Another Ascot Rising Star As Kingman’s Love Is You Excites

TDN Rising Stars kept coming at Ascot on Saturday, with Normandie Stud’s newcomer Love Is You (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) swooping to take the well-contested Moet & Chandon British EBF Fillies’ Novice S. over a mile at the Berkshire venue. A daughter of Fallen For You (GB) (Dansili {GB}), who had her finest hour over this course and distance when winning the 2012 G1 Coronation S., the homebred half-sister to last year’s G2 Hungerford S. winner Glorious Journey (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was held up early at the back by Jason Watson. Looking set for minor honours only as the 6-5 market-leader Monsoon Moon (GB) (Kingman {GB}) loomed with menace on the home turn, the 3-1 second favourite instead delivered a flourish as that half-sister to last year’s G1 St Leger hero Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}) began to fade in the closing stages. It was Godolphin’s prior winner Last Sunset (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) who looked to have edged it, but Love Is You was flying out wide and grabbed her in the final strides for a neck success, with Monsoon Moon eventually 1 1/4 lengths behind in third.

“She will have learnt plenty from that,” trainer Roger Charlton said of the G1 Fillies’ Mile entry. “She was very relaxed early on and I was concerned the game was up when the favourite cruised up, but she picked up well and her last furlong was her best. I think it was quite a decent field and the favourite will also improve a lot, as she looked to get tired. They are nice fillies and she won going away. I entered her in her group 1 three days ago, as she’s been pleasing us.”

Aside from winning the Coronation, Fallen For You was also second in the G2 May Hill S. as a juvenile and her second foal Glorious Journey was purchased for 2.6million gns at the 2016 Tattersalls October Sale Book 1. He went on to win the G2 Al Fahidi Fort, G3 Prix Daphnis and G3 Prix la Rochette as well as the aforementioned Hungerford, GSW-UAE, GSW-Eng, MGSW-Fr, $473,188. The second dam Fallen Star (GB) (Brief Truce) captured the Listed Silver Trophy and was runner-up in the G3 Premio Sergio Cumani before also producing the Listed Heron S. winner Fallen Idol (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). Also the ancestress of the G3 Prix de Flore winner Loving Things (GB) by Pivotal, she is kin to the G1 Lockinge S. hero Fly To the Stars (GB) (Bluebird) and National Day (Ire) (Barathea {Ire}) who produced the G2 German 2000 Guineas scorer Peace At Last (Ire) (Oasis Dream {Ire}). Also connected to the G1 Levin Classic hero Age of Fire (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), Fallen For You’s unraced 3-year-old colt Turquoise Kingdom (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was sold for 500,000gns at the Book 1 Sale, while she also has a foal full-sister to Love Is You to come.

Wootton Bassett’s Akmaam a New Rising Star On Debut

Ascot’s two-day meeting continued to supply 2-year-olds with abundant promise on Saturday, with the Stella Artois British EBF Novice S. playing host to a new TDN Rising Star as Shadwell’s Akmaam (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) stamped his class on the seven-furlong contest. Always travelling easily on the front end under Martin Dwyer, the 12-1 shot opened up passing two out and galloped out strongly to the line for a four-length success from Siam Fox (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}), with Arqoob (Ire) (Estidhkaar {Ire}) another half-length away in third. “He’s a lovely colt and has always shown us he is,” trainer Brian Meehan said. “He is very much a 3-year-old in the making and could have one more run this year, but I’ll speak to the owner and the racing team. He was in the stalls for four to six minutes after the scheduled time and that was unfortunate. He did a barrier trial at Lingfield and was really good today.” Martin Dwyer added, “He was impressive and is a lovely big, kind horse who six to eight weeks ago was working like a champion and then went through a weak spot, so Brian left him alone for a bit. He sent him for that barrier trial a week ago and he’s really come good. He showed there today what he had shown us at home.”

Akmaam is the last known foal and the third winner from three runners out of the unraced Misty Night (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), whose dam Misty Heights (GB) (Fasliyev) captured the Listed Victor McCalmont S. and was runner-up in the G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial and G3 C. L. Weld Park S. She also produced the G1 Paddock S. winner Inara (SAf) (Trippi) and the GIII Dance Smartly H. winner Madeira Mist (Ire) (Grand Lodge), with the latter in turn responsible for the triple GI Canadian International-winning sire Joshua Tree (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and Ballydoyle’s smart 3-year-old colt Arthur’s Kingdom (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) who was second in the G1 Criterium de Saint Cloud and the G2 King Edward VII S. The fourth dam is Magic of Life (Seattle Slew), winner of the G1 Coronation S. and responsible for the G2 Lowther S. and G3 Princess Margaret S. winner and stakes producer Enthused (Seeking the Gold).

