‘Rising Star’ Prince Of Monaco Game In Futurity Victory

If the last 24 hours have given us anything to judge by, the future of racing on the West Coast seems to be in safe hands.

Just one day after 'TDN Rising Star' Tamara (Bolt d'Oro) asserted herself atop her division in the GI FanDuel Racing Del Mar Debutante S., fellow 'Rising Star' Prince of Monaco (Speightstown) followed suit with a game performance to give trainer Bob Baffert his 17th win in the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity.

The colt's victory Sunday came as absolutely no surprise. An eight-length debut winner at Los Alamitos, the $950,000 Fasig-Tipton New York Saratoga Select grad parlayed that right into an equally impressive route when defeating another 'Rising Star' in Muth (Good Magic) to take the GIII Best Pal S. Aug. 13.

“He broke well and I thought I was going to go to the lead,” said winning jockey Flavien Prat. “But other horses went for it, so we waited. On the turn, he made his move and we made the lead. His teammate (Mirahmadi) was trying hard. But I think my horse was just waiting for something to come up to him. That didn't happen. Can he run on? We won't know until it happens, but he's done everything right so far.”

“It was the right kind of trip we were looking for,” added Jimmy Barnes, assistant to Bob Baffert. “We weren't sure about Mirahmadi, where he was going to be placed in the race, but he left there running. (Flavien) Prat just got comfortable on the inside and when he needed to get to the outside he did and he accelerated. He's pretty push button, pretty straight forward. I'm very proud of both of them.”

Pedigree Note:

Picked up out of the aforementioned Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Sale, Prince of Monaco is the first winner out of two to race from the dam. Out of unraced Rainier, the Mar. 26 foal is a grandson of MSW Clay's Rocket (American Chance), a half-sister to GI Frizette winner Adieu (El Corredor). His 7-year-old dam is also responsible for a Munnings filly from last year who sells at Keeneland September next week (hip 1026), followed by a Constitution filly this term. She was bred back to Speightstown for a full-sibling next year.

Endlessly Stays Perfect In Juvenile Turf Romp

In a battle of two touted maiden winners, it was ENDLESSLY (Oscar Performance) who got the final say in Sunday's GIII Del Mar Juvenile Turf S.

Lined up opposite 'TDN Rising Star' Boltage (Bolt d'Oro), the 5-2 second choice kept to what he knew after a winning debut over this same distance earlier in the meet July 30. Also facing two of his stablemates in this spot, Endlessly broke with the pack but was quickly outrun passing the wire the first time by. A keen Des Doigts (Hootenanny), chased intently by both Bear River (Flameaway) and Boltage, blitzed into the first turn through an opening quarter in :22.71. Bear River went on with it to take command up the backstretch as Endlessly checked in near the rear of the field. The top three began to come back to them as Boltage made an early move past a :46.61 half mile and Endlessly followed suit to pick up positions outside of horses. Three across the track at the quarter pole, Boltage tried to make a race of it but the Mike McCarthy trainee went right on by, opening up inside the final sixteenth to win going away.

“I had a good trip,” said winning jockey Juan Hernandez, also aboard for the maiden win. “Mike (trainer Mike McCarthy) told me the horse had really been training well. When you hear that, you don't get nervous out there if you get in a little trouble. You know the horse is going to run strong. My horse did that today. I was tracking the favorite (Boltage) and when I got by him I knew I was in good shape.”

“The horse had drawn a little bit outside today and I told Juan (Hernandez) just go ahead and bounce out of there and hopefully not get yourself stuck too far out in the middle of the racetrack around the first turn,” added McCarthy. “The horse was attentive to him and he put himself in a great spot. He looked like he was always traveling comfortably. It did look like Juan took it to him a little early. It just seemed like he couldn't wait any longer and he was able to finish off nicely.”

The third graded-stakes winner for sophomore sire Oscar Performance, Endlessly is out of an unraced Langfuhr mare who is a half-sister to the dam of both GISW Coffee Clique (Medaglia d'Oro), MGSW Admission Office (Point of Entry) and MGSP Royal Fury (Langfuhr). Dream Fuhrever has been a frequent visitor of Oscar Performance as Endlessly has a 3-year-old full-sister and a weanling full-brother with another full-sibling expected in 2024.

