Impressive Debut Winner Faiza Supplemented to Starlet

Faiza (Girvin), named a 'TDN Rising Star' off an impressive debut score Nov. 12 at Del Mar, will be supplemented for $10,000 to the $300,000 GI Starlet Saturday at Los Alamitos. The Starlet, which is for fillies at 1 1/16 miles, is the first of four stakes events for 2-year-olds to be run during Los Al's six-day Winter Thoroughbred meet that opens Friday.

Owned by Michael Lund Petersen, who won the 2015 GI Los Alamitos Futurity with Mor Spirit (Eskendereya), and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Faiza cruised to a 3 1/2-length victory under wraps in her unveiling, covering six furlongs in 1:09.28. She was a $725,000 purchase earlier this year at the Fasig-Tipton Mid Atlantic sale.

Baffert–who has won the Starlet five times in a row with Dream Tree (Uncle Mo) in 2017, Chasing Yesterday (Tapit) in 2018, Bast (Uncle Mo) in 2019, Varda (Distorted Humor) in 2020 and Eda (Munnings) last year–may also start Doinitthehardway (Street Sense). Owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, Doinitthehardway the dark bay is a three-start maiden who has a pair of seconds and a third on her resume.

Entries for the Starlet will be taken Wednesday.

Hard Spun Colt Earns ‘Rising Star’ Laurels at Del Mar

Edge Racing and Muir Hut Stables' Spun Intended (c, 2, Hard Spun–Flora Dora, by First Dude) ran too good to lose his Oct. 30 debut at Santa Anita, just failing to overcome a brutal trip when dropping a half-length decision to the well-meant Fort Warren (Curlin). The latter earned the 'TDN Rising Star' nod for the win and Saturday afternoon, Spun Intended followed suit with a 'Rising Star'-worthy performance of his own where the surf meets the turf.

Spun Intended was off slowly in that Oct. 30 bow and was last of the octet early before improving on the turn while conceding stacks of ground. He knuckled down determinedly in the final furlong and was gaining inches on Fort Warren, but the wire came a few strides too soon. The chestnut had done his part since with a pair of solid morning trials and never looked like losing Saturday.

Sent off at odds of 4-5 that represented an overlay, the $100,000 Keeneland September yearling and $125,000 OBS March breezer (:21 1/5) showed good pace from gate four and advanced without being asked for much by Mike Smith to take up the running after an opening couple of furlongs in :21.95. Hugging the fence into the final five-sixteenths of a mile, having cut the half-mile in a slick :44.20, Spun Intended was a bit tardy in switching his leads, but carried an unassailable advantage into the final panel and trotted in to score by 6 1/2 emphatic lengths.

Spun Intended is an 11th 'TDN Rising Star' for Hard Spun and is the first foal out of Flora Dora, winner of the 2015 My Dear Girl S. of the Florida Stallion Series and the 2016 Busanda S. She was also third to Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro) in that year's GI CCA Oaks. A half-sister to SW Lindisfarne (City Zip), Flora Dora is the dam of a yearling Nyquist colt that was bought back on a bid of $185,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. Her foal of 2022 is a filly by Gun Runner and she was most recently bred to Candy Ride (Arg).

VICTORY FORMATION (c, 2, Tapwrit–Smart N Soft, by Smart Strike) sailed home to 'TDN Rising Star'-dom last out Oct. 21 against a deep Keeneland maiden special field, going coast-to-coast by 4 3/4 lengths to become the first for his sire to garner the accolade. Hammered down to 6-5 favoritism here on the step up into the allowance ranks, he vied with a rival early from the rail through :21.44 and :45.11 splits. After briefly leading and then losing his advantage nearing the eighth pole, he responded when pressured again by Two Eagles River (Cloud Computing) and gamely prevailed by a neck. A half to Bellamore (Empire Maker), GISP, $284,040 and to the dam of Italian stakes winner Sienna (Ger) (Amaron {GB}), Victory Formation is the latest winning addition for his dam. GSW Dennis’ Moment Retired to Leadem Farm in Arkansas

Graded stakes winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Dennis' Moment (Tiznow–Transplendid, by Elusive Quality) has been retired from racing and will stand the upcoming season at Leadem Farm near Leola, Arkansas. Owned by a syndicate led by Glen Hill Farm and brokered by Jay Goodwin, Dennis' Moment will stand for $2,500.

Bred by Tolo Thoroughbreds in Kentucky, the now-5-year-old was a $400,000 yearling purchase by Albaugh Family Racing at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. Debuting at Churchill Downs in June at two, the Dale Romans trainee clipped heels and unseated his rider, then reappeared a month later to blow the doors off the competition by 19 1/4 lengths at Ellis Park, resulting in his 'Rising Star' moniker. Dennis' Moment quickly added the GIII Iroquois S. at Churchill and was sent to the 2019 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile as the odds-on favorite, only to stumble badly out of the gate and lose all chance. He was raced sparingly the next three seasons, winning an optional allowance at Keeneland at four prior to placing in the GIII Mr. Prospector S. at Gulfstream. Dennis' Moment retires with a record of 14-3-2-3 and earnings of $302,962.

Hailing from the family of French, U.S., and Japanese Grade I/Group 1 winner Golden Pheasant (Caro {Ire}), Dennis' Moment is out a granddaughter of MGSW Seewillo (Pleasant Colony). His own dam, Transplendid, sold for $1.4 million at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November sale.
