Gun Runner Filly a ‘Rising Star’ at Gulfstream

Bandita (f, 3, Gun Runner–Tricky One, by Unbridled's Song), coming off her first set of works for now-eight-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher, cemented her status as a 'TDN Rising Star' at Gulfstream Park on Sunday afternoon. The bay filly, backed down to even-money favoritism, did not disappoint her connections or the bettors in what was a sparkling debut.

Breaking alertly, the Bass Stables colorbearer set the tone early by controlling the pace up front. Despite being challenged by Arrow Bolt (Arrogate) just before the far turn, the $350,000 KEESEP purchase moved professionally, and at the eighth pole poured it on by showcasing a new set of gears as the rest of the field faded into the background. Bandita hit the wire 8 3/4-lengths ahead of 7-2 shot Ocean Club (Curlin) who was second.

Tricky One, who was purchased by International Equities Holdings for $275,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale, is a half-sister to MSW Optionality (Gun Runner) and SW Simple Surprise (Cowboy Cal), whose millionaire son GISW Gunite (Gunite) won Saturday's King Cotton S. at Oaklawn and could be Dubai-bound. The first runner to win at the races for her dam has an unnamed 2-year-old half-sister by Flatter and her mare visited Practical Joke last year. Bandita is the sixth 'TDN Rising Star' for last year's leading sophomore sire.

4th-Gulfstream, $70,000, Msw, 1-29, 3yo, f, 7f, 1:22.77, ft, 8 3/4 lengths.

Exceed And Excel’s Mawj Rebounds In The Desert With Conditions Success

4th-Meydan, Cond, $100,000, 3yo, f, 7fT, 1:26.21, sf.
MAWJ (IRE) (f, 3, Exceed And Excel {Aus}–Modern Ideals {GB}, by New Approach {Ire}), named a 'TDN Rising Star' after winning her May 14 Newmarket novice by 4 3/4 lengths, went on to take the G2 Duchess Of Cambridge S. two starts later and ended her juvenile season with a third in the G1 Cheveley Park S. in her fifth start. Perched out wide in an ideal stalking position, she tackled longtime leader Alseyoob (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) at the quarter pole and appeared home free. However, fellow Godolphin colourbearer Dream Of Love (Ire) (Shamardal) was rocketing home up the outside and cut the margin down to a short head at the line. “To be honest I got racing too far out and I wasn't really going too well at the 600 metres,” said winning jockey Pat Cosgrave. “She's an Exceed And Excel and she doesn't really want this ground. It was tight at the line but class got her through.” Although Epitome never placed, she has made a large impact on the breed, as she is already the dam of three stakes winners including the winner. Modern News (GB) (Shamardal) won at listed level in England and was also placed in a pair of Group 3s there, while her fourth foal was recently crowned Eclipse Champion Turf Male Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who won the GI Breeders' Cup Mile and GI Woodbine Mile S. to go along with his Classic scorein the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains. Epitome's latest foal is a juvenile filly by Mastercraftsman (Ire). Lifetime Record: 6-3-1-1, $213,910. Click for the VIDEO.

Munnys Gold Dominates in Return

8th-Gulfstream, $54,000, (S), Alw, 1-25, (NW1X), 3yo, f, 6f, 1:10.78, ft, 6 1/4 lengths.
MUNNYS GOLD (f, 3, Munnings–Haraawa, by Medaglia d'Oro), not seen since romping to a 14 1/2-length 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy debut at Monmouth Park last June, strode home the easiest of winners in her return to the races at Gulfstream Park Wednesday. Away a half-step slowly, the 1-9 favorite rushed up to press the pace down the backstretch and grabbed command as the quarter went up in :22.00. Three lengths in front through a half in :45.36, she sailed clear down the lane under a motionless Irad Ortiz to win by 6 1/4 lengths. Jolly Miss Jill (Handsome Mike) was second. A $92,000 FTKNOV weanling, Munnys Gold sold for $300,000 at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton July sale. Haraawa produced a filly by Frosted last year and was bred back to Game Winner. Quality Road’s First Defender Earns ‘Rising Star’ Nod On Debut

Gunned to the front from a middle gate by jockey Tyler Gaffalione, First Defender (3, c, Quality Road–Love And Pride, by A.P. Indy) withstood pressure on all sides and a contested early pace at the Fair Grounds to become the newest 'TDN Rising Star'.

Off sharply, the colt found himself sandwiched between horses from the opening strides with Pinfire (Bolt d'Oro) to his inside and Golden Nugget (Mendelssohn) off his outer flank. The trio quickly separated themselves from the rest of the field as they sped through an opening quarter in :21.48. Still bunched together as they rounded the far turn, the race became a question of who could withstand the pressure. First Defender answered to the affirmative, striding away past the furlong marker and opening up close to home for the 5 1/4-length win as the 4-5 favorite. 21-1 shot Quaternion closed to be a clear second.

Out of a dual Grade I-winning dam in Love and Pride, herself a $4.9 million purchase by Three Chimneys out of the 2013 FTKNOV sale, First Defender is already a half-brother to a pair of stakes winners in Bella Runner (Gun Runner) and Princesinha Julia (Pioneerof the Nile). Third dam Cara Rafaela (Quiet American) is responsible for the late MGISW and leading sire Bernardini (A.P. Indy). First Defender is the 14th 'TDN Rising Star' for Quality Road. Love and Pride produced a filly by Volatile last year and was not bred for 2023.
