Conditions To Suit For Local Dynasty In the Dee

Wide-margin winners trended on a rain-softened opening to Chester's May Festival and, with testing conditions set for day two at the Roodeye, it will be as you were turning to Thursday's Listed Boodles Dee S., another G1 Derby trial, and the Tote-sponsored G3 Ormonde S. for the older stayers.

Godolphin's 'TDN Rising Star' Local Dynasty (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will relish the muddy track, according to Charlie Appleby, and returns off a soft-ground breakthrough score in October's Listed Pontefract Castle when last seen.

“He has done well over the winter and we know that he will handle the ground following his wins at Sandown and Pontefract,” the trainer said. “Stepping up in trip looks as though it should suit and this seems a decent starting point for his campaign.”

O'Brien Dynasty To Retain Sovereignty?

Aidan O'Brien has struck for seven of the last 10 editions and relies on Dundalk maiden winner San Antonio (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in his quest for an overall 10th triumph, which would be one shy of Barry Hills' record 11.

“He's in good form and won his maiden nicely in Dundalk,” the trainer commented. “I don't know if he's run in that ground before, so we're not sure about that, but he's in good form.”

Son Donnacha also has representation and sends forth G2 Golden Fleece S. third Alder (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who will line up off a comeback win at Cork last month.

“He's a very nice horse and we've always thought a lot of him,” said the junior O'Brien. “He was always going to make a better 3-year-old and the race is timed nicely for him. It's three weeks from his last run and then about three weeks to the Derby, so it has worked out well and we will learn a bit more about him.”

Possible Delays For Passenger's Return

It's been a long 20 years since the Dee hosted a subsequent Blue Riband hero, Kris Kin (Kris S.) doing the double for Sir Michael Stoute, but the veteran maestro's impressive Wood Ditton winner Passenger (Ulysses {Ire}) is by no means a certain starter in this year's renewal.

“Sir Michael is going to review the ground in the morning and should it be deemed too soft, Passenger may not run,” revealed Niarchos Family's racing manager Alan Cooper. “He's a horse that needs good ground, so it wouldn't make sense for his second start to run the horse on an unsuitable surface.”

Ormonde Duel In Store

Later on the card, the eight-runner G3 tote.co.uk Bet £5 Get £20 Ormonde S. appears to be a straight-up duel between 2022 hero Hamish (GB) (Motivator {GB}) and Ballydoyle's G1 Derby fifth and G2 King Edward VII victor Changingoftheguard (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who annexed last year's G3 Chester Vase at this meeting.

“He carries a penalty and is very well, but could have done with a better draw,” said trainer William Haggas of the former. “He's ready to go, he enjoys a bit of cut in the ground and I believe it is going to be quite soft. He should enjoy it and we will try to take advantage of the [soft] ground while we have it.”

Ryan Moore is hopeful Changingoftheguard, who comes back off a 328-day break, is up to the task on seasonal return.

“He was very impressive in testing ground when winning the Chester Vase here last season and followed up with a good fifth in the Derby,” the rider said. “We never saw him after [the King Edward VII at] Royal Ascot as he picked up an injury, but we are obviously very happy with him now or else we wouldn't be here. Hopefully, he can get a Group 1 on his CV this season. It's a deep and tough race for a Group 3, but this is a good starting point for him.”

Lope De Vega Colt Earns TDN Rising Star in Chantilly Debut

Philippe Allaire's Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Enchanting Skies {Ire}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}) landed  Tuesday's €50,000 Prix du Coq Chantant at Chantilly, the latest in France Galop's series of premium races for unraced 2-year-olds, earning in the process a 'TDN Rising Star' badge after posting an impressive 5 1/2-length triumph in the five-furlong dash.

Beauvatier broke from the outside stall and raced in rear while working his way across to the stands' side rail. Making smooth headway from halfway, the 23-10 second favourite cruised to the front on the bridle approaching the furlong marker and quickened again when changing leads inside the final 100 metres, surging clear in eyecatching fashion to mark his debut with a daylight success from Kumite (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

“He had not worked a lot before that, but he showed speed and a good attitude in his only serious piece of work so I decided to supplement him for this,” explained trainer Yann Barberot. “Obviously, he has the ability to handle testing ground and we will see how much he improves before deciding on his next race. He has the pedigree to stay further so there is no hurry.”

