Charlatan Nears Return to Training

TDN Rising Star Charlatan (Speightstown), a Triple Crown candidate earlier in the season before being sidelined by injury, is expected to return to training soon, according to Starlight Racing’s Jack Wolf, who campaigns the sophomore in partnership with SF Racing, Madaket Stables and Stonestreet Stables. After detecting some filling to the front ankle following a June 1 workout [five furlongs in 1:00.80] at Santa Anita, Bob Baffert confirmed that the colt would get 45 days off after an MRI revealed chips which required minor surgery.

“He’s doing really well,” said Wolf. “[The Baffert barn] sent us a video of Charlatan on the backside at Del Mar the other day and he looks fantastic right now. Bob’s comment was ‘Too bad he won’t be running in the [Kentucky] Derby.’ The horse is the real deal, for sure. He hadn’t had a breeze, but the plan is to start him back in a week to 10 days.”

Charlatan won his first two career starts at Santa Anita, including a front-running 10 1/4-length romp Mar. 14. Heavily favored in the second division of the May 2 GI Arkansas Derby, the colt cruised home a six-length winner over Basin (Liam’s Map), but was subsequently demoted to ninth after testing positive for lidocaine, a Class 2 drug, following the race.

Earlier in the season, Baffert had mentioned the GI Preakness  S. was a outside possibility, however, the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic seemed a more realistic late-season goal for the Stonestreet-bred colt.

Wolf added, “I doubt he would be ready for the Preakness, but sometimes these horses can surprise you at how quickly they come back.”

Sister To Wuheida a New Rising Star At Newmarket

Friday’s MansionBet Best Odds Guaranteed Fillies’ Novice S. at Newmarket played host to a new TDN Rising Star as Godolphin’s A’Shaari (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) made a serious impact on debut for the Charlie Appleby stable. Sent off the 3-1 second favourite for the seven-furlong contest, the full-sister to the operation’s GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac winner Wuheida (GB) travelled smoothly on the testing ground held up by William Buick throughout the early stages. Moving smoothly down the outer to gain command approaching the furlong pole, the chestnut burst clear and was being eased late en route to a 3 1/2-length success from Ready To Venture (GB) (Kingman {GB}), with 2 3/4 lengths back to Bellazada (Ire) (Belardo {Ire}) in third.

While wide-margin wins on this type of ground can flatter to deceive, the portents are strong that A’Shaari has real potential with her talented full-sibling also scoring on debut over the same course and distance in the same month four years ago. She went straight from her maiden to Chantilly on Arc day where she prevailed in the Marcel Boussac before adding the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf and G2 Dahlia S. to her tally and placing in the G1 Falmouth S. and G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks), Hwt. Older Mare-Eng at 7-9 1/2f, Hwt. Older Mare-Eur at 7-9 1/2f, G1SW-Fr, GISW-US, GSW & G1SP-Eng, G1SP-Ger, $1,537,519. Appleby said, “A’Shaari has only come to hand in the last few weeks, but handled the ground well as her sister Wuheida did.”

The dam Hibaayeb (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) was also introduced over this track and trip in August 2009 by Clive Brittain and although she took four runs to break her maiden she did so in style in the G1 Fillies’ Mile. Transferred to Godolphin soon after, she was third in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary and won the G2 Ribblesdale S. before recording a career-best success in the GI Yellow Ribbon S. at three before annexing the GII Sheepshead Bay S. as a 4-year-old. A’Shaari is her fourth winner from as many runners and she also has a filly foal by Deep Impact (Jpn) to come.

High Definition a New Rising Star At The Curragh

Aidan O’Brien had a duo engaged in Saturday’s Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden over a mile at The Curragh and enjoyed a one-two as the middle-distance types begin to emerge from the stable’s crop of juveniles. While the market favoured Wordsworth (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the full-brother to the G1 St Leger and G1 Grand Prix de Paris hero Kew Gardens (Ire) ultimately had to give best to the stable’s second-string High Definition (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who swooped late to score with authority at 7-1. Held up in rear early by Wayne Lordan, the son of the listed scorer and group 3-placed Palace (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) was looking for room two out still anchored at the back. Delivered with a surge to cut through the pack and make up three lengths on that 5-2 favourite, he was going away at the line where he held a 3/4-of-a-length margin over his stablemate, with Flying Visit (Ire) (Pride of Dubai {Aus}) a head away in third.

The winner is a full-brother to last year’s G2 Beresford S. winner and G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy runner-up Innisfree (Ire), GSW-Ire, G1SP-Eng, $141,701, who has yet to be seen this term but was front rank in the Derby picture during the winter. Lordan was impressed with the bay, who is a late-May foal. “He was a little raw early. Through the middle of the race they didn’t quicken away from me and I was getting into a nice rhythm,” he commented. “He finished out comfortably. He’s a lovely colt and he’s going to be a lovely horse next year going a trip.”

