}), a half-sister to the GI Beverly D. S. heroine Royal Highness (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}).