Newspaperofrecord a Headliner on Derby Undercard

‘TDN Rising Star’ Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) returns to the site of her biggest career victory in Saturday’s GII Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile S.

The 2018 GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine beneath the Twin Spires has begun to make up for a winless season at three for trainer Chad Brown with a pair of jaw-dropping wins at Belmont this June-the GIII Intercontinental S. and the GI Just a Game S.

The 4-5 morning-line favorite will be piloted for the first time by Javier Castellano.

Brad Cox will saddle the co-second choices, Beau Recall (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) and Juliet Foxtrot (GB) (Dansili {GB}).

Beau Recall, a last-to-first upset winner of this race last year, completed the exacta behind Newspaperofrecord in the Just a Game. She enters off a fifth-place finish as the favorite while attempting to defend her title in the GII Yellow Ribbon H. at Del Mar Aug. 8.

Juliet Foxtrot has lost five in a row since capturing last summer’s GIII Modesty H. at Arlington while placing in a trio of Grade I events. She was third last time in Keeneland’s GI Coolmore Jenny Wiley S. July 11.

Lope de Vega’s La Barrosa a New Rising Star

Ascot’s seven-furlong Me2 Club EBF Future Stayers’ Maiden S. on Friday looked one for future Classic prospects on paper and it was the 2-1 favourite La Barrosa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) who came out on top to earn TDN Rising Star status. Having cost 750,000gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, Godolphin’s son of the multiple group-placed Bikini Babe (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) carried a sense of expectation despite the presence of Derab (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), the half-brother to Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}). Settled in mid-pack early by James Doyle as the pace proved only tepid, the bay was launched between rivals passing the two-furlong pole and was soon in front with first run on Juddmonte’s keenly-anticipated fellow newcomer. Surging to the line with that rival in tow, he had 1 1/4 lengths to spare there as they pulled 2 3/4 lengths clear of the strongly-supported King Power-Roger Varian runner Greatgadian (Ger) (Siyouni {Fr}) in third.

Doyle was impressed. “I had sat on him at home and he had worked nicely and pleased us, so we expected him to run well and his price reflected that,” he said. “He didn’t jump that quick and so I immediately found cover, which was the key to him as he was a bit bull-headed with me going down. Cover helped him relax and once I got a bit of a gap he quickened up really well. He can only keep stepping forward, as he can be a little bit wooden–he’s that way at home and can take me on nice so it was nice that he learned how to do it the right way round. When the gap came, he was in front a furlong and a half out which is a long way on a newcomer at Ascot. The second horse looked quite nice in the paddock and he’s shown a good turn of foot and won well. I’m sure a mile will not be a problem, as the dam operated in group races over a mile and a quarter and he’s got a good stride. He’s a big robust type and I’m sure we could see him a couple of times before the season is out. There might be options for him in France, where he could learn a bit more but Charlie will work it out, he does a great job of that.”

The aforementioned Bikini Babe was campaigned by Mark Johnston from seven to 12 1/2 furlongs, with her finest efforts being second placings in the 9 1/2-furlong Listed UAE Oaks on Tapeta and behind Zagora (Fr) (Green Tune) in the 10-furlong G3 Prix de Psyche. Also runner-up in the G3 C.L. Weld Park S. and third in the G3 Sandown Classic Trial, she is a daughter of Zeiting (Ire) (Zieten) who was successful in stakes races in France and the States. Bikini Babe is one of six black-type performers she produced, with the trio of Combat Zone (Ire) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}), Scottish (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Royal Empire (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) winning at group level.

Another of Zeiting’s daughters, the G3 Prix Miesque third Zut Alors (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), went on to throw four black-type runners of her own headed by the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and GIII Honey Fox S. winner Precieuse (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) and the smart listed-placed and Wokingham H.-winning sprinter Baccarat (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}) who raced for this stable. Zeiting is a half to the speedy and precocious G3 Prix du Bois scorer Dolled Up (Ire) (Whipper) and to Madany (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who has made her name as the dam of the G2 Hungerford S. winner and G1 2000 Guineas S. runner-up Massaat (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), the G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Eqtidaar (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and last week’s impressive Newmarket winner Mujbar (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}). The dam’s yearling is a filly by Tamayuz (GB) named Once (Ire).