Palace was always held in high regard at Ballydoyle and that was evidenced in that fact that she was only 6-1 for the 2014 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas following her second in the G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial. Fifth in that Classic before being picked by Ryan Moore in the G1 Epsom Oaks where she was seventh, she went on to gain a vital black-type success in the Listed Cairn Rouge S. over an extended mile having run second in the 10-furlong Listed Naas Oaks Trial. She is a half-sister to this stable’s Furner’s Green (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}), who took the G3 Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial and was a close third in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains, as well as the listed-winning G1 Irish Oaks third Lady Lupus (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), the listed-winning and G3 Solonaway S. third Mystical Lady (Ire) (Halling) and the Lincoln H. winner Bravery (Ire) by Innisfree’s sire Galileo. Mystical Lady is the dam of three black-type performers for Ballydoyle including the Listed Dee S. winner and G1 Irish Derby and G1 Ascot Gold Cup runner-up Kingfisher (Ire) also by Galileo. The third dam is the high-class Sonic Lady (Nureyev), heroine of the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, G1 Sussex S. and G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp.

Futurity Is the Key at The Curragh

While York’s Ebor Festival wraps up with its £250,000 feature handicap on Saturday, The Curragh stages the G2 Galileo Irish EBF Futurity S. and G2 A.R.M. Holding Debutante S. for the budding Classic contenders of 2021. Twelve months ago, Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was finishing fifth to Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) in the Debutante which underlines what these vital staging posts can play host to. While Aidan O’Brien was unable to extend his record tally of a dozen winners despite having that ammunition, the fillies’ contest has been collected by his former stable luminaries Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), so it is clear that he targets this with his elite. The Ballydoyle 2-year-olds have hardly shone so far this term, but the July 4 G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies’ Sprint S. winner Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) is the pick of Seamie Heffernan as she steps up from six furlongs having finished third in the July 19 G2 Airlie Stud S. here.

Aidan’s other contender Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) was fourth behind Donnacha’s Shale (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Joseph’s TDN Rising Star Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}) in the G3 Silver Flash S. over this seven-furlong trip at Leopardstown Aug. 6 and that form could be key. One notable withdrawal from the Silver Flash was Jim Bolger’s 11-length July 28 Galway maiden scorer Meala (Ire) (Epaulette {Aus) and she will pose fierce opposition to the O’Briens if in the same heart.

One domestic pattern race that Aidan does not hold the record in is the Futurity, where the late great Dr Vincent O’Brien still holds sway with his 16 renewals. Just three behind at this stage, the current master of Ballydoyle has won six of the last seven and the last four and it is significant that Heffernan sticks with the maiden Van Gogh (American Pharoah) who was a neck second to the stable’s Military Style (War Front) in Leopardstown’s G3 Tyros S. over this seven-furlong trip Aug. 6. Whether Van Gogh is another Giant’s Causeway, Hawk Wing, Gleneagles (Ire) or Churchill (Ire) remains to be seen, but as a son of the Triple Crown hero and the operation’s 2001 G1 Epsom Oaks and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Imagine (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) he is a truly special commodity.

Missing from the Tyros as Leopardstown’s ground firmed up was Alpha Racing 2020’s Cadillac (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who had impressed when winning by nine lengths on debut over that course and distance July 1. This easy surface will suit ideally and Jessie Harrington could be celebrating another major win with a son of the sire after the G1 Phoenix S. success of Lucky Vega (Ire) earlier this month. “He’s in great form, he’s doing very well,” Harrington said. “The only reason I didn’t run him at Leopardstown was because the ground was very quick that day. I took him out then, but he has been in great form since and we’re hoping for a big run from him.”

Other important 2-year-old action takes place at Deauville, with the G2 Shadwell Prix du Calvados featuring two significant overseas raiders in the July 21 Listed Star S. winner Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) and the O’Callaghans’ impressive July 7 Roscommon maiden scorer No Speak Alexander (Ire) (Shalaa {Ire}) with the stranded Frankie booked for the ride on the latter. He also partners the July 5 G2 Oaks d’Italia heroine Auyantepui (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) in the G2 Shadwell Prix de la Nonette, but she should at best be playing second-fiddle to the sponsors’ five-length June 14 G1 Prix Saint Alary winner Tawkeel (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) in that 10-furlong contest.

At York, the G2 Sky Bet City of York S. sees Lael Stable’s dual G1 Prix de la Foret heroine One Master (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) look to build on her latest success over this seven-furlong trip in the G3 Oak Tree S. at Goodwood July 31. She should be a tough nut to crack with conditions ideal, but Roger Varian could have thrown a spanner in the works by dropping San Donato (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) back in trip following his eyecatching effort when sixth in the G1 Sussex S. also at Goodwood July 29.
