Annapolis Returns A Winner In Opening Verse

Barring his disastrous start in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile last fall, Annapolis has been the picture of consistency throughout his career–never placing worse than second in seven prior starts dating back to Sept. 2021. The 'TDN Rising Star' earned success at the highest level with his win in the GI Coolmore Turf Mile S. leading into that Breeders' Cup, where a missed break derailed his race. Despite an awkward beginning to Thursday's feature race at Churchill, Annapolis was able to establish good stalking position in sixth, content to sit behind horses as Get Smokin (Get Stormy) paced the field through easy opening fractions of :24.29 and :49.33. As space opened up for his move, Annapolis swung out and swept into contention with an eye-catching rally exiting the far turn. Still hung on the outside down the lane, he took aim on late leader Churchtown and just had the time to drive by, nailing his rival in the final jumps to post the narrow victory.

“He got the job done today,” said winning jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. “Luis [Saez] was riding, and I was riding, and coming to the wire, he got his head in front. In the Breeders' Cup Mile (GI), he stumbled at the break, but I kept asking, and he kept trying. And he was facing some very good horses. It's nice to see him back and in great condition. Hopefully, he'll have another great year.”

Out of GSW/MGISP My Miss Sophia, Annapolis has a 2-year-old full-brother, Eisenhower, and a newborn half-sister by Gun Runner. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Rising Star Aimed At Oaks Trials

'TDN Rising Star' Gather Ye Rosebuds (GB) (Zoffany {Ire}), who blitzed a field by 9 1/2 lengths at Newbury will be pointed at one of the Oaks trials at Lingfield or Newbury later this month, according to handler Jack Channon. The G1 Betfred Oaks is slated for June 2.

“She has come out of the race really well and she looks fantastic,” said Channon, who will run Caernarfon (GB) (Cityscape {GB}) in the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas on Sunday, of the Mrs. P. Shanahan and Emily Magnier-owned filly. “I'm really happy with the way she is progressing.

“We will probably have a look at one of the Oaks trials, maybe Lingfield [on Saturday week] or Newbury [Fillies' Trial S., May 20], I would have thought, in a couple of weeks' time.

“She is in great form and we will aim her at one of those, I should think.”

Partnership Off To Flying Start With No Nay Never Rising Star In France

Craig Bernick and Haras d'Etreham's hitherto untested 2-year-old filly Les Pavots (Ire) (No Nay Never–Sparrow {Ire}, by Oasis Dream {GB}) was hammered down to 5-2 favouritism at the tills for Thursday's €30,000 Prix des Closeaux at Chantilly and returned home with a 'TDN Rising Star' badge after making all for an impressive success in the straight six-furlong newcomers' test. Breaking smartly to seize an immediate lead, she was in command throughout and kept on powerfully under pressure inside the final quarter-mile to easily outclass Freville (Fr) (Gleneagles {Ire}) by 3 1/2 lengths in taking fashion. Les Pavots becomes the seventh 'TDN Rising Star' for No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) and joins an honour roll which includes Ten Sovereigns (Ire) and Little Big Bear (Ire).

Nicolas de Chambure told TDN Europe that the partnership (Haras D'Etreham and Craig Bernick) had privately purchased three yearling fillies from Coolmore last year, one of which was Les Pavots.

“We do all these deals through Hubie De Burgh and it was a big team effort with Hubie and Craig to buy those fillies from Coolmore,” de Chambure said. “It's the first one of the three to race, and it's a great start to that partnership.”

The other fillies were also by No Nay Never, one out of Believe'N'Succeed (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) making her a half-sister to Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the other is out of G1 Irish Oaks winner Bracelet (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).

“Coolmore breed such brilliant horses, and it was great to be able to buy some of those well-bred fillies with long-term plans,” he added. “The filly out of Believe'N'Succeed is with Fabrice Chappet and the Bracelet filly is with Christophe Ferland.”

Les Pavots is the fifth of six foals and fourth scorer from as many runners produced by G3 Ballyogan S. third Sparrow (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), herself out of G3 Middleton S. victrix and G1 Oaks second All Too Beautiful (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). All Too Beautiful, in turn, is a daughter of storied matriarch Urban Sea (Miswaki). The March-foaled chestnut is a half-sister to G1 Cox Plate and G1 Tancred S. hero Sir Dragonet (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), dual stakes-winning G3 Gordon S. and G3 N E Manion Cup placegetter Sir Lucan (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and a yearling colt by Camelot (GB).

A 31st TDN Rising Star For Kingman

Ascot's Naas Racecourse Royal Ascot Trials Day British EBF Fillies' S. offers the G1 Coronation S. hopefuls a chance to get acquainted with the track and Normandie Stud's Queen For You (Ire) (Kingman {GB}–Fallen For You {GB}, by Dansili {GB}) could be one for that contest after earning TDN Rising Star status on Wednesday. Debuting in the mile encounter, the John and Thady Gosden-trained daughter of the 2012 Coronation heroine whose half-siblings include the multiple group winner Glorious Journey (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and who is a full-sister to the listed scorer Love Is You (Ire) recovered from a tardy start to find cover behind the leaders in fifth after the initial stages.

Looming large on the stands' side at the quarter-mile marker, the 4-1 chance quickened smartly to lead approaching the final furlong and was ridden out by Robert Havlin in the closing stages to account for Copy Artist (GB) (No Nay Never) by two lengths. “This filly is still raw, but she has talent,” the rider said. “She quickened up well, she'll have learnt plenty and she can only come forward for the run.” Thady Gosden added, “She'd been going nicely at home and her mother won the Coronation Stakes, while Kingman was a champion miler. So yes, we would take a look at the Coronation Stakes. It's five weeks away, but another run would benefit her.”

Queen For You, amazingly the 31st TDN Rising Star for her sire, whose best in that category so far are Persian King (Ire) and Palace Pier (GB), is the sixth of eight foals and fourth scorer produced by Fallen For You, whose progeny include the multiple group winner Glorious Journey (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Kingman's Listed Radley S. scorer and G3 Nell Gwyn S. third Love Is You (Ire). A daughter of the Listed Silver Trophy scorer and multiple group-placed Fallen Star (GB) (Brief Truce), she is kin to the Listed Heron S. winner Fallen Idol (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and to the G2 Lancashire Oaks runner-up Fallen In Love (GB) (Galileo {Ire}).

Fallen In Love was in turn responsible for Kingman's Serve The King (GB), who took the GII Red Smith S. and was second in the GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, and also for the G3 Prix de Flore scorer Loving Things (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) who was third in the Lancashire Oaks. Also connected to the G1 Lockinge S.-winning sire Fly To The Stars (GB) (Bluebird) and the G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen winner Peace At Last (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Fallen For You's 2-year-old filly Fight For You (Ire) is by Saxon Warrior (Jpn) while she also has a yearling colt by Lope De Vega (Ire).