The February-foaled dark bay becomes the 12th Rising Star for his sire, whose list includes GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and GI Just A Game heroine Newspaperofrecord (Ire), National Stud resident Lope Y Fernandez (Ire), who placed five times at the highest level, and another GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf victrix in Aunt Pearl (Ire).

Allaire's wife Gitte spoke to TDN Europe on Tuesday, where she revealed that Christophe Soumillon called the couple after the race to compliment them on their bright prospect.

She said, “We are very excited about him. We bought him at the Arqana August Sale with Yann Barberot and he looked to be a very nice prospect. Yann picks out several horses for us at the sales to look at and we are happy to have found this one with him. 

“Of course, it is always very exciting to start a young horse after you invest and it's already been a nice return on investment for him after winning a race like that on debut.”

Allaire added, “He has a good pedigree and there was a lot to like about him at the sales. He has good conformation, is a great walker and was very powerful even as a yearling. Lope De Vega is an elite stallion and is very sought after. 

“It is the first time that Christophe Soumillon has called us after the race. He was so happy. I think that is a good sign. We have a saying in France that we are floating on a small cloud. We are enjoying the dream with this horse. It's so nice to dream.”

Beauvatier, a €160,000 Arqana August purchase and kin to a yearling filly by Siyouni {Fr}), is the first of two foals produced by Listed Prix de Thiberville runner-up Enchanting Skies (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), herself a sale-topping €500,000 Baden-Baden September yearling when sold by Ronald Rauscher to Peter and Ross Doyle, on behalf of Mayfair Speculators, in 2016. His dam is one of four black-type performers out of Listed Kolner Fruhjahrs-Stuten-Preis third Estefania (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), the quartet headed by G1 Preis von Europa victor Empoli (Ger) (Halling). Estefania is out of a multiple-winning half to MG1SW G2 German 1000 Guineas and G2 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Elle Danzig (Ger) (Roi Danzig).

Mawj Wins The Battle Of The Rising Stars In The 1000

Frankie's farewell 2000 Guineas was followed 24 hours later by Oisin Murphy and Saeed bin Suroor's comeback 1000 Guineas victory as Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}–Modern Ideals {GB}, by New Approach {Ire}) prevailed in a thrilling TDN Rising Star tussle with Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the QIPCO-sponsored Newmarket Classic. In front of the group racing up the centre from the outset, Godolphin's half-sister to last year's G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was joined by The Aga Khan's 6-4 favourite heading into the dip as they began to pull clear of the far-side leader Matilda Picotte (Ire) (Sioux Nation). Despite minor interference between the first two, there were no excuses as the battle-hardened Mawj held her Irish rival all the way to the line to prevail by half a length at 9-1, with 7 1/2 lengths back to Matilda Picotte in third.

“I had a really good start back thanks to lots of different trainers supporting me,” Murphy said. “Just to get back in the big races with a crowd here, it's a great feeling. All the group one winners mean a lot, but I just realise as I've got older that these top-class horses are super hard to find.”

For bin Suroor, it was a first British Classic success since 2009 and a first in this race in 21 years. “I think this my 195th group one winner around the world and it means a lot, as it has been a long time since we won a Classic race in England,” he reflected of his 13th such winner. “Recently, things have been slow with the quality of horses but luckily when I saw this filly start to work, despite her being tiny, she showed her class. She has a big heart and I thought she was going to win when they were close. The Irish 1000 Guineas could be next, we'll see how she is and talk to Sheikh Mohammed.”

Earning her TDN Rising Star tag on her impressive winning debut here last May, Mawj stayed at six furlongs thereafter and followed a second to Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) in Royal Ascot's G3 Albany S. with a battling defeat of Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) in the G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. at the July Festival. Fourth in the G2 Lowther S. at York in August and third behind Lezoo and Meditate in the G1 Cheveley Park S. back at this venue the following month, she had enjoyed an old-school Dubai preparation for this having defeated the much-vaunted Appleby runner Dream Of Love (Ire) (Shamardal) in the seven-furlong Jumeirah Fillies Classic and taken the Jumeirah Fillies Guineas by 8 1/2 lengths on her first attempt at this trip.

