‘TDN Rising Star’ Julias Dream Back On Del Mar Turf And In Winner’s Circle

3rd-Del Mar, $63,500, Alw (NW1$X)/Opt. Clm ($80,000), 11-10, 2yo, f, 5fT, :57.39, fm, neck.
JULIAS DREAM (f, 2, Flameaway–Cinnamon Girl, by Meadowlake) earned the title 'TDN Rising Star' at first asking Aug. 6 by the seaside oval when she won pillar to post by 5 1/2 lengths for her top five first-crop sire while sprinting over the turf. Switching to the main track in the GI Del Mar Debutante, she was a well-beaten eighth to fellow 'TDN Rising Star' Tamara (Bolt d'Oro). Back on the grass as the 3-5 choice here, the chestnut filly was challenged to the inside by Thermal (Nyquist), who is part-owned by Talla Racing. On even terms until the top of the lane, Julias Dream found another gear, put away her opponent and won by a neck over the surging Cheeky Gal (Maximus Mischief). The winner's dam, a full-sister to GISP Abby Girl (Meadowlake), produced a yearling colt by Air Force Blue, foaled a colt by Brody's Cause Apr. 10 and was bred to Blueblood for next year. Fast Anna Filly Drops The ‘Hammer’ En Route to ‘Rising Star’ Honors

Brookdale Racing and Mark Edwards's Thorpedo Anna (f, 2, Fast Anna–Sataves, by Uncle Mo) proved that her wide-margin debut success in a sales price-restricted Keeneland maiden Oct. 26 was no fluke, backing up that performance with an even bigger one Friday at Churchill en route to 'TDN Rising Star' honors.

Tightening from even money to jump at exactly 2-5, the $40,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling switched off beautifully and settled in a three-wide third behind fractions of :23.22 and :46.74. Slipped a bit of rein at the three-eighths, Thorpedo Anna loomed up under a hold and was held together for the run into the stretch, and when Brian Hernandez, Jr. went for her in earnest in upper stretch, the response was equal parts instantaneous and devastating, as Thorpedo Anna widened through the final eighth of a mile to take it by nine lengths without ever feeling the crop. She covered her final two furlongs in a very strong :23.84 while not fully extended.

A $40,000 purchase by the shrewd Ken McPeek at last year's Fasig-Tipton October Sale, Thorpedo Anna is a maternal great-granddaughter of Aldebaran Light, the dam of GISW Eskendereya (Giant's Causeway) and the Group 1-winning juvenile Balmont (Stravinsky). Sataves is the dam of the yearling colt McAfee (Cloud Computing), a $40,000 purchase out of this year's Keeneland September Sale, and was most recently covered by Known Agenda.

‘Party On!’: Constitution Colt Turns In ‘Rising Star’-Worthy Performance at Churchill

Pin Oak Stud LLC's Parchment Party (Constitution), who overcame a bit of traffic and a tight spot inside at a crucial stage when belying debut odds of 16-1 over this track and distance Sept. 15, doubled up with an equally eye-catching performance in a Thursday allowance at Churchill Downs, becoming a new 'TDN Rising Star' in the process. He is the eighth 'Rising Star' for his WinStar-based stallion.

Drawn widest in a field of 10 and only lightly regarded in the wagering at just north of 11-2, the $450,000 Keeneland September yearling allowed the inside traffic to clear and was guided down towards the inside by James Graham and trailed into the backstretch. Going sweetly with the better part of a dozen lengths to find passing the half-mile marker, Parchment Party caught the eye with an inside rally around the second turn and was produced three wide into the stretch. Behind a wall of horses at the three-sixteenths, the June foal descended on the leading group five off the fence inside the final furlong and did his best work through the wire to take it by a widening 1 1/2 lengths while not appearing completely focused at the finish of what has the feel of a key race.

First World War (War Front), trying the dirt for the first time and exiting a close fourth as the favorite in the grassy GII Bourbon S. at Keeneland last month, pulled fiercely beneath Tyler Gaffalione for the opening half-mile, settled better thereafter and stayed on for second ahead of longshot Lagynos (Kantharos) in third. Catching Freedom (Constitution), the even-money chalk off a visually impressive debut going this track's one-turn mile Oct. 1, was badly blocked for a run with time ticking away and finished a luckless fourth.

Parchment Party, bred on the same cross that produced GI Belmont S. hero and GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Tiz the Law and Grade III winner and 'TDN Rising Star' We the People, is half-brother to Muqtaser (Distorted Humor), MGSP, $303,605; and Darley Japan stallion American Patriot (War Front), GISW, $487,272, and is out of Life Well Lived–a full-sister to MGI/G1SW Well Armed–who was purchased by Bobby Flay in foal to American Pharoah for $1.25 million at the 2017 Keeneland November Sale. Life Well Lived is also kin to GSW Witty (Distorted Humor), the dam of GSW Bombard (War Front) and MGSP Amuse (Medaglia d'Oro); and to Well Lived (Tiznow), whose recently retired daughter Played Hard (Into Mischief) won this year's GI La Troienne S. This is also the family of two-time Japanese Horse of the Year Symboli Kris S (Kris S.).

Life Well Lived, who was RNAd for $775,000 when offered in foal to Curlin at KEENOV in 2019, has a yearling full brother to Parchment Party and was purchased by Machmer Hall for $360,000 at Keeneland November Thursday carrying a full-sibling to Parchment Party.

8th-Churchill Downs, $128,215, Alw (NW1X), Opt. Clm ($100,000), 11-9, 2yo, 1 1/16m, 1:44.34, ft, 1 1/2 lengths.

Mullion, Full To Mandaloun, Makes Triumphant ‘Rising Star’ 3-Year-Old Debut

Juddmonte homebred MULLION (c, 3, Into Mischief-Brooch, by Empire Maker) made a triumphant return to the races Sunday to graduate in 'Rising Star' style at Churchill Downs.

The full-brother to fellow 'Rising Star' and Juddmonte stallion Mandaloun raced just once as a juvenile but was denied the win by the slimmest of margins at Ellis Park last August. Un-raced since that start, Mullion got back on track for trainer Brad Cox with a tour de force over a over-matched Churchill field. Squeezed just slightly at the break, the son of Into Mischief never let early pacesetter Nyquick (Nyquist) get comfortable, pressing that rival through a quarter in :22.98 before taking command under his own power with a wide move around the turn. From there, it was only a matter of who would finish second as Mullion opened up at will to the line, building up a double-digit lead when all was said and done.

Brooch, no slouch herself as a dual group winner in Ireland, hit it out of the park when her second foal, Mandaloun, took wins in the GI TVG.com Haskell S. and came second in the GI Kentucky Derby only to be upgraded to first upon the disqualification of Medina Spirit (Protonico). The dam is a half to SW/MGSP Caponata (Selkirk) and to MGSP Raymonda (Lonhro {Aus}). A fourth generation homebred for Juddmonte, Mullion also traces back to highweight older mare and G1SW Emulous (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and to her daughter, MG1SP Bluestocking (GB) (Camelot {GB}). While Brooch was sadly lost last year, she still has 2-year-old War Front son and a yearling full-brother to both Mandaloun and Mullion to represent her. Mullion is the 41st 'TDN Rising Star' for leading sire Into Mischief.

2nd-Churchill Downs, $117,750, Msw, 11-5, 3yo/up, 1m, 1:34.69, ft, 10 lengths.