Debutante Winner Tamara Eyes Breeders’ Cup

'TDN Rising Star' Tamara (Bolt d'Oro) was resting comfortably in her stall Sunday morning, the day after capturing the GI FanDuel Racing Del Mar Debutante S.

The daughter of Hall of Famer Beholder sat closer to the pace than in her maiden victory. When jockey Mike Smith asked her, Tamara breezed past the pacesetter, opened up by the top of the lane and cruised home much the best.

The comments afterward told it all.

“It gave me chills,” winning trainer Richard Mandella remarked.

“I've been here in California for four years,” jockey Umberto Rispoli said as he came off the track following his seventh-place finish in the race. “I have never seen anything like that.”

“You don't often see the offspring of a great mare run anywhere close to what they did,” jockey Mike Smith told FanDuel. “But she's an exception to the rule.”

They were talking about the daughter of Bolt d'Oro on the backstretch Sunday morning.

“It was outstanding,” trainer Peter Miller remarked. “She looked like her mother.”

Mandella says Tamara came out of the race fine. In regards to a Breeders' Cup prep, he says they would play it by ear.

“There's a chance we might run her in the GI Chandelier S. Oct. 7 at Santa Anita,” Mandella says. “If it looks like she needs to run again, then we'll run her there. If not we'll point her straight to the Breeders' Cup. But so far she looks great.”

Curragh Group 1 Double For Dubawi As Eldar Eldarov Takes The Irish Leger

Connections of Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) can be satisfied that Sunday's G1 Irish St Leger went by without drama, but the glory was with KHK Racing's TDN Rising Star Eldar Eldarov (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}–All At Sea {GB}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}) as he returned to form to provide his sire with a group 1 double on the Curragh's star-studded card. Putting a largely underwhelming summer behind him, having been seventh in the G1 Gold Cup and fourth in the G1 Goodwood Cup, the 16-5 second favourite enjoyed a perfect tow from Yashin (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) until taking over approaching two out.

With the 4-6 favourite Kyprios in pursuit, the Roger Varian-trained G1 St Leger hero had to keep it up but he kept answering David Egan to beat the Ballydoyle star by 3 1/2 lengths, with Dawn Rising (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) 2 3/4 lengths away in third. The field had been cut to four following the withdrawal of Emily Dickinson (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), but what this renewal lost in numbers it made up for in terms of quality with the market confidence in Kyprios notable.

For Egan, the win was especially important given his connection to the area. “I had my first Classic winner last year, but to do it where I grew up at Osborne Lodge, which is at the five-furlong pole, means a lot,” he said. “It's what dreams are made of and for all the team connected with the horse. My first main job was riding out for Willie McCreery, who I saw today, and he was a great man to learn from and gave me a lot of experience and taught me a lot. He has a tendency to miss the break, but the race went so smooth, he was a race-fit horse today and was as tough as nails.”

Eldar Eldarov, who had earned TDN Rising Star status on his debut at Nottingham in October 2021, also won the G2 Queen's Vase last June but with three of his four outings after the St Leger seeing him finish out of the frame there were the beginnings of doubts as to whether he was going the wrong way. Varian was relieved, but unwilling to accept that he had been disappointing this year. “He's run some great races in defeat this year and it's nice to win two Legers,” he said. “He's entered up in France on Arc weekend and there is the two-mile race at Ascot. He seems to be really best at a mile and six furlongs, but there aren't too many of those races around. He deserves to run one more time this year and it's most likely Ascot.”

Aidan O'Brien said of Kyprios, “A lot of people have done a lot of work to get him to here–all of the vets have done incredible work to get him back. We didn't think we would ever see this day, so to have him back and be happy and for Ryan to be happy is something. He's going to come on a lot and Ascot looks lovely for him. He will have a nice bit of time before now and then and will love going round there. It would be great to see him come back to what he was and this was a great comeback run.”