As the ground had worsened considerably from Friday to Saturday, Murphy had begun to worry that Mawj was a sitting duck for the proven slow-ground performer Tahiyra and as they came together passing the two-furlong pole that looked to be the case. Chris Hayes had looked full of horse there, but as soon as the Godolphin filly felt her threat she did what she had to Lezoo last summer and at the line was pulling away in one of the most pulsating 1000 Guineas duels of recent times.

Dermot Weld, who was so close to landing his first 1000 Guineas, surprisingly suggested that the rain had compromised the G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine on her return. “She ran a big race, probably the ground was a shade slow for her,” he said. “We know she has a lot of pace, a lot of speed. The ground just takes the real speed off her. She's run, she's quickened, and Chris Hayes has probably told you that there is another gear there we didn't just quite get today.”

“Because of the weather and things we had, I had to be careful of my training of her,” Weld added. “I would have liked to have got a prep race before today. The ideal plan was to give her a run in Classic trial a couple of weeks ago. The ground has been very heavy and I didn't want to pull the guts out of her. So we came into the race slightly undercooked. We had her 95 per-cent and we didn't have her 100 per-cent and we have got beaten half a length. We'll see how she comes out of the race and I have another Aga Khan filly called Tarawa that ran a very nice prep for the Irish Guineas at Leopardstown today. She is a very sweet filly and she was always on my mind for that, but let's see.”

Kieran Cotter is set to revert to sprinting with Matilda Picotte, who was clear of the field for much of the race. “It was brilliant–she got some cheer in the stands, I can tell you. There are about 20 or 30 of us here. We said coming here that third was up for grabs and we knew we had a serious chance of third. We knew she'd be running on fresh air late on, but she is a marvellous filly. The track is tailor-made for her, because she has so much pace and she can trap down, cruise down into the dip for the climb home. I doubt she will run over the mile again. We'll go back down to six for the Commonwealth Cup.”

Mawj, who becomes the 18th top-level winner for her sire, was continuing the success story of her dam whose aforementioned Modern Games also captured the GI Breeders' Cup Mile as well as the ParisLongchamp Classic. Also responsible for the Listed Windsor S. winner Modern News (GB) (Shamardal), she is a daughter of Gerald Leigh's Epitome (Ire) (Nashwan), linking the late owner-breeder with both Guineas winners over the weekend.

Epitome provided Godolphin with their G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-winning sire Ultra (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}), while she also produced the G3 Prix Minerve scorer Synopsis (Ire) (In The Wings {GB}), while the third dam, the Italian champion Proskona (Mr. Prospector), is the ancestress of Leigh's G1 Prix Lupin and G1 Criterium International-winning sire Act One (GB) (In The Wings {GB}) connected to Riverman's stellar producer Korveya who threw the top Woodman celebrities Bosra Sham and Hector Protector. Modern Ideals' 2-year-old filly is by Mastercraftsman (Ire).

Creative Cause Colt Garners ‘TDN Rising Star’-dom in Post-Derby Allowance

Bo Cruz (Creative Cause), away since a 12 1/4-length maiden romp on the stretch out at Fair Grounds Mar. 4, stamped himself as one to watch on the sophomore scene going forward–and a 'TDN Rising Star'–as he easily handled a strong-looking group of runners in the race following the GI Kentucky Derby.

The grey was second on debut sprinting in NOLA Feb. 5, but put it all together next out, earning a 91 Beyer Speed Figure for his graduation score. With clocker and agent Bruno DeJulio listed as sole owner for the colt's prior starts, Bo Cruz resurfaced here with Skyscraper Racing, Brian Pagano and Patrick Grippo added to the owner line.

Off at 7-2 as big-figure Keeneland debut winner Equivoque (Good Magic) took the most tote attention, Bo Cruz immediately seized command and cleared off by several lengths, posting splits of :24.11 and :47.96. Equivoque ranged up outside of another pursuer to try and make a race of it heading for home, but Bo Cruz had other ideas, slamming the door shut in midstretch and quickly widening his advantage to score by an auspicious three lengths in 1:43.07. Classic Legacy (Into Mischief), the half-brother to Art Collector (Bernardini) who was third last time in the GIII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby, completed the trifecta.

The winner's dam is a half-sister to 2017 GI Preakness S. winner Cloud Computing (Maclean's Music). His third dam is GISW Halo America (Waquoit). Quick Breeze fetched just $7,500 while in foal to Great Notion at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale. She died after producing a colt that May.
